As the wetter season approaches and the cold and icy mornings, wondering if I should invest in some waterproof socks - always avoided waterproof shoes as I figure that the first puddle = wet feet, but wondering whether socks are a sensible way to go, and in which case which are good? Not looking to spend a mint...

IMHO waterproof socks (seal skinz etc) are horrible.
Uncomfortable and your feet sweat real bad. Don't waste your money.
I have run in wettest, coldest and most horrid conditions this country can offer and feel whatever the weather your feet have to breathe and dispite what the sales garb says your feet won't in this type of sock.
They seem to be a real 'marmite' thing. I've never bought them as I can't stomach paying out £20 - 30 for a pair of socks, but I've got friends who wear them and roughly half of them hate them and half love them.
crap to run in; great to MTB in
I've tried Seal Skinz socks and gloves (not for running) and thought they were crap. Neither were waterproof.
Right, reckon I'll give 'em a miss - never had that much of a problem with wet feet, it's part of the game.
As above, useful in snow and really cold slush, but otherwise too sweaty and you still feel the cold of the water.
I've considered them for cycling, and have a mate who swears by them for that, but I wouldn't think they'd be great for running in.
