Penistone/Oxspring Trunce 2012

Hi everyone,

I was hoping for some advice.  I am planning to run (or possibly crawl round) the first Trunce race of the season on Monday 26th March. It's the first time I've ever done it (in fact it will be my first ever running event of any kind) but I was wondering what shoes to wear as I don't own a pair of cross-country/fell shoes (and don't really want to buy any yet in case I really don't enjoy it!).

I have a pair of road runners (Brooks Adrenaline GTS). Alternatively, I have a pair of trail shoes from The North Face (called Hedgehog GTS). These are brand new (not worn outside even yet so not 'broken in') and I bought them as a walking shoe with no intention to run in them. However, looking online it seems they are designed for 'speed walking', but they are definitely much heavier and a bit bulkier than road/fell trainers.

Could anyone who has run route before could give me any advice?I know you run through a river at least once but I know nothing else about the terrain.

Should I sacrifice grip by going for the comfortable and light road runners, or brave the heavier and more cumbersome trail shoes?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Danielle

  • I would personally go for the Hedgehogs as i have some and they have the best souls.THe weight is outweighed by the stability of the Hedgeogs.

  • A chap won it wearing sandals a year or two ago. Pretty sure that is correct and this is NOT  a feeble, late April Fool`s effort. Remember seeing the YouTube.

  • Yes. Rob Little(I think) won the fancy dress round (last race  of series; number 9) in sandals, but he's bloody good!!!

Personally speaking I wear my Inov-8 Roc-Lite 315 for the races

On my first ever Trunce (2009, race 6). I wore a pair of road-shoes, but it had rained for a couple of days prior, so the Woods were horrendous, & I slithered throguh them

By the next round I'd bought some fell-shoes (Mizuno Wave-Harrier) & immediately knocked the best part of 5  minutes off my time, due to added confidence in the woods

Don't forget, you cross the River Don 3 times!!! - without a bridge
Try not to be tempted to used the stepping stones, unless it's bone-dry, as you'll possibly fall off them

Who gave you the idea, or have you just seen the YouTube clips

4miles/550 feet of ascent (including one that not many run all the way up)

Look at Richards site, you'll find some albums of various ones over the past few years

I'll (well....we will) be there (Ackworth Road-Runners) in various numbers throughout the series

Come up & speak to number 2497, I'll try to talk you 'through' the awkard parts

  • In addition;
It get's a bit wet at timesimage

Usually the deepest crossing (second. First & third are the same, but in opposite directions) is about knee depth - dependant on where you enter it, as there's a couple of depressions in the river bed

    1st; Saturday 13th July 'Thurlstone Chase' 4 miles/800 feet of ascent http://fellrunner.org.uk/races.php?id=2589

2nd; Sunday 14th July 'Broomhead Chase' 3.5 miles/820 feet of ascent (mostly in first mile or so, & bloody hard because of it!) http://fellrunner.org.uk/races.php?id=2411

    3rd; Monday 15th July 'Trunce' 6  http://fellrunner.org.uk/races.php?id=2407

I'll wager I don't get the £50 again (if there's another prize draw??) - which I immediately donated to the Woodhead Moutnain Rescue Team (Andy, the 'Trunce' organiser is a member)

  • Was a good race (1st one) on Monday evening, even if there was (quite surprisingly) some deepish snow on the farm-track!!

It was a good turnout too, with over 260 runners, not bad for a weekday evening race that's got barely any publicity (cost may have a lot to do with it??? @ £1.20)

Richard was taking photos again, by the 3rd river (on 'the back') crossing; http://www.flamingphotography.co.uk/portfolio303738.html

(I'm on page 5, if you want to know who to say "Hello" to)
