I can't remember my marathon time to the exact second but I do know it to the nearest minute 4hr 48.
After 20 years I might forget the exact time but not by that much.
The thing that I really found annoying though was the quote from the editor of Running Fitness.
"Who wants to say they ran four hours? It's an OK time but not a runner's time."
So according to Mr Castle, I and a lot of others that complete marathons in 4 hours plus aren't runners. I wonder what he thinks we are?
Oh and to answer the question, I wouldn't fib about my time as I'm proud that I finished in the time I did.

I would never lie. Incredibly proud of my 1:59:19.
Ditto. I trained really hard for my 1:59:18.
I used to exagerate my time a bit as my club colleagues were faster and I was sort of ashamed of mine as I did the same, if not more training - but looking back 2:41 was a good time even though my club mates were to a man 10 minutes or more faster - I am just proud that I was able to run and complete a marathon, whatever their time anyone else can be proud too. That is what is great about running - 26 miles is 26 miles however fast or slow (btw my PB is from 1989!!!)
Wetter is better and Muttley LOL!!!!!
A brilliant dip for the line Muttley.
I can think of a few people who will pop along any second now to tell you to run a Parkrun on Saturday to prove it
What's the point in fibbing about a PB time? You're only cheating yourself.
joggers?
he's obviously a natural politician when it came so easily to him.
Now we know how he plans to fix their budget deficit while increasing spending !
Didn't like the 4 hours comment either. I'd be estatic to be anywhere near that.
My PB in my one and only marathon so far was 5:04:08. I never lie about this, but if talking to other runners it is often accompanied by me saying it's 'a bit rubbish' even though I'm just happy to have completed one. I'd like to think I could do a lot better when I one day try it again.
I know my marathon pb to the second - can't say the same for other distances though where it's more to the minute - too many to remember with 5K, 10K, 5 mile, 10 mile, half marathon.
My marathon PB is 4:38. I can justify this to the fast guys by reminding them I had a long swim and bike as a warm up.
Not fussed about a fast mara. I prefer the shorter stuff.
Matthew Parris has a PB of 2:32:57 !
and kevin keegan apparently ran the inaugural Great North Run in 1.26
My PB is so slow that most of you guys would have showered and fed before I get near the finish.
But I remember what it is to the second.....
You almost write that as if you're surprised how good it was.
Don't forget he was a professional athlete, at the peak of his fitness (30) at the time. Training in those days also involved a lot more long running, then the high intensity short distance work of today. I'd have expected quicker if anything.
Ridiculous quote from Mr Castle. bearing in mind he's writing for a mag called Running Fitness, which is probably a beginner fuelled magazine.
For one thing, 4hours for a bloke 20-40 is a completely different story than for a woman 50-60. You can't say the time itself isn't a runner's time full stop.
Ryan is a politician. You can tell when they are lying; their lips move.
(4:47. Well, it's 4:46 something, but I can't remember the something, so I just round it up. Perhaps I should round it down?)
fair point, Stevie G. but bear in mind that Kevin K was also carrying the weight of that perm
True. And in fairness, clearly running 13.1miles at pace isn't something they'd be specially trained for.
And he made a heck of a better job at trying our game, then we would at trying his game!
I wouldnt lie!! Oh I got 2:37:05 at the liverpool marathon this coming October
it's tricky when the younger women at my club raise the question of times....
Would've been 1:46 if Sir Alex had been half a mile from the finish and mentioned anything about pressure...
The famous Ron Hill has in the past mentioned that you can't be called a runner unless you can run a marathon in under 3 hours
Would Bolt call himself a runner or a sprinter, is there a difference? or is that a new thread? when does a sprinter become a runner? so many questions
