  • Same here gem, only 9 days until my first HM! Excited!

I went to Up and Running for my gait analysis and found it to be absolutely spot on, I bought some Mizuno Wave Nexus 6's from them, and then as a back-up pair, found some Wave Nexus 4's online for £30, as I was told there's no technical difference between the 4 and the 6- might be worth doing this?

  • Checking in from the Berlin Marathon 2012 forum (nice new pb of 3:06) - ready to start the next challenge. Seems many of you are well into training already. Had a couple of easy weeks since Berlin but just done a nice 13 miles to get into long running again. Here's to a nice 6 months of hard training.

  • I can't keep up with this thread! The notification thing is really hit & miss.

Ran Cardiff half last week 6 mins slower than last year but really happy to get it out the way and draw a line under a horrible year. Now fully focused on Brightonimage

hoping to get a few cross country races in over the winter.

    hope everyone is keeping well.

  • Hi all, I am using the FIRST Three runs two cycles/swims marathon program. Not for everyne I know but interested to know if anyone else has used it before for a marathon

  • Anyone got any thoughts on how to use hills - in the sense of timings, length of hill etc and how often (rather than just running up them).

I'm resting today then 8 mile race starting and finishing at the local wildlife preservation trust- Durrell Dash - not so sure about the 'dash ' bit!

@Gloryboy yes I agree notifications are a bit slow! I'm also trying to do cross country over the winter, have a few off road races lined up - just short distances as I'm still quite new to it - but I do enjoy them! image

Congratulations on completing the Half Marathon poohbear!

My exam is over and I can concentrate on more than one thing again - at least until the next one is due.  My knee is still sounding crunchy, but is not horrendously painful.  I'm probably delaying the full recovery because I'm still running four days a week.  Today, I ran my first run outdoors since the injury.  Ten miles running "to feel".  It wasn't super fast, but I wasn't unhappy to be running around 8:50 average pace.  I'm hoping to toe the start line at a half-marathon in a fortnight, though it's touch-and-go.  I'm due to see an orthopaedic specialist, but the appointment has been put back to December image

Six months are down already, with just under six months to go to the race!  I'm still planning to run Brighton, with London "in reserve".

Diogodog - I've had the flu jab this year, after suffering badly last winter!

  • Just got a charity place for brighton 2013 and really excited. Will be my first marathon currently running about 5-6 miles several times a week gonna try and start to increase the mileage tomorrow - 10k race in December.
  • Just got back from the Durrel Dash - 8 miles in 1.05 - including some rather tricky inclines!! Next week is the Great South, so just a bit of training - speed work probably and a short run this week till Sunday!

Hotel and flights booked for me and very patient husband and if it all goes pear shaped we'll have a nice weekend away anyway!

  • Back from Abingdon marathon with a new P.B of 3:38:20image, which is over a minute faster than my previous P.B; so i'm happy; but why do I keep forgetting how much it hurts?

Andrew, Andy, Dan and Diagodog - welcome!

Jelleybaby - well done on your run and goodluck for the Great South I,ve done it four times and love the atmosphere, I hope its not too windy in those last couple of miles along the sea front!

  • Blimey, this thread seems to have got very busy since i was last on. Some good running going on tho - congrats all!

AndyC - I did Berlin this year too - a rather more sedate 4:21:38, but I enjoyed every moment. My first marathon too. Looking forward to Brighton.

GloryBoy - I enjoyed the Cardiff Half but felt there were too many people. Prob won't do it again next year.

11 miles yesterday, and 8 hilly miles today. Beautiful sunshine tho - doesn't it make a difference? Hope you're all well and looking forward to another week's running.
  • First run today since Liverpool Marathon last Sunday - did a wee six miler which felt like it was over in a flash!   Lovely day for it.  I'll do another six on Tuesday and then go for ten on Thursday.   Love it!!!  Happy running people. image

Charlotte - you are fast! Congratulations on the PB!

  • pops head in to say hello i haven't run now since the Swindon H/M and all though the plan of doing nothing for the 2 weeks i have off  hasn't gone quite to plan still had some down time still have a few days left but twitchy feet  syndrome has struck so may well go for a 2 miler run tomorrow

Poohbear and i have had a look at a couple of races to incorporate into our training for Brighton which are the Longleat 10k in Feb and the Llanelli H/M in march

  • I too have been looking into races as part of my marathon training running. Although I must get this half marathon out the way first. Have 5 miles to do on Thursday then a gentle 3 miler then the big race on Sunday.

Is it normal to stress over everything the week before the race? I am worrying about getting there on time...about the weather and what to wear...worrying that I have undertrained. My goal is to finish the race so I don't have any time pressures but I am still fretting!
  • Howdy runners!......I had to cut my run short tonight with sore knees image

This seems to be a recurring problem I'm having whenever I tackle the longer runs and pretty much always manifests itself about 8 miles. I've ran thru it the last few times (what I mean is I ran and ignored the discomfort) but tonight I simply had to stop and walk home.....gutted! It's the first training run I've walked on and the first I've abandoned.

I really don't know where to go from here apart from have a rest. I really hope I can sort this out, but haven't got a clue. I had my shoes 'prescribed' to me by one of those fancy shops tha videos your feet and a little part of me is wondering if they are contributing.

I am running in a pair of Brooks Adrenaline GTS12's which have been good so far on shorter distances but if I'm honest this knee problem has appeared on every long run I've done to one degree or another. image not happy

  • Swervin Mervin have you tried taping your knee - youtube do some good clips about how to tape it - but you need a diagnosis first probably? I do hope it improves for Sunday.

Gemgemx yes I get very stressed about every race i do - even local ones! Have I eaten enough/too much, weather, clothes etc etc and this trip is worse because I have to fly (not keen on that but it's improving!), and then cope with trains - we don't have them here, and a stay overnight on Saturday, so altogether it's anxiety provoking, but at the same time I love the running! I have a list of the times of trains, list of what to take etc etc talk about being organised. but it helps to keep the stress levels down!

Perhaps they need to do relaxation exercises before the race rather than warm up image

Hope eveyone's training is going well - looking forward to Sunday!

  • two weeks holiday at Disney Florida coming up at the weekend and i have just informed the missus that i am taking my running stuff and running the Half Marathon whilst there. Did not go down too well!!! image

  • andyc - have a great time at Disney World, I love the place. I can imagine the atmosphere for the half marathon will be something else. Have looked at doing the marathon in January but it does not coincide with our school holidays and I'm not sure I could justify going to Disney World without my 13 year old, even though shes been twice already!

  • cheers charlotte. hoping to get out every morning for at least 5 miles just to keep ticking over - if only i had a photo of her face when she saw the trainers going in suitcase! Cannot wait to go shooting down the waterslides etc .. 2 days and counting

  • Swervin Mervin, I would suggest going to see a sports massage person about your knees.  I swear by mine, I want him to come and live in my house but he wont image.  I had suffered on and off for years with various knee pains, and always figured it was my running style/shoes/skeletal problems.  On each occasion he's had a feel on the muscles around my knees and been able to tell me what kind of stretches or self-massage to do to alleviate the problem.  In my case, its always been a muscular problem thats easily remedied.  Sometimes it even eases off just knowing that its nothing serious!   As well as this, the sports massage in general really help with tired muscles, you'll be bouncing in the following days.   Good luck.

  • Andy, dead jealous, I love Florida and last time we were there we stayed near the Disney shopping village and I was able to run into disney every morning. loved it!

Just booked travelodge for Brighton. Anyone not sorted yet Travelodge have rooms for £19 in local hotels (not in Brighton they are all full price) i booked one between Brighton and Eastbourne £19 bargain! 16 miles should be an easier drive on race day than the 120 from home.

  • Thanks Jelleybaby......I've always thought runners with their knees all wrapped up looked a bit silly......now I understand! Yeh, I'll look into this 'strapping' business and see if it makes a difference.

Ta DiogoDog.....I'm gonna give my legs a rest until Sunday (the longest rest they have had since June tbh....I've been out just about every other night now for four months!) If it doesn't help then I guess I'll need to call a professional!

    Cheers image

  • Morning all

Well the holidays coming to a close back to work on Sunday i have resisted the twitchy feet syndrome so far but must either get out for a run today or go in the garage for a gym session depending on the weather as it looks like it could empty down any minute at the moment

gemgemx hope the race on Sunday goes well and yes it perfectly normal to fret over all those things i done quite a few races and still worry about those things and never sleep well the night before a race

Swerving hope you get the knees sorted remember that rest day are as important as the day’s you run may be cut down on the number of times you go out i only run 4 days out of 7 even when training for Brighton

Andy have a great time at Disney world hope the race goes well and the wife forgives youimage

Charlotte meant to say well done on the PB the other day you are a speedy devilimage

  • well got out for a run today just 3 miles did struggle a bit due to the over eating while on holiday but got around OK will hopefully get out again tomorrow

  • Thanks for the accommodation tip, Gloryboy - will try and get it sorted now!

Got my training plan sorted - an 18 week plan based on one of Hal Higdon's intermediate plans, but with added hills, tempo runs and sprints. It starts on 10th December... Gulp.
  • Good luck to all those on here who have some races planned tomorrow. I am absolutely filled with so much nervous energy that I could burst. Don't know if its excitement, fear, worry or all three!

I have packed my race bag a million times - still no idea how much to wear ..what with the weather forecast.

I am going to stay at my mums this evening as its easier to get in from St Albans to London tomorrow. You would not believe how many times I have checked to make sure that my trainers are actually packed!

Anyway as you can tell I am a bag of nervous waffle.

Will keep you posted as to how I do. First and foremost my aim is to complete the course as its my first half (not counting the HM disaster 11 years ago). I expect to go under 2.30hrs (fingers croseed under 2.20) so completely do-able.

The scary thing is that once this is out the way then the next big one will be Brighton!!!!!!!!!

  • gemgemx - goodluck for tomorrow, relax and go and enjoy itimage.

  • gemgemx good luck tomorrow which race are you running? great parkrun this morning 2 secs off a pb.
  • Hi all,

Great to join the Brighton marathon thread,

After a tough amsterdam marathon for me (shin splints spoilt the enjoyment!!!)

I have used my week off work to plan next yrs races and put into reflection how tough running can be.

I have planned (with the help of asics training plan) in preparation for next yr Brighton marathon. I have planned in some training races and got. Mo Jo back. Have been to gym a couple of times although only able to do very gentle bike ride and light weights. Brought myself a racing bike off a friend and went for a short bike ride today (felt great). I have learned that I need to changed my training for marathons. Only able to road run 3 times a week max, going to mix it up with gym and bike rides so I hopefully don't get injured.

Mixing up my training is helping me look forward to long winter ahead.

Good luck to all in races this weekend.

If u r looking for good races next yr I would suggest:

    Watford half in feb

    Bath half in march

Windsor half (run your pace) in march

Along with GVH who r a running club that run 3 long runs at end of each month for spring marathon races!!!!

Happy running everyone, looking forward to reading and writing on this thread.
  • Good luck Gem! Am doing my first half tomorrow image hoping to go under 2 hours based on training but I'll be glad to get round at all! Which one are you doing? I'm doing Preston Guild.
