need new trainers - marathon!

Hi

I currently wear Mizuno Alchemy 10 trainers.  I am training for the Paris Marathon in April and would like to get some new trainers to continue my training with.

As mentioned i currently have mizunos which are fine, but i've had them for over a year and are a little on the heavy side.

I over-pronate quite a lot and have occasional back problems so i need a stable shoe but i want one thats a bit lighter in weight.

I have had asics kayanos and saucony in the past.  The asics i found wore down very quickly and wasnt a massive fan for the money that i paid.  The saucony's were really heavy.  I have also had some other asics for faster runs which i liked but wouldn't give me the support for a marathon.

I have quite wide feet too to add to the problem.

I'm 5ft 8 and around 10 st...i tend to run quite heavy too (if that makes a difference!)

Can anyone recommend a good trainer for over-pronators (not mild) thats quite lightweight and will last marathon training and marathon distance?

Thanks image

I find the runningwarehouse.com web site very useful for comparing trainers.  You can't buy from them as they are a US only web site.

It only has Men's Mizuno Alchemy 12 shoes listed, and suggests Brooks Adrenaline GTS and Saucony Omni as alternatives.  But it may be worth a bit of searching around the web site for more info etc.

I think you may struggle to find a shoe that matches all your criteria, as the structured shoes for severe over pronators tend to be heavy due to the additional cushioning etc built into them.

Personally I tend to buy my shoes online as I have a fairly standard gait & foot-strike, but in your case I think you would be best served by visiting some specialist running shops and getting their advice.  This will also give you the opportunity to try out these recommendations on a treadmill before buying.

  • At 330g for a support shoe, that doesn't seem particularly heavy for marathon training. If they served you well for all the criteria you mention, other than weight, stick with them. What weight are you looking for?
