  • That's a good solid week there Grendel!

I cant seem to string runs together of late, maybe the arrival of my new vest will spur me on? Should hopefully be here soon, I ordered it on the 27th December!!! image

I seem to be stuck on 2 long runs?! Need to really get my long runs above 20 soon...

For now rest is needed as Mr Knee isnt happy today

  • Lulusmum - You could try a grid roller AKA Orange roller of doom. It helped me but I was nearly recovered by the time I got it. Anything that painful must be doing something.

A hilly 4 mile off road run around Creag Coinnich in light snow today. Anyone who has read 'Feet in the Clouds' may remember this as the site of the worlds oldest recorded fell run. Though they go up it and I went round it.

Quiet weekend coming up, having been 80%-100% occupancy for the last 5 weekends we are just over 10% this weekend. Who knows why, but the forecast certainly isn't encouraging people to come.

Nice slow 5.23 to ease my slightly sore hip flexor back into it (put my laces through a few too many footballs last week image).

  • Morning all!

Spent my Friday night 'building' my own huaraches Shoe nerd alert! (image thanks for Xero shoes tip B2B) Had a little run up the road in them, have high hopes for a blister-free summer.

Off to Bath spa today, long run tomorrow.

    Happy running

Woke up early this morning, with a 6 mile run planned - really didn't feel like it. Had a headache, and a raging thirst - turned the alarm off, took two extra strong anadin, a long drink of sparkling mineral water - ran 8 miles - will try and do the 6 tomorrow

  • Grendel3Grendel3 ✭✭✭

So here we go then, yesterdays promised 6 miles, braced myself and headed out into the arms of a howling snow storm. Turning round I grabbed my hat and mentally calculated how many miles I needed to reach 40 for the week.  38
from 40 is 2, 2miles to run. Turning into the maelstrom that was this weird spring morning, and leaving Nathan watching part 1 of the Top Gear special for the umpteenth time, I headed out. 2 miles just 2 miles to do. Easy, you'd think. But no couldn't manage it.  8.25 miles later I walked back in doors, cold wet what a brilliant morning to be out doors. Happy Sunday. And yes Nathan was still watching the Top Gear Special!!!!

  • Hey all,

Yes it snowed here too (not settling) how's Scotland HRHB, still frosty?

Post-spa cocktails yesterday after prosceccio - god love 40th birthday dos - but made for a less than enthusiastic me this morning, dragging myself out image

Ran 5miles, Cyclometer told me I took 44mins. Discovered that it had logged my first mile as 4.4minutes (definitely suspect) because I was picking up wifi from all the other houses. All a bit wierd as its never done that before but worth it to see the look on my husband's face when for a nano-second he thought I'd run like Paula and clocked a sub 5min mile image
  • Gammineez - welcome aboard the crazy train! image Did you buy some Xero or homemade? If homemade what did you try?! My first ones were made from a doormat and shoe laces! image Did a 4 mile then a 6 then finally a 10 before getting mad blisters under my toes due to the laces being too tight!! I would really recommend trying some different toppers for the foot bed as it also helps keep the blisters down, another one that might work for you is injinji socks. I find them great for a while but sometimes the separate toes can be a little irritating. I'm looking into trying some tabi socks to see if its any better. I think they would be a lot quicker and easier to put on during a long run if i needed them.

Grendel - Your pretty hardcore! image The cold really puts me off, getting out the door is the toughest part of the run!

  • He is to hardcore for gyms David! image Grendel runs pretty much everyday without fail rain or shine

  • So, after a good couple of 5k's the other week, had to take some time out due to work/injury/insert excuse here. Managed a pitiful 4k on Thursday morning, but come Sunday managed 5k in under 28 mins followed by a half hour of speed work - it felt awesome.

Lets hope it feels awesome when I get into the gym at 5.00am tomorrow!
  • Hey peeps, just put up my first review of Xero hope you enjoy!  image

Nice one Chuckles! Keep it up! image

David - why would you want to go to a gym - where is the joy in that?  I know people do - I am in a facebook group with some people from America and their weather has been pretty poor and just to get some miles in they have been running on treadmills. a few degrees below freezing and and gale coming off the North Sea and snow fall measured in cms hardly means a trip to the gym.

Well 47.65 miles last week sooooooooooo close to 50!!!!

Felt crap yesterday so threw a sicky - but managed to get   in 60 minutes running so just over 6 miles done - felt better this morning so ploughed my way through the cms of snow falling - 6.25 miles done - Happy days

Have just read Born to Run - find it funny now that he is talking about Lance Armstrong and the way he recovered etc - if only he knew - perhaps a slight re-write is in order.  Now ploughing my way through Ghost Runner, before tackling Seb Coe's autobiography.

  • Hi all,

It was -11 here yesterday morning, but a beautiful sunny day. Once I kicked all the guests out and cleaned up I went out for a little 3 miler. Felt a bit tight at the top of the legs later in the day. I think I may have been tensed up running on icy roads and through a snow covered golf course.

Supposed to do 8 miles this morning but am listening to my body as it still feels tight in the legs, so have decided to postpone it until Friday. I have a 2 hour drive and a 3 hour train trip later today, then 2 days at a conference to follow. Really don't want to sit through all that if the run makes me worse.

Mrs HRHB is hoping to make her return to the roads this week after her line dancing injury, which has stopped her for over 2 weeks.

B2B - Interesting article on the Xeros. Probably not for me if they give you cold feet. I would have no chance here. I may consider a pair though to keep in my rucksac for river crossings. My problem with sandals has always been with my feet slipping around in them which you mentioned being an issue for the Lunas.

  • Grendel - ha ha ha good point! Ghost runner is pretty good!

HRHB - Thanks! image When it warm up a little im going to try them through water and see what happens, I think adding a leather topper may help but not sure?

  • Well it turns out 5.30 this morning wasn't too bad! Managed a decent 5k in just under 28 minutes, although not being able to face the -3degrees outside, I have to admit this was on the treadmill.

Got to work on the speed next, but I'm sure this'll come in time.

Nice early 4 miles done this morning, beautiful out there. Will promise to catch up real soon but typing time at a premium with the wife hogging the laptop lately to complete her college assignments.

  • well done guys!

Logged onto my blog today to find an extra 30 views for just today!!! image guess this thing could really work!

  • Grendel3Grendel3 ✭✭✭

To be fair one of them was me!!!!

Well done for gettig ut at 5:30 Chuckles - next step is outside - it is getting easier now as it is a lot lighter now than it was a couple of weeks back - Struggling a bit at the moment - Hamstring still a bit sore and both calves quite painful thanks to a barefoot experiment which seemed to be going OK but after 65 minutes has left a couple of 'hot spots' and sore calves - the experiment took place on Monday when I was home alone - no logging on to porn sites for me - out in the garden running bare foot - on the garden path one way then the other - won't repeat it for a whille!!!!

Still I put 65 minutes down as 6 miles - then ran 6.25 yesterday and the same for today - Happy days

  • image nice one Grendel! Every little helps! image

Bloody hell Grendel, 65 minutes barefoot is a little too much if it was your first go!

  • Previously in a time BC (before children), I only used to run outside, but thankfully due to a new gym opening, I managed to get my membership for £10 a month for the first year - useful whilst I lose some weight and get back into the swing of things.  I'm only using it for the treadmill though, which means I'll give it up in a month or two when the weather warms up!  I really can't deal with anything under 5 degrees at the moment!

  • Hi Everyone...

    Help,Guidence, sort...

i'm 51 and started running two months ago (first time since school)havent realy done much sport 'just the odd game of football after a few pints in me twentys..

like i said started running and after three weeks completed my first 5k 27minutes.. and ever since i go out and run against the previous time down to 23.20. so its like running a race every other day, now heres the rub..

i was reading various threads on here and came across a lad doing exactley what i'm doing and he was quickley brought to task about going about it all wrong....

Reading on i was convinced that was the case,...Guilty.. and people started going on about easy runs ,long runs, tempo runs, hill sprints, and the like..Runs for building stamina

now the question is when i go out friday what do i run .could some one please point me in the right direction...

    Go Well.

    Mon Ami..

  • Quick update and Ill catch up properly later.

Wimped out of the cold outside run and went to the gym...10.31 miles on a treadmill is a really dumb thing to do!

Though it is both amazing and frustrating in equal measure when you clock it back to 0 because it cant handle 3 digits!

Also in the same category is the amount of people who attempt to out run you....i think i counted 7!

Mon Ami - first of all welcome and well done for getting back out there! 23.20 is a great time! quicker than me! image

I think the question is what is your goal? Faster, further? The main reason for not racing yourself all the time is the risk of injury. By mixing up your training it trains your muscles in a different way and can make you even faster.

The benefit of a long slow run is the increase in stamina and also it can double up as an "easy run" as you are used to going full tilt every time you leave the house.

As to what exactly you should do on your next run? Slow things down, see how you feel and have a think about what you want to achieve then come back here and we will bombard you with advice image

    2013 - 165.23

  • @backtobasics - agree with you on the outrunning ... If anything it makes me go longer and faster, until they're beaten into submission! Fair enough they would wipe the floor with me on the weight machines, but I take the outrunning seriously!

Today's run - 5k in 27.35 - @5.35am! ... Reminds me I have to go put my gym kit in the wash!
  • Its just a pity I don't see them outside, I would have looked a darn site more comfortable even after double the distance! image

  • Thanks for replying Back2Basics.

since i posted.. i;ve found a generic running plan for 5k beginers and will follow that , so as to get some sort of structure.....and try and get the "Newboyoutus" under controll.

    Go Well

    Mon Ami.

  • No probs Mon Ami! we are all very friendly in here feel free to ask as many questions as you need!

Treat your plan as a guideline as you sound to me like you are way past a beginners 5k and already have a great time.

The control bit is a good thing to learn but I for one am in no way Yoda on this subject! image I tend to run a very unstructured pattern at random speeds and distances just read over some of my posts and you will see what I mean ha ha ha! image

Well a small update after the dreadmill sesh, the back of my leg is still grumpy so its rest and stretch for me for a couple then say a 6 or so to test it next week

  • Grendel3Grendel3 ✭✭✭

Welcome Mon Ami, the schedule is the way forward as no one can go out and run as hard as possible everytime they go out - and don't let B2B fool you - with his vast knowledge of stuff, Yoda he is,

Had a good week this week despite the attempt to run bare foot for 65 minutes!!! calves have finally settled down and the blisters on the soles of my feet have gone now, so have managed to squeeze in 28 miles this week so far so should hit 40 plus again this week but will then start to cut back a bit before Braintree - may even take a couple of rest days each week -

    2013  406.82  - 400 done 1200 to go.

  • mmm rest you must Grendel or the dark side you might find! *cough cough* cor sorry about that think I had a frog in my throat! image

I think I need to start putting the small runs in again as just doing 2 long runs doesn't seem to be working out....thoughts?

  • Grendel3Grendel3 ✭✭✭

Some shorter runs would'nt hurt just to keep the muscles working - I really don't think you need to do to much in the way of speed work at the moment given your current goals.
