I have couple of 10k races this month which in the rules don't allow runners to wear headphones. I don't want to open up the old debate about whether you should do races with music or not as I think that has been done to death... But I have always run with an Ipod touch on my arm as I use the Nike plus app. Will this be ok if I don't have headphones or do some races not allow Ipods at all?

haha
I imagine you would be asked to dispose of the cigarette because they would have no proof that you were not going to light it.

surely you've answered your own question. Rule is no headphones, you don't have headphones. What's the query?
Do you think there will be a crack team of stewards checking noone has an ipod about their person? Do you think that would work?
Hmm. So I could race with a pair of speakers strapped to my shoulders?
Well if you wanted to be an arsehole, you could dredge up the ambiguous rule about electronic assistance, but honestly SK you will be fine. You do seem to take things seriously and literally, if only the people who do wear earphones did the same. You will be OK, like you allude to above, it's just the same as a Garmin.
SK, I didn't say YOU could, I said I could... I like my music!
My solution in real life is to use just one earphone. I do like the idea of little speakers though
As most races have distance markers, often every mile or km, would it not be easier and cheaper to wear a large display stop watch rather than risk upsetting the marshalls, and potentially having your equipment stolen!
A woman in my club wears her ipod on her arm, but not her earphones (cos it would be rude) on club runs. It announces the stats out loud every mile, which freaked me out the first time I was running near her when it happened (and also pissed me off because we weren't going as fast as it felt like). But it doesn't look like she's listening to music because she doesn't have her headphones in. Marshals will just be looking for the wires going up to the ears, if they bother looking at all.
Its not about ipods and headphones.
The issue is about whether or not you are aware of anything outside your own little musical world.
If you want to operate in such an insular fashion. Best not do so when others can be affected by your actions.
If you get in the way and you cannot hear anyone asking you to move then you might get edged aside, hard!
🙂
Wow a talking GPS that would cool in a race, when you cross the line does it go
TAAA-DAA and then say "200 metres to bar"
This "edge aside, hard" point is bollocks. It's the responsibility of the person approaching from behind to pass safely.
I'm going to wear my running gear( which is just shorts and t-shirt and trainers)
to the next night club i go to and i'm going to gently jog in and out of the dancers while listening to a bit of Chase + status.
I won't shout or yell at the dancers if they are in my way i'll just weave past them
with a smile.
I do love my music.
