  • Congratulations Jen, im so happy for you...hope your celebrating tonight imageimageimage, its fantastic when you get out what you put in. image

So then guys how did it go today?

I started the 9 mile race today with my legs feeling surprisingly ok after the 20 on friday so I decided to race it. After the first 2 miles I then decided that I might have been alittle too ambitious as my legs started to feel heavy. My 4 miles however they had loosened up and felt great so I just ploughed on. I managed 9 miles in 1;02;08 according to mrs Garmin (over 6 mins quicker than last year - but I was just returning from illness and it was my long run of the week). Its a very hilly course so im hoping to get just under one hour on my next 9 miler in 3 weeks time which is completley flat.

    mile splits;

    6:55, 6:53, 6:59, 7:01, 6:59, 7:09, 6:55, 6:59, 6:25. Average pace 6:55. Guess where the steepest hill was??

  • Hi Clive...must have posted at the same time.....sorry to hear about your neck, how did you do it?...remember to keep it moving!

    Well done Jen. Brilliant!

I've already congratulated Sarah on her thread but well done again. Amazing stuff.

We had a good day at Spitfire. I ran 2:28:39 off a 3 1/2 min negative split. Very happy!

Malcs and Ady ran together and executed their plan perfectly. No doubt they will be on to provide details at some point. Really good to see them both

Jen-tastic! Wow - did you feel the power of the Scarlets coarsing through your veins? Were they playing Yma O Hyd as you ran out? image

Great running - well done you power squating wannabe ultra nut!

Sarah - if that's what you run on an undulating course then you will make easy pickings of anything remotely horizontal. Wow! You only seem to be further justifying the suggestions that you have the potential to absolutely murder your race PBs and in particular your marathon. Well done!

Had a fantastic day at Spitfire. Really great to meet up with DS2 and Ady. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of you at TR24 now. We were saying that we should try and organise some other races where more of us can meet up.

Ady had pretty ambitious targets from Sam: 8:45-9mm 1st 10 then 8mm for the 2nd 10. I was hoping to follow him so I nearly fell off my chair when I read that. However, he pulled me along and we were joined by another forumite, Young Pup which helped alot.

Quite tough switching from 8:45 ish down to 8 suddenly but after a couple of miles it wasn't so bad. It was hard but manageable and I found that my sore legs that usually kick in at 15 miles were delayed until 18ish, which was great! Best of all the two days rest, stretching and rolling seemed to have sorted my hamstring out. I suspected it was just tightness and it seems that's exactly what it was but that didn't stop me moping around for two days in a state of worry image

We got round in 2:45 so I'm over the moon with the result. I've never done so much MP mileage in a training run before so it's a huge confidence boost. I'll be honest, the thought of doing 26 at MP scares the me more than a power squatting session with Jen (that's scary) but I still have a good 4-5 weeks training left so who knows.

DS2 - thanks for your company today. Sorry we couldn't get anywhere near your pace but the chat and the bacon sarnies afterwards was a real pleasure - an occasion that must be repeated!

Clive - sorry to hear that you were grounded. I hope the neck clears up. Does being a medic make these things easier or harder to deal with?

  • DS2DS2 ✭✭✭
Likewise Malcs. I'm sure Ruth the dietician doesn't follow this thread so it'll be ok to mention Ady eating all of those bacon sandwiches!!! Haha
  • jenfjenf ✭✭✭

Sarah, DS2 , Malcs , I'm SO glad your races went well, we've all been putting in the hard miles, so its really great to see the well deserved results! I love reading your race reports.

I've been celebrating with red wine n chocolate image  and I'm following that with a week visiting my daughter in Abu Dhabi,( with no running!!!!) so I may not be on the thread much next 10 days! I'll be back to SERIOUS Snowdon training after that.

Clive, hope neck clears quickly. My half was on home ground, starting at Llanelli Scarletts rugby stadium, then a breezy coast path!

  • Bacon sandwiches, red wine and chocolate...its certainly a good thing that Ruth isnt on here! After the weekends races i feel that we all needed a bit of a treat image

Congratulations DS2, Malcs and Ady on doing so well at the spitfire. I have my 20 miler in two weeks time and im really dreading (but also excited) about doing so many MP miles in a run. Like what you said Malcs, the transition from running slower to picking up the pace at mile 10 will be the hardest and then those last few miles when you want to slow down...but what a confidence boost when you have done it. I dont even want to mention maintaining that pace for 26.2 miles...the thought at the moment scares me...but like what they have been saying on minnis thread, the taper together with all the training makes it easier on the day ( I hope) image

Abu Dhabi sounds exciting. Hope that you have a fabulous time, cant wait  to hear all about it when you get back Jen image

  • Forgot to say Malcs, im glad your legs are feeling okey again

  • Wow guys you lot are doing some awesome running! I'm looking forward to my long walk (have that mind set then it can only get better!) another two weeks and that is my long runs done and dusted!! and to be honest I'm looking forward to doing more short runs, although saying that what is the best way to train for TR24?

I collected my road bike yesterday and all I  can say is OOUUCCHH!! My friend who was fixing it for me lives a mile away from my house, I thought when he said he was going to take me for a bike ride it was going to be just back to my house! Oh no... 10 miles later I was home..... as I thought it was only a short ride I wore jeans!!!!  Ouch is a complete understatement!!! all that said I thought I should have a day off the bike today!

So I ran to the pool swam then ran home, to then find I and now leading the beginners session with the running club tonight! Fabulous!

  • DS2DS2 ✭✭✭
Tigger- ouch indeed! Us MAMIL's (middle aged men in Lycra) don't wear it just because we look good! Get online and order some Lycra - you won't regret it.

    Try:

You'll be on there for hours!

Sarah - thanks. Did a recovery run today and leg seems ok. It's at this point in training where something usually goes wrong so I'm being very careful.

I'm sure you'll have no problem with those MP miles. Nice idea to do MP then slow, then MP. I've only ever done the MP stuff at the end. Might have to try that.

Tigger - I don't know what's the best way to train for TR24. Last year I just did my normal running and then as the event got closer I did a few double 6 milers - so 6 in the morning and 6 in the afternoon. I also did one late at night (10pm) to see how that felt but to be honest I don't think you need to.

That said, it is worth trying running with your head torch beforehand so you know it's comfortable and that it fits ok. Probably best to combine that with the late night run as running in the day with a head torch on will simply make you look like a nutter...or more of a nutter in your caseimage

Jen - liking the celebration routine! Have a great time in Abu Dhabi Doo!

  • Hi everyone, sorry for the lack of postings outside my own thread... been super busy as usual.

I've just been trying to have a bit of a catch up - everyone has been up to so much! Sounds like everyone is doing really well image

I saw a couple of the Spitfire pics on Ady's thread - looks like you three had a great day.

You should have seen the breakfast Mel and I tucked into before heading to training day... Healthy it was notimage

Have a great time in Abu Dhabi Jen! I expect plenty of pics on facebook.. And a postcard. And for you to bring the sunshine back with you.

  • haha..trying to get the image of you all running in the day with your head torches on now.

Just wondering do we need a torch each or can we share one? Never used one so im a bit of a novice?

Tigger your last two days sound evil....hope you survived the beginners club and now have your feet up.

Hi Steve..im guessing Ruth was out of eye sight then?
  • Hey Guys, great to see the thread's still going strong, although I've skimmed it since my last post I've not taken most of it in. Bit of an extended absence for me due to (in no particular order) hols, sickness and work.

Went for my first run in ages (if you can call it that! 3 min walk, 5 min run, 3 min walk, 6 min run, 3 min walk) felt great even if it was only a little activity. Unfortunately didn't go so well yesterday when I tried to repeat itimage Will stick with it though, for the first time in a while I feel confident I can sort these knees out, albeit slowly!

  • MalcsMalcs ✭✭✭

Great to hear you're back Indy. Definitely take it nice and easy!

Steve - best of luck with that knee. Do let us know how the scan goes.

  • DS2DS2 ✭✭✭

Indy - good to see you back on here and running, even if it's early days!

Sarah - I don't know much about headtorches but I understand that it is best to have it on your head in a way that shines the light forward as opposed to backwards. I deally, you would have two on your head, one pointing forward and the other backwards so that it blinds the runners behind you and ensures that you remain in front of them.

This could be a winning tactic!image

Hey Steve, we had a good day at Spitfire. The five of you are all going really well - you are doing this thread proud! Keep it up!

Malcs - how are your legs? I got out for an easy 6 miler this morning in 8:24mm. Felt surprisingly good. Which is probably just as well because I'm due to run again this evening and then 15 tomorrow morning! It was glorious on the downs first thing.

  • MalcsMalcs ✭✭✭

Sarah will probably need a flashing blue light on top too and a two tone siren to warn other runners that she's coming! image

Sharing is fine Sarah - so long as you buddy up with someone who, hmm, how should I say? Someone who you're comforfortable exchanging sweat with (I was going to say bodily fluids but even I wouldn't stoop so low - oops, I just did). image

DS2 - legs are not bad. Not 100% but pretty good considering. Had a little recovery run yesterday which helped. The sun is shining here so I'm very tempted to do my MLR today. Will be taking it slow if I do.

8:24 is impressive - my recovery run was an ultra cautious 9:30 ish! image

Are you running the same tonight?

  • Yeah will definitely take it easy, Physio's doing nothing on my knees so thought I'd try and build strength through running a bit at a time, slowly slowly catch a monkey as they say!

Been referred to a knee specialist at last so hoping they can shed some light on it and give me something solid, need to up my excercise levels to shift the spare tire that's rapidly growing around my midriff!

Just noticed you're having a scan on your knee Steve, I hope it's nothing serious, I've missed a lot of the posts over the last few weeks.
  • DS2DS2 ✭✭✭

Malcs - only ran at that pace because I was rubbish at judging it. I felt comfortable at that pace and it actually felt worse when I tried to slow down!

Meant to be a 4 miler tonight but may not have time now. Been manic at work today for all sorts of reasons and likely to be in the office until after 7pm.

  • DS2DS2 ✭✭✭

Indy - have you tried cycling at all - either on the road or on a static bike in a gym?

Steve - How is the knee feeling. What are they looking for with the scan? I hadn't realised you were still having problems. I remember reading that it was playing up after your last race. is that still the issue?

  • MalcsMalcs ✭✭✭

DS2 - I believe they are worried Steve may have a cartilage tear. Needs a scan to confirm. If this is the case then he may need an op but they reckon they can manage it until Paris is over.

Running in the evening might not be such a bad idea btw. When I went out at midday it was roasting. I can't believe you can get such different conditions in the space of a couple of days. It was like freakin' summer. I'd be very happy if it stayed like this for a while though as it would be good to get used to running in the warm.

Indy - You're definitely doing the right thing seeing an expert. Do you have a date yet?

  • No date yet, have thought about cycling but no bike and I don't have access to a gym, knee's very tender today, so maybe running wasn't as successful as I thought! I've taken up the 100 press up challenge to give me something to focus on and am trying to add some swimming to my routine.
  • Hey Indy Defo gotta start swimming!! It really does help with the running when you get back to it! just watch which stroke, breast stoke can put pressure on the knee on the kick, where as freestyle shouldn't be an issue..... although I'm no doctor they may have something different to say!

  • Indy - definitely build up slowly after so long out - you'll get back to where you were before you know it and it's better to do that than rush things and end up injured again! I've been doing a bit of swimming on and off as well and it's a great way to build up some cardiovascular fitness in a nice, low-impact way.

Tigs - I hadn't thought of that! Freestyle would definitely make a lot more sense... thanks docimage

DS2 - Malcs is spot on - physio Sarah suspects a cartilage tear... but whatever happens, I'll be lucky to get the scan pre-Paris and there certainly won't be time to do anything about it so at the moment it's just a few days rest, lots of icing, anti-inflammatories and we'll see what happens... It's just going to be a case of making do and, if I have to, getting a piggy back over the last few miles from a passing frenchman!

  • Great advice Tigger, will give it a go.

I completely agree Steve, will be starting from scratch and building up very slowly so as to ensure I don't suffer again, I hope your knee issue is a minor one, I've been out of action for nearly 3 months and no real sign of any improvement. At least you can get a scan though, that's proving to be difficult on the nhs!
  • WHOO HOO I finally have something useful to say!!

Haha just had an email and it reminded me of you guys.... especially RRR and DS2.... 30% of Compression socks open the email and it's all colours!!

  • ooo and while I sound like I know what I'm on about..... If you borrow a pool buoy you can train without your legs....simples!!

  • Haha, right then, so im looking for a two way headtorch on amazon!!!!

People might mistake me for a doctor or even a paramedic if I go for a blue light......wouldnt fancy their chances! Eww...theres always one that lowers the tone...Malcs!!!

Warm weather???? when did that happen??? By the time ive left work its been cold, wet and foggy!

Whats a pool buoy?? is it like those in the sea?
  • Probably not the easiest thing to describe without sounding like Malcs, but it's something you put between your legs.

Basically it keeps your legs afloat without you needing to kick so you propel yourself through the water with just your arms... Looks a bit like this.

Awesome, I could get some arm bands as well and just bob along...
