Running Shoes

I am relatively new to running, running for just a year with 6 miles being my longest run.  Occasionally my ankles ache whilst I am running, do you think this can be down to the trainers I am using, they are Nike Running trainers but I wondered if there is somewhere you can go to get specific ones to suit your instep etc.,  I want to increase my distance over the course of this year as I want to do a half marathon before the end of the year?

  • Not experienced myself, but from reading other threads, take them to the running shop and ask them to check your shoes, if they suggest different ones then get some new ones, it can only help i guess.

  • sweatshop video'd me running to check gait etc and helped me choose shoes that were suitable for me .

also running shoes have an expiry , after , i think 500 miles (someone correct me if i'm wrong?) they should be replaced as prob do not support properly from wear and tear and general use, they can always be demoted to garden shoes/walking the dog rather than binned.

the aches could be down do the actual exercise epspec if you usually run shorter distances then try and push further and maybe overdo it?

hard to speculate really, deffo get some advice from a specialist footwear shop, even if you don't purchase immediately , they are so helpful.

  • yes - defrinitely go to  a runnnig shop and get checked out- runner's need, or similar- they can advise about best types of shoes- don't buy from any where that doesn't want to see you actually running- whether on a treadmill, or in the shop- they need to judge your gait pattern to give proper advise.

  • Thanks everyone for your advice, think I will take myself along to the running shop to get my shoes checked out.

I've never got this. A 6 min mile runner will do half as many steps per mile as a 12 min mile runner, and both of them have shoes that last 500 miles? I throw mine away when they fall apart, reasoning that my legs will get used to the impact as the cushioning wears away!

  • Good point chubby bloke never thought of it that way...image
