Has me down as Technical Middle Class, saying I work in research, science and technical fields - nothing could be further from the truth. My combobulation has been totally dis'd.
It seems to ignore the fact that you can be economically poor, but socially and culturally rich, and vice versa.
not necessarily in terms of what result you get, as I haven't got that much money but come out as established middle class, I think because I went to university and have pretentious hobbies.
The survey does make an assumption about income and assets, which is broadly the more you have, the higher your class.
Its too simplistic. Its an average guess, that's all.
I read of the case of a pair of university lecturers who for seven years had supplemented their salaries by borrowing the same amount. They had life style aspirations. opera, theatre, art, fine wines and the better things in life. After they had spent their way through this little lot, the interest payments on their loans came to more than their combined take home pay. Assets zero. Bankrupt. Most indignant. they were. Entitled to these things surely. Their class demanded it.
Having a house in the south of England and some sort of pension (pretty much anyone who has been paying in for 20 years, and that includes anyone with a public sector pension) got me to Elite. Complete tosh.
"This is the wealthiest and most privileged group in the UK. According to the Great British Class Survey results, lots of people in this group:
Enjoy high cultural activities such as visiting museums and listening to classical music
Went to private school and elite universities
Socialise with people who do a wide variety of jobs"
It's been years since I visited a museum. I didn't attend a private school and never went to University. We seldom entertain at home, rather go to a restaurant to eat with friends.
Good for a laugh. I'm an HR consultant and my OH is an air conditioning technician. And although I do occasionally listen to classical, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool rock fan conditioned by growing up in the 60s.
Permenantly skint - no car, lap top, play station drink in cheap pubs ermmm but second from the top well if that is the case the UK really is in the shite

I thought given the questions about savings it was weird not to ask about age, which would surely make a difference.
I also thought it was funny that all of the professions you were asked if you knew socially are represented at my running club!

It has me as Established Middle Class. Probably more to do with who I know and what I do than wealth.
It seems to ignore the fact that you can be economically poor, but socially and culturally rich, and vice versa.
It wouldn't give me a category. It just said that I'm class.
Well I don't know any oiks and am often found at the Opera don't ya know.

ha ha ha, I'm "elite". What a load of bullshit
Look AG we can't help which class we were born into....you'll just have to suck it up and admit your posh

i'm economy class
I think you must have entered some kind of Irony test instead DF
It just came up with "stand in the corner of the class and where this hat with a D on" I guess it stands for dashing
it told me i was an old hippy !
LOL. OMG where did an Aussie hear that quaint ol' expression?
Certainly more interesting than the original classifications
It told me I'm technical middle class.
On the news last night this was explained as financially comfortable but socially and culturally impoverished.
If I had any friends I'd ask them what that meant.
It told me I'm Elite - but then you already knew that anyway....

Technical middle class. But I am socially and culturally comfortable but financially impoverished - how does that work?
Hilarious. I am "Elite" according to this survey.

I'm Elite too, working class really but I guess that's almost Elite these days
Yeah. This has nothing to do with class.
It's something more like "marketing segmentation".
Like Marx sort of said, there are only two classes: those who want and expect to govern, and those who want and expect to be governed.
The BBC and the media generally, being part of the former, love to distract us with stuff like this.
I am established middle calss
Apparently
