Radcliffe might not run again

RicFRicF ✭✭✭

See on the BBC news that Paula Radcliffe has said her foot is so bad that she might not run again.

The comments section has attracted an unusual amount of vitriolic postings.

Have I missed something?

  • Erm DF3 do you want to check who was in the British Women's marathon team for the Olympics?

Paula dropped out with enough time in advance for Freya Murray to replace her. Paula did not take up a space. Don't be so bang out of order to her.

Yeah sorry I was busy .......... I'll post something laterimage

Look the bottom line for my view on Paula is that at the end of the day, money pays the bills. She was bang out of order though for taking up a position in the last Olympics when she must have known that there was massive problems, so she took up a space someone else could have taken.

But lets face it, there is unlikely to be a white woman who will touch her times in the next 50 years.

Paula Radcliffe didn't deprive anybody of a place at London 2012 -  it went to Freya Murray when she pulled out.

Ok Screamapillar, I've already apologised for commenting on something in which I only know half the story ....... and trust me, if I had to do that all the time I would never have time to post anything but apologies!

I can't believe that someone so adept at trolling is seemingly unaware of the concept of the cross post image

BBC comments make it look a playground here sometimes! What nasty people!

Can't believe the comments on the BBC site. Who are these people? Just finished reading her autobiography and the number of injuries and painful treatments that woman has gone through, it's amazing she has ever completed a marathon, let alone ran a WR that has stood for 10 years. She deserves respect and I really hope she recovers soon.

lol, I knew it was a cross post, I was just saying it for effectimage

What effect were you trying to achieve? Something with glitter, glue and felt might have had more impact. And possibly something made from paper mache....

Nothing out of the ordinary in those comments.

Stupidly out of order and scummy obviously, but check out the average forum, twitter account or you tube video and you'll get the same. The net invites anonymous drones to safely slate public figures.

There's a chap on the sub 3hour thread who keeps slating Scott Overall for instance. He's only the best men's marathon runner we currently have, that's all.

At face value, you can't have anything but praise for Paula Radcliffe. Check out the top 10 women's marathons ever run

Noone has even got within 3mins of her time, 10years on!

    It's such a good record, it's amazing.

It's almost getting to the levels of the infamous Wang Junxia's times from 93 that noone has even got close to 20years on, and probably never will

SG - Radcliffe should be an inspiration to all us plodders .What she lacked in natural ability she made up for in sheer determination, application and hard work. I doubt that her world best will survive much longer, but viewed in the context of it's time it's a landmark performance.

.....on the other hand you need to get your head out of your arse re the Scott Overall comments, LD, who is the second funniest poster on the RW forum, after the legendary Moraghan is just having a laugh. Read his other post and smile!

Its easy to get a bee in your bonnet over some issue that no-one else appears to understand.

I was watching and have photos of Paula R from the National XC in 1990. So was aware of her existence a long time before she became public property.

In 1999 AW published a letter of mine (rather pompous it was) suggesting that Paula's training had risks attached and she needed to ease up.

She wasn't too happy about that assessment, but I felt I ought to mention it to be on the safe side.

I tend to take a dim view of those who champion training that effectively 'tests to destruction'.

i used to have the same view of Paula as i do about the England football team.  In the major competitions there was always hype about winning it but come the crunch she/they always fell short with a plucky loser story to justify exit.  there was no doubting her class but she just didnt do it enough in the major championships

Of course you then look at har achievements away from the championships and she lived upto to her hype and dominated.

She will be considered one of our best every female athletes and rightly so.

Fair enough on the 2nd part, but you think Radcliffe's records will go shortly? 2nd best recorded is almost 3mins away?

  • No great surprise that Radcliffe is hanging up her running shoes. That foot injury has been bothering her for ages and the surgery was pretty much a last throw of the dice. With or without it, she'd peaked a while back, so was unlikely to match her feats of 10 years ago now, at the age of 39.

As for the vitriol by the "commentators" on the BBC site, well the internet is full of fat losers, sat in their piss stained pants tapping away, ever-ready to vomit their hateful bile over any given subject, just desperate to be noticed. welcome to the Information Superhighway.

  • and i think it'll still be a few years before radcliffes world record goes. Isn't Mary Keitany off having a bairn?

Paula's WR marathon takes some thinking about.

An average mile pace of a shade under 5:10. That's the average.

Now if anyone wants to beat that record they can't afford to warm up and play safe for a few miles. Just a mile or two of 5:25's will put it out of reach.

A record of pure nerve. She just blasted the pace from the gun and ran out of road before she ran out of energy.

I think the last mile was calculated at 4:48!

    🙂

  • and how she ever ran so fast with that head wobbling all over the place like David Gray singing Babylon, I'll never know.

  • I think you should swap the "sweat" with "spunk".

  • From being an almost there, Paula moved to the marathon and set her miraculous almost 3 minutes faster record in 2002, she also had a very good 2003. Yet she had a terrible race in Athens 2004 and never really came back.

The furore over Lance Armstrong's EPO and blood doping rung a bell about time frames...I'll just leave this here....

"In 2004, a test for detection allogeneic/homologous blood transfusion doping was implemented".

    Link didn't work..
