Hi Super Bald Chimp - thanks but a couple of our participants from previous runs provided a profile, which was used in the preview of the Greensand Marathon in the October 2012 issue of Runner's World magazine.
Hi Dr Rob, sorry to keep pestering you with questions, but are there still spaces for Oct, what time do you think it will fill up? Reason I ask is that I'm running London - Brighton (57 miles) on Sunday, and want to see if I can still walk before committing to the Greensand.
To everyone else - I ran this a couple of years ago and cannot recommend it enough - brilliant run, and great organisation etc. If I could only do one organised race over and over, this would be it (genuinely).
J Hamstrung - here's a guide for you....my flat 1/2 marathon PB is 1h41, I made the cutoff at Greensand in 58 or 59 mins (can't remember exactly), and finished in 4h43. I suspect I could have been quicker overall if I hadn't been so worried about missing the cutoff (unnecessarily as it turned out) that I pushed my pace a little over the first quarter.
Still plenty of places left. The cut off is designed to ensure that everyone finishes within six hours... It's very doable if you can knock off a flattish marathon within four and a half hours of so.
Thanks for the kind words, Klute. Good luck in the L2B!
I can easily knock out a cross country half and my Leith Hill half time was 1:50, midsummer Munro substantially more, 2:20. I can make the cut-off easy, can I do the distance? I'm looking for encouragement here.. What d'ya reckon?
Snap! Have you done any distnaces longer than a half in training? If you've managed to get up to 20 miles on a few occasions, then I'd say go for it but if you haven't then I'd be tempted to think twice as there's a big difference between a half and a full marathon, especially one as hilly as this one.
Agree with Lorenzo... mind 2.20's good for Munro if you mean this year's extended version. My two off the Picnic were more like 3 excluding the extra miles and time for a wrong turning
Is anyone else travelling down from London and fancy sharing a cab to the start from Dorking? If so get in touch cheers
QB - it was Munro 2011 so the standard distance. But, I had been smoking 20-a-day for the 25 years prior to the race and did little training (not said with any pride). Now I look after myself!
I'm in too, I'm not planning to set the world alight, but make the cut off and get round after that, anything in the 4's will be good. although not done this before and although I haven't trained as much as I should (when do you ever!!) I am really looking forward to an alternative and challenging marathon, the medal, the t shirt and of course the cooked breakfast!
It's the final countdown? Run for the hills (run for your life)?
Snap! - you can even enter on the day (who'd be mad enough to enter a marathon on the day?) Better to enter by the morning of 19 October... to be on my entry lists.
Well, I'm excited. Ran 20 miles along the south downs way last night, took in some of the steyning stinger route. Horizontal hail to greet me. Fingers were numb for hours. Kids think I'm an idiot. Come to think of it, so oes my wife. She's coming along to laugh at me next weekend.
The availability of the swimming pool has been confirmed (2pm-4pm) thanks to Phil Sears for life-guarding. Bring your trunks/swimmers! (Phil will be pleased to give you any swimming/stroke tips - he is a Master!). No muddy shoes in the pool, please... leave them by the door to the pool (the pool is accessed through the car parks).
'2pm-4pm'? - he's going to be an even better swimmer as reckon that he'll have the pool to himself for the first 30 mins or so!
Does sound good - if I can get myself round the course in reasonable time and sort my way home afterwards. Mind if the weather continues as is, my priority will probably be a mug of tea and the breakfast!
Weather is looking dull but dry for tomorrow although there's more rain forecast for overnight. What do people reckon - trail shoes or normal road shoes?
Lorenzo, trail I'd have thought after so much recent rain - but you may get a more considered opinion from a local later. It's good news that staying dry through the run!
Snap - no challenge, just got to get to train and take a fair time so may just head off rather than stopping for a relaxing swim. I'll want to get the evening with my kids having spent the day on myself
Foggy, foggy fog. FOG! It was foggy down there this morning, as I dropped a load of stuff off, and is forecast for fog tomorrow as well, clearing later. Could be a nice day!
Lorenzo, I'll be wearing my trail shoes, especially after all that rain. Re fog: By the time I finish the sun will be shining!!!!!! Please, don't forget to give us runners in the back an encouraging wave, we will need it. Yes, you guessed it - it'll be my first Greensand.........!!

Does anyone have an idea what your approximate flat half marathon speed would have to be to make the cut-off?

I hope you're all looking forward to my singing at the halfway point
Do you take requests?
I'm thinking a bit of Bon Jovi would be very fitting at the half-way point.
brilliant, or Spencer Dvis Group!

By George! I've only gone and done it!
See you on the hills people!

Just over 24 hours to go and counting!

What's the best place for my family to come and see me on the 2nd and 3rd 1/4's?
Needs to be near parking as my 3yr old has little legs.
