I have a very large open blister on the bottom of my foot caused by excessive running. Im running a half marathon on sunday so im desperate for it to heal asap ! Ive read alot of conflicting statements, some say to leave it uncovered and let the air get to it, and some say it should be covered. One nurse told me that a compeed patch creates a warm moist environment and this is good for healing ?? through the day im wearing a compeed patch which allows me to walk on it with less pain, and obviously creates a sterile area around the wound, but should i remove it when i get home and allow it to dry ??
Comments
Compeeds stick really firmly, you are supposed to leave them in place until the blister has healed.
I would have thought pulling it off would cause more damage to the the tender skin.
Leave the compeed on, it heals underneath the patch.
Thanks !! What about time frame ?? Im gonna post a picture so you can see how bad it is.
I had something similar. 3/4 days I think but it was some time ago.
The patch fell off in the shower and there was new skin underneath.
I think the compeed acts similar to what a scab does. So no need to let it dry as the compeed is doing the work of the scab. A scab provides protction to allow healing to take place underneath it, the scab is not the new skin.
What bos1 said.
You should be able to leave that on for up to a week.
You'll notice the area where it's in contact with open skin turning a yellow/white colour. Lots of people think this is pus - it's not, it's just how the dressing reacts on the moist wound. If the white area reaches the edge of the dressing before a week is up, then change the dressing.
However, if it becomes (more) painful, red/inflamed, swollen, then you need to get the dressing off and see your doctor.
I didn't need to see that before lunch thanks! Or at all, really.
I think you're likely to find running the half on Sunday rather painful.
Oh, and by the way - OUCH!
Don't Compeed that. Hot water (as hot as you can tolerate) with a couple of teaspoons of salt. Put your foot in it for about 10 minutes.
....................naughty
Trust me, I'm a nurse
Thats exactly what is happening Nurse Ratched, the temptation is there to take it off and have a look underneath but ill resist !! its alot less painful today which is an encouraging sign, i just hope it improves for sunday !! Is there aything else i can do for race day to make it more comfortable ??
But not just 'a nurse'.
Nurse Ratched was the cruel control freak in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" with a penchant for EST ...
She's my professional role model
jb - I don't think there's much else you can do. Trying to pad it up will just shift pressure to another part of your foot and give you another blister.
Time to HTFU
I've used Compeed and it is good stuff, it works. But listen to what matron says.
If it's still pretty raw a fresh compeed on race day will help, otherwise I'd say there is not much you can do.
Meh. I had similar one on Thursday, ran a PB on Saturday and a 19 mile training run on the Sunday..... man up
Thanks for all the advise, and ill man up and run through th pain lol im sure it'll be fine !
Have you been stalking me?
Heh, I'm a fan of the film too. It's not an easy one to forget, and nor is your hero
Gotta love those icy eyes.
jb - has your foot gone black and dropped off yet?
Don't put any patches on. Delays healing. Keep the area clean and moisturised and it should heal up in about 5 days. After 7 days you can file away all the old skin (if any) and you're ready to go. Only danger if keeping the blister open is infection.
Compeed will do the job nicely. Just leave the patch on till you eventually find something plasticy and nasty lurking around in your bedsheets!
I used the Dr Scholl ones and they worked very well, you actually forget its there and as Paul J-R said you will find it under the bedsheets. I could run with my blister no problem wearing it
Compeed and other dressings of that type don't delay healing, they assist it.
SO............jb................how did the race go?
Well the compeeds worked a treat, didnt have much problem at all ! The race went pretty well, i set of too fast and my legs were cramping horrendously by mile 9, the last few miles were a killer ! Finished in 2 hours 13 mins which im pretty happy with !! I hope to smash it next year !!
Nice one JB, well toughed out
I have a blister exactly the same as your photo after doing a 10.4 mile run last night. Have put a compeed onit and hopeing it will be ok in time for my half marathon in 13 days time. Am obviously going to stop training as i can hardly walk onit. If im ok will also be popping down the local running shop to get some proper socks.
