Also known as the Polish shop ... I visited a local one here in Reading and had forgotten just how good they are.
Tonight's dinner was sweet-pickled herrings in sour cream source ... but it could just as easily have been bigos stew, or slaki tripe, or fasolka beans, or roast buckwheat with kielbasa or kabanos sausage and some pickled cabbage, or pierogi stuffed dumplings ...
Lovely rib-sticking central European food, can't beat it on a cold winter's day

I often make Finnish foods (For obvious reasons)
10 years ago it was really had to find anything Scandinavian over here. Seemed to have a lot of Polish shops but nothing Scandinavian really apart from Ikea.
Nowadays thank god I can get stuff from Ocado and even from Candy Hero
Boston in Lincolnshire has a large Eastern European community, so there's plenty of Polish, Lithuanian and Latvian shops there. You'd be spoiled for choice there. A lot of the locals take quite a racist attitude towards them, but they are hard working people and keen to make a success of their lives in the UK.
I have a few Polish friends and I love their cookings. I don't like to make any myself, I prefer them authentic and I like that sometimes someone cooks for me for a change
There's a Polski sklep near where I live, but it's never open when I go past on my way to work or coming home.
It's in a shop which has changed hands about six times in the last few years - it was even a tattoo parlour for a while, seems no-one can make a go of it.
There's a good half a dozen in Reading. Including one run by a bloke from Afghanistan and specializing in Baltic foods - which are pretty much the same as Polish tbh and none the worse for that. There's even a Polish pub here.
which is notorious for violence!
having lived with someone Polish the cuisine appears to be bland, mainly boiled and pork oriented.
Heh, the couple of times I've been there I did notice blokes with shaved heads, tattoos and no necks hanging around ... they looked like they could handle themselves so maybe I was there the wrong nights ..
having lived round the corner last year that sounds like any night
Nothing wrong with meat and vegetables in gravy - sounds like a roast to me
Zywiec pretty nice lager I reckon
Try telling the French that cassoulet isn't international cuisine!
Bigos is a bit more than meat and veg in gravy y'know .. Bit like saying coq au vin is a lump of chicken in sauce
Bigos is mainly made of cabbage and there's no gravy involved. To think of it not much veg either, other than wild mushroom. Not too keen on it myself but haven't come across anything remotely similar in any other cuisine.
Being Polish I'm not a big lover of Polish food (I would agree with Too Much Water on the blandness front) but glad to hear so many enjoy it!
I must also point out that Polish ladies are very attractive ...
second you on that one!! the accent is rather sexy in my opinion
And they don't disfigure themselves with tattoos or mutilate themselves with piercings, which only adds to the pulchritude score in my ever so 'umble opinion ...
Well, I find it scary. If I see a jar of flaki I have to leave the shop immediately.
fact.
And they seem able to comfortably knock back levels of strong booze, that even our most asbo tastic teens would baulk at.
I hate to perpetuate any sweeping generalisations being discussed here but I am reminded of a night when me and my Polish gf at the time got through a bottle of champagne between us on holiday. I don't think I had much of it. It was a good night.
