Sorry just needing a rant as yes those comments have already started and I guess its going to be more common nearer to the event.
I got my VLM rejection mag ...not bitter and not surprised and was very much expecting this to be the case, that I had already signed up to do Brighton.
However now that I am informing people that I am doing the Brighton marathon I have had the classic....how far is the Brighton marathon then?!!!!! AAAAAARRRRGH! To be fair some of them have no idea how far a marathon is anyway but alot seriously think its a different distance to London. I can see some of my friends getting shouted at soon!
Comments
why are you informing people who obviously aren't that interested?
I'm not sure I'd value a friendship that much where innocent ignorance of one's hobby = "obviously not that interested". i.e. bit of a wild assumption on your part.
Isnt the Brighton marathon shorter than London as you will be going downhill more ???
Is it a "real" one?
(best comment ever from a colleague). I normally get asked what i've done at the weekend and when replying: a marathon - they reply: a real one.
'Marathon' is also used to mean anything which takes a long time, and/or is of great duration.
A marathon drinking session, a marathon shopping trip.
It's not that surprising that people who don't run don't know that it has a specific meaning.
And then there's the Comrades Marathon (56 miles), the Marathon de Sables (several days of marathons)....
Fair point....There is still the issue of poeple thinking that London is the only marathon though - and yes the charity question too? No I am running for fun!...yes seriously!
I tend not to talk about my running to my non running mates - thats why I come on here! Its just when they ask questions I will chat about it.
Not running related but I used to get just a pissed off with .. are you trying for a girl? when I was pregnant with my 3rd baby...and the pitying looks when they found out it was another boy!!
gemgemx...................I hated it when people did that when i was pregnant as well
How do you try for a girl? Eat mainly pink things?
(Sorry, biology was never my strong point.)
I know this.....wanted a girl, so thought I should do some research
Wooden spoon under mattress
Pink ribbon under pillow
sleep on left side (or was it right)
Certain positions......can't remember that either
and the more scrientific.....female spermies have more endurance, can last longer...so timeing is everything!
The things you can google.....
philpub.they are always implying that you are only having another child as you are trying for a girl......as it everyone wants oine of each and when you have 2 boys.the only reason to get pregnant is to have a girl......
To me when you are pregnant.........your wish should be for a healthy baby, not one of one sex or another............if you really have a preference.then you are already putting more pressure on the child as you are expecting certain things from them before they are even born......
Wooden spoon. Gotcha! I'll pass these tips on to my sisters-in-law. So far in my generation we've knocked out five boys and no girls. Rubbish!
Eating bananas was how to get boys. Apparently.
And then there's the comment about being very pregnant. You either are or you aren't pregnant. It's an absolute.
What were we talking about?
This video sums up your point gemgem -it's classic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oo6Pm0juNvY&feature=related
