What really offends you?

Just thinking.

Some people were quite offended by the pic of the dong on the Atheism thread. I can't say it bothered me in the slightest. Then I got thinking what really offends me......I can but only think of one thing, when people behave inappropriately in front of my kids. thats the only time I have ever thought sod this I am going to kick off, albeit on a steam train going to Minehead lol.

Do you think women are more easily offended than men?

Do you think older people are easier to offend?

Do you think the internet generation are harder to offend? I mean I have seen some proper weird crazy stuff on the net and as of yet nothing has really bothered me image

    What's so offensive about dongs?

    http://www.virginmedia.com/images/08dong400x300.jpg

  • Lol quality especially 500000 of them?

Mick Philpott, very current. What mildly offends me is that we have paid for him and his kids for a long time now we will have to pay for him in prison. He will have a bum hole like a wizards sleeve after a feww weeks. Sorry does that offend? image

I didn't find the picture of the penis offensive on the other thread, but from the comments about it, it seemed at least one man did.

I think people with children seem to find stuff more offensive than those without, and to find things offensive that they would not have done BEFORE they had children.

  • I agree Wilkie, difference being I would have been the person being offensive before I had children lol

  • I don't find pictures of willies offensive, but it is a it childish to post them (look at me I done a bad fing!). I do object to people posting rude pictures though because I often browse the forums at work while waiting for stuff. Other people can see the screen and it makes me look well dodgy when a penis appears on the screen. In fact it has potential to get me into a fair bit of trouble, so on the whole I'd rather people didn't.

There are websites or fora I like to look at which I certainly wouldn't look at at work, but runners world is usually innocuous enough to while away the time waiting fr results or porters or whatever.
  • As to what I find offensive, rape jokes. Not funny, but worse than that, it is upsetting that some people find them so funny.

    Stop telling them then.

I'm rarely offended by jokes, posts, comments etc. But what Chloella says about people seeing your screen at work..its more childish than anything (ooohhh get me....)
Unnecessary swearing I find a bit grating, f-this and f-that all the time,
and I just dislike bad manners, poor timekeeping and unsocial behaviour but most right minded people do don't they? I'd hardly say that it offends me though.
Not sure I agree with Wilkie that I find things more offensive now that I have children, I still laugh and then think, hang on, should I be laughing....

You're not a real vicar, are you? I found the penile picture offensive in the sense that I think it was the wrong place for it. You see, context is important, and it's quite possible that people of a tender age log in here. There are sites where it wouldn't offend me but, er... wait, I've dug myself a hole here haven't I...

  • The people on the bus who have their mobile on speaker phone whilst having an argument with their significant other. Do they really think that we all want to listen to their domestic disputes?

People who use course language in front of children.

People who push a buggy whilst smoking, causing the child to breath in their smoke.

Most of the time I like to think that I am quite easy going, but sometimes anything and everything, because I am a bit of a grumpy old man.

Jokes - think I was only really offended by Frankie Boyle's comments regarding Jordan's son, what offends me is when young people swear and spit all the time oblivious to who is around, I pulled up two lads who were spitting and swearing as they came out of asda whilst an elderly woman was virtually hiding away from them.

It's nothing to them, just normal behaviour, scary to older people and offensive to me. I got a bit of stick but asked them how they would feel if someone behaved like that in front of their Mother or Grandmother, give them credit they may have slagged me off but they apologised to the old woman

I think, to be fair, that most people who behave that way realise the error of their ways if it's pointed out to them. Call me naive, but I think on a one-to-one basis you can coax the good out of people. Apart from psycho- and sociopaths, I think people tend to be 'bad' in groups more often than singly.

Nudity, gratuitous or otherwise I can take or leave but I do understand that my tolerance is not that of most other people and I would not deny others' their opinions. I abhor bestiality and child porn but strangely I have never viewed either. The simple notion is repugnant to me. Animals and children are so reliant on us for their care and wellbeing.

On the other hand I find violence in most instances gratuitous and objectionable. Strangely I find cowboys and indians as enjoyable now as I did when I was a boy though I never liked war films. I do find most violence nowadays mindless and graphic and I don't think bloody badly beaten, burned and dismembered bodies lends anything to drama. Surely it does not take much imagination to realise what happens.

What really gets to me though is when certain things are portrayed as being intelligent or intellectual and it you don't "get it" you are the one with the problem. Sometimes  such things gather such momentum to the point that people are afraid to shout "rubbish!".

  • i suppose it depends if i value the opinion of the person who is being offensive.

the average punter on RW/the bus? no. an elected politician/public figure? potentially yes.

People who pick up on grammatical and spelling issues on an internet forum are offensive. So here goes.   (I was going to ask if Rickster was offended by teachers - as they are the only ones who use course language in front of children - but Peter C got in there first.... so I'll pick on chloella instead image)

You just made me laugh.  I was going to say "Nice use of the word 'fora'"  - but then noticed that you'd used 'forums' earlier in the post.

It's not really a criticism, because I often get tangled up about using "correct" English - like fora, whom   etc.   Most of the time, I give in to modern usage - but it was funny to see someone else using the two alternatives in the same post.

At several points in your text you've used more than one space during punctuation, but I guess that would be childish to point out.

  • Darts being portrayed as a sport

  • I pick up on bad grammar/spelling only if it unintentionally makes something sound funny (course and coarse being mixed up - probably because Rickster was simply typing fast or on a fiddly phone or something - as an example) or if it pertains to the point being made by that person. As an obvious point, if they're bemoaning the state of grammar/education/discourse. Personally, by the way, I would always use forums and not fora, which sounds unbearably archaic.

  • I meant coarse, not course. Typo!

Not much offends me but I do think it is wrong to have a go at someone when they aren't in a position to be able to defend themselves or put their side of the story across.  I can think of a few instances where that has happened on her over the years.

Outside the forum?  As someone else says, it depends on the context.

People who force their views on me, especially religious views, but also political views.  That includes people on FB (who I am likely to defriend very quickly), people who knock on my door and people who stop you in the street.  I have nothing against active debate but I cannot abide being told how to live my life.

Nudity is only offensive when it has been intended to offend.  Same goes for bad jokes, some stories and articles in the media

  • Snot offends me.

    Whether it's being excavated manually - and disposed of or eaten;

    launched as an air strike / snot rocket;

or clinging like an alian to a child's upper lip. image
