I'm looking for a drink that has balanced electrolytes in it (sodium, potassium and others), to drink before a long endurance event. Anyone any recommendations? It doesn't have to contain any sugars.
see also previous poster who recommends high5. i don't use their stuff but their website is VERY good recommending various drinks for various events (all their drinks of coursE)
Elete is really good - it's just a concentrated salt solution, no sweeteners, no flavourings, no nasty taste in the back of your mouth afterwards. Usually use 2.5 mL per litre water but you can make it up stronger if you want. You can carry the handy 25 mL bottle with you in case you need an extra shot of salts on the way round. I recoment the "starter pack" of the 25 ML bottle plus one of the larger refill bottles, but if you're not sure, just go for the little bottle first.
Why do you need an electrolyte drink? Why not try a few long runs without taking any additional electrolyte drinks, salt tablets or any other commercially promoted product?.... just drink a little water when you feel thirsty.
Our bodies are biologically designed for endurance running, as long as you're eating a healthy diet they have eveything they need to regulate themselves during long-term exercise. There is no scientific evidence that suggests otherwise.
Water and dates, that's all I use. Nature knows best.
i sweat buckets year round despite being very fit always have done , if i dont take on some sort of electrolytes before and after a hard session , i get stuck down with savage headaches
if you lose over 2-3% of your body weight in sweat then your performance deteriorates a LOT. so as you know that 1kg water = 1 litre water then you can work out how much fluid you need to take on during strenuous exercise. (weigh yourself before and after the sweat-fest!)
for most of us this will not be a factor in anything less than a 90 minute RACE.
you need to replace the stuff you use in exercise so you drink an isotonic drink NOT HYPERTONIC or anything othertonic...isotonic.
lucozade sport type things are great...only problem is they are quite calorific so if you are trying to lose weight as well then beware of that!
but definately reaplce all the water and more that you sweat.

Look at something like Nuun or Zero.
My local megaTesco sells Zero, so worth checking out your local one or equivalent.
or you could take salt tabs which contains them all and just drink your favourite normal drink

dioralyte sachets are good and handy you can just pour sachet into bottle of water ,
