The Bah Humbug thread

I shall be at work on Christmas Day. For when I get home I have a small turkey joint in the freezer. It will feed me for a few days, or me and Muttley Jnr for one day if the little bleeder shows up. Otherwise, I am keeping my head down and ignoring Christmas. And I shall definitely be going for a run.

This is the card I have sent to the rellies this year. Bah humbug image

  • My Christmas is a non-starter too.  I left all the decorations with Hubby when we split, and I am skint so don't have any money to buy more.  It is also not possible for me to go back to my family this year, and I have no money for presents.  Few people know my new address so I'm not getting many cards either.

I've started spring cleaning today in the hope that it will encourage spring to show her face quicker.

  • hear hear

I am going on a long bike ride if I get my steering fixed and the weather stays the same as the current forcast - only good thing about xmas is the quiet roads.  I have thrown out an invitation to other riders on the understanding that anyone that turns up with tinsle anywhere on theri bikes or person will get a damn good slap

I will spend the next few days with an increasing sense of wretchedness which will completely vanish when I wake up on boxing day

  • I have just posted that picture on my facebook page

  • I am also feeling bah humbug, but it is subsiding with a dose of Christmas Carols on CD played extra loud to get the organ music sounding great.
Too much to do, I want to do exercise and have a bit of me time and bl**dy FiL is dithering over whether to come to us is stressing me out. I know he is having his first Xmas without wife but at 91 he is acting more like a 5 year old.
Maddy I would love to get out for a bike ride but the roads round me are too flooded and the cyclepaths where they exist are just little rivers and long lakes.

  • SteadyCJ I am lucky considering how close we are to a tidal river - raods are OK and the onse I plan to take for the ride shoul dbe OK - its easy to go up around me

  • Christmas day  ( fortnight) in the NHS is pants- no-one wants to do their job, and if you are trying to look after sick patients, it is all jst very irritating.

    Love the card!

  • I always make a point of working on Christmas Day. It allows colleagues with families and kids to have time off. And it's a double pay day so that's a win all round.

I have my black bah humbug santa hat at the ready ...

    Reminds of something, ah yes.

March 25th. Please refrain from sex today. Any child conceived today will be born on Christmas day. Not only will the hospital staff curse you to hell, but they'll all be pissed out of their minds too.

    🙂

My mum used to work christmas day morning at the hospital and she actually said it was a sad place to be. You used to see all of the old dears who had been shifted there by their family that didnt want to have the 'added pressure' of them at christmas.

I'm aware from 'my' family for a second christmas and I do miss it. I shouldn't complain as hubbys family are very nice and lovely but there's nothing like being at home at waking up in bed.... *sigh*.

This year Christmas day will be just me and my Squeeze image

This is the first time in my 51 years that I've done this, I've wanted to for years!  I hate the pressure you get from all and sundry (including my Squeeze) that you have to go here, have to go there, have to invite people.

Why?  If you don't bother going/inviting the rest of the year, why do it all in one week in December for f*cks sake?

    Humbug indeed!

Just shown that to 2 members of the NHS who will be working over Christmas, Both hope that you have need of their services so they can show you how pissed they are

  • Like many I have had my ups and downs. I do not live in the past but I do hurt  at  Christmas for all sorts of reasons. However I am not a "humbug" guy and do smile and enjoy the jollity. I do have a drink but I am not a great drinker so I manage to keep up my running  over the festive period irrespective of dinners/lunches and shopping for gifts.

I hope you all get the best out of what holidays you take over the festive period and  it all passes over quickly for you, if like me you find it all a bit uncomfortable.image

  • I was all for Bah Humbug. I was going to be working over Christmas.

Things change and am now doing Christmas. Not all the food and wine and pressie bit. Just the thinking about the ones you love, being together and taking time out. We've put the tree up and some decorations, it looks quite pretty.

Yes Martenkay, it may well turn out to be an 'uncomfortable' Christmas. I don't really want it to pass quickly but I do want it to be peaceful. Can't take the pain away.

I was reading about the tradition of holy and ivy at Christmas. It's pagan to keep the house gremlins or evil spirits away. I could really have done with knowing that earlier.

  • Roll on 2nd January so i can get back into my running as guests have stopped my rota and i have to fit it in round them. I hate xmas uhhh!!
  • Oh dear. I don't hurt at Christmas, I just don't much care for it. Too much commercialism and unwanted socializing for someone like me who has everything he needs and is resistant to forced jollity.

I shall wear my black bah humbug hat at work this afternoon.

    *grump grump grumpity grump*

    Sense of humour bypass then?

The paragraph came from the 'Not the Nine O'clock News Year Book 1982'

I don't recall wishing misfortune on anyone. So hardly a proportional or even a rational response.

  • Yeah I suppose working over Christmas sorting out drunks does that to people, and of course as it came from a NTNON year book it's worth repeating

I don't blame them for feeling aggrieved at all.

The amount of trouble they get from those who've had ten too many is ridiculous. I wish them the best of luck. image

I don't like all the extreme consumerism and commercialisation of what is, allegedly, a religious celebration.

MrFrog and I are doing our usual volunteering thing with homeless people for the week. It started early for me on Friday when a guest I knew from previous years showed up at work (I work and volunteer for the same organisation). Not a chap I like, but he's human and was in a state. He was also really pleased to see me and smiled as I remembered him. His story is not uncommon in that though he is now classified as 'vulnerable' and has a local council who will accommodate him, his other issues prevent him from settling. He left his b&b on Thursday night to go and sleep at Heathrow. He needs serious help, not just a roof and four walls.

Last night on our first shift, we found that a friend who has volunteered with us for several years was there as a guest. Always fragile something has tipped him over the edge this year. At least with us for the week he'll be with people who really care for him and hopefully we'll be able to get something sorted out for him.

    Merry Christmas.
  • im feeling very christmassy and i thought i'd come over here to cheer you all up image

Christmas started out as a pagan New Year festival, but was hijacked by the Christians in the Middle ages.

I guess they wanted some of the fun the Druids were having.

    🙂

Night two and it rained. I was outside. Managed to get a couple of guests to open up and talk about their situation and persuade them to start using the daytime services today.

    And now to bed.
  • Womble, you aren't a Bah Humbug.  What you're doing will make Christmas for many of your guests and hats off to you!

  • I'm at work right now.
