Recommend me a good pair of cushioning running trainers after ACL knee op.

Had an ACL knee op 6 months ago  so just starting to run again however my nike pegs responsive shoe may be a little to hard impact wise for the knee so looking to purchase some cushioning trainers to help the knee, anyone recommend me a good pair thanks, once the knees more solid I can revert back to the pegs.

Thanks

No idea what the answer is, but it's possible that something with a lot of cushiong might cause more problems as it may be less stable and cause more side loading on the knee. Pure conjecture though.

Have a look at the review on the runners world web site, which also includes alternatives along the right hand side of the review

This is an old review, but I'd expect the models from other brands will still be available (just with higher version numbers).  I don't think Nike sell a more cushioned shoe than the pegasus, so you would have to consider other brands.

I would agree with Ian M that going for a more "squidgy" shoe may not help, and could potentially introduce new problems.  Have you considered alternative sports such as cycling to restore your fitness whilst reducing the impact on your knee?

Good luck with the recovery Mark. As others have said you need to be careful, but in my opinion unless the operation has changed your running gait (unlikely) then you should be ok as long as you don't try to 'run before you can walk'.

The knee will need to support you as your running improves again and I would have thought if your normal shoe type is cushioned I would continue that way. Using a shoe with too much support may cause other problems!

I use Asics Gel Nimbus (currently 14 but the series for some time) and they are fantastic. I think the current shoe is the lightest and best they've ever made. Have, from time to time, tried other brands but always come back to what has worked for me.

Finally, I'd get over to a specialist running shop for gait analysis to make sure you are in the right shoe. Alternatively, an email to RW might find you some advice from someone who really knows what they are talking about! Good luck!

  • Hi Mark,

I would have to agree with DS2, you should visit a specialist running shop to get a gait analysis carried out.  I would recommend Sweat Shop - they will provide some good advice for free with no obligation to buy + you have 30 days to take them back if they don't do the job.

Would also recommend some cross training to supplement your training - to keep pressure off your knee!

    Best of luck!

    Rob

  • I have ACL reconstruction 4 years ago and have run quite a few 10 milers, half maratjons and a marathon since. Best thing to do is go to a specialist running shop. I had the asics gel 3 series and am now on the asics gt series. I definately found that I need cushioning and support. Most of all find ones that you are comfortable in!
