Is anyone in possession of a better route map? the one offered has to be the worsed route map ever,,cant see a thing or direction hardly or stations etc..
I'm planning 8-53 miles for the first seventeen.... and that includes the first mile. I'd have done a 9-50 first mile if it was flat... to warm myself up. But I'll use the down hill to warm up without losing that minute.
Wona... Someone put together a better routemap that you can zoom in on.... I think it's the last post on page 25, if memory serves my right.
Brian Porter, the official route measurer, posted a map of the course back in April along with elevation etc, top of page 9, but here's the link again: http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/82866731
I'm letting the start draw me in but I'm not counting on a bank just trying to keep steady (I'm undertrained and am unsure what I can achieve). Be careful not to burn too much early on, you'll pay for it. Good luck every one!
think im going to take advantage of the hill at the start.im sure its going to take advantage of me at the end lol
Good news Rick you dont go back up the hill all the way and at 3 mile ish. It is an out and back but you come back into town a slightly different way. Map is not good but route listed by street in race pack and get a street map of Preston and you can work it out
Hey Sarah, it sounds like your well and truly ready for the big day. Im slightly envious of the half, as you guys have got over 2k runners so it should be quite an event. Im sure your get y our target in some ways, the cooler weather will help.
And leo, there are no mentions of any road clousers in south ribble but then saying that i think the park and ride is closed on Sundays :
The weather forecast for Sunday has change from rain and sunny patches to just rain. Nice!!!
I was thinkin of running it around the same pace as yourself RW
One thing is that everytime I look at the forecast, it has changed to become wetter... but the wind speed is reducing a little each time. For me, I don't mind the rain - but I'll be delighted if the wind isn't a factor. Shame for the spectating family, and the effect it will have on the crowds though.
Hi SJPC... my pace is aimed at an ambitious 4 hours... just because it's a nice round number! For this, I'd need to exceed my expectations. So I've had fun making an excel spreadsheet... and, in case anyone else is interested, I've pasted the output below. I am going to print this out and take it with me... maybe make a wrist-band from it.. I decided against altering it to take account of the hill profile.
Obviously it's about 9:09min/mile needed for 4hrs, which I've included for reference. But I have made the following assumptions: Hold an even pace for 17 miles then start to fade. The last mile will be 16% slower than the first 17 - this fade is introduced gradually over the remaining 9.21miles (about an extra 1.75% fade with each passing mile)
Oh dear... that looked so nice on my screen before I hit submit! Try this. If I see a load of people running all the way round at the same pace as me, and checking off the time at each mile marker, I'll know this was a popular thing to post!
I like your thinking RW and including fading as well, youve really thought about it. I was thinking about maybe trying to hold 8.50 a miles for as long as i could, but now youve mentioned fading maybe i need a mix-up, mashed-up plan too lol

it's not too mashed up really... and my super spreadsheet, it took me a minute to mash up a milage schedule if you want to average 8.50. I kept the same 17 mile cut off, then the slowly progressing fade is introduced. This fade is equivalent to the pace of the last 9.21 miles being an AVERAGE of 9% more than the first 17 miles - as I said, the pace is only slightly slower for mile 18, but by the last mile, it's up to about 16% slower. These figures are the best guess I can make, based on my own training runs, and advice gained from other people. But this is my first marathon, so I might not be the best advisor! So for 8.50 average, this pacing asks for 8:34 miles for the first 17 miles. If you're interested, I can plug in different variables... but suggest Private messaging or people will soon get bored!
I doubt Brain would do anything wrong. Not sure which two maps you mean, but the RunningAhead map is one i put together, as i wanted to be able to see the streets and the elevation profile. Its not brilliant, but it works.
I think Brian did post a mapmyrun one, right at the start of this forum.
No i like your idea RW and by mashed-up i didnt mean in a bad way lol - Think its a great idea that youve come up with and im sure plenty would be interested in your spreadsheet tool.
hey rick... My guess is that 'par' for me is about 4hr 20min but I'm totally inexperienced at races above 10 miles, so I could very easily be 20 minutes either side of that estimate.
There's obviously a huge difference between 3-59-59 and 4-00-01 but for me, there's little difference between, say 4-15 and 4-35.
That's why I chose to work on 4hr pace, but if I'm falling too far behind, I'll not push myself to save a few minutes.... just get round safely and learn from it.
I just printed out my fade-adjusted times, alongside an 'even 9.09' time - double-sided and covered in sellotape (for waterproofing!!) - and it's less than the size of a credit card. I'll pin it to my race number. Should be a useful reference. I just hope I'm somewhere near.
Am sure your be fine RW, in some ways i wish it was my first marathon too and i certainyl wish i had planned out my previous two the way you have planned this one lol
I think i will end up stealing your idea for my pacing plan.
last i heard slokey it was around 1400 but that was maybe two weeks ago, so that number will have changed, although probably not very much. I doubt your get lonely as it seems that your be running around the same pace as myself and RW
i think we will be ok with the 1400 and it if does slow you down a bit at the start then im sure that will help towards the end. But saying that will the down hill start i imagine quite a few might fly off.
Hopefully the start will be a bit better planned than the 10k last month, as we had to walk within the first minute because it bottle-necked, a little bit frustrating to say the least but most people just laughed it off (and it gave me an early excuse for not PBing).
I've decided to stop looking at the weather as it is too depressing, but at least we don't have to worry about keeping cool!
someone sent me a newsletter that was emailed out on 24th October. I've received some in the past, so maybe the spam filter didn't like this one.
It's really aimed at specators though. But just thought I'd let you know, in case you want to chase it up. (to be honest, I don't think you're missing anything important)
Sorry I've rather 'over-posted' today. I guess I'm just a bit excited But that's it for me today... just got to get packed up, then head north.

For me, I definitely need to bank a little bit - but it's defining the 'little bit' that I struggle with.
Good luck everyone - I look forward to the post race analysis .

Am very much looking forward to Sunday now even if it is forecast for rain!
Am doing the half and aiming to get round in under 2 hours, but the faster the better
Is the park and ride at capital centre operating on sunday?

I will be doing the same as you. It's my first half and I'm not going to let bad weather spoil it.
Good luck to everyone. Hope all the training pays off!
Grrrrr
Then the last 385yds in less than 2min 08seconds.
Right. Hopefully that's it. See you there

Those two maps look identical; how is one better than the other? Did Brian get something wrong?

I think i will end up stealing your idea for my pacing plan.
A week or two before the close, I understand there were 1400 in the marathon, and 2600 in the half.
I've no idea what this means for the starting process... Will it be walking pace for the first few hundred yards?
Is it better to hang back before passing over the start line, to allow it to thin out a little?
Or is 1400 not really going to cause a problem (presumably using the same starting layout as for 2600 later that morning.
last i heard slokey it was around 1400 but that was maybe two weeks ago, so that number will have changed, although probably not very much. I doubt your get lonely as it seems that your be running around the same pace as myself and RW

no need to say sorry RW im sure there are a few of us , who can only think about Sunday now he he - Where you traveling up from ?
And I forgot about that situation penguin girl, thats a good point about what happened at the 10k. Best expect to the sandwiched in at the start then!
