800/1500m prediction??

I have an 800m coming up in 2 weeks time and a few 1500m races approaching for the early season.

I would like to know where about's I am at this current time and what I could expect if I were to race an 800m / 1500m fresh now.

So here are some recent sessions:

Track - 20x 200m with 45 sec rec. - averaging 33.8 seconds

Trail - 6x 800m with 2 min. rec - averaging 2:33

Track - 15x 300m with 60 sec. rec. - averaging 51.1 seconds.

So what should I aim for next week's 800m and where about's am I in terms of 1500m?

callum, im hitting sessions like that and will run my first 800m in nearly 25 yrs so im interested in your replies, as i havent a strong idea of what to aim at myself.

however if you have a recent PB in another distance you could use this tool to estimate a time http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/

there is also this training session for estimating http://www.brianmac.co.uk/kosmin.htm

At a guess i would say sub 2.10 maybe closer to 2.02.

  • I'm guessing from personal workouts too, looks to me like sub 4:50 mile shape and I'm guessing you're more of a middle distance specialist than a distance runner.

    1500 - 4:23

    800  - 2:07

Maybe a few seconds quicker in a perfect race.

  • This caught my eye as was wondering the same and similar to Dean had not raced 800m for over 20 years!

Using the McMillan calculator, it suggested 2:14 off my 5k time for this year.

Didn't train specific for the 800m but tested my fitness with 4 x 800m + 2 x 400m with 3 min recoveries on the Monday just gone and finished the 800s in 2:34 average and 400s in 1:05.

Finished the race tonight in 2:06 so was considerably lower then the calculator suggested off my 5k time but guess that comes down to genetic make up and level of endurance/stamina training.

thats a great time darren.  i think i could hold that session with those recoveries so that gives some room for thought.  congrats

All very interesting, as the interval session times from the OP are similar to what I'd expect to do, but I've got a clear LD bias.  So my 5,000m PB (15:55), according to McMillan, would equate to 2:03 and 4:14, but my stomach's turning just thinking about those times!!  I've never raced 800m, and my 1500m PB is a pitiful 4:36 (horrible fade in the last lap in 76 as my legs seized up!)  I'll probably continue to avoid 800m but wouldn't mind getting the 1500 down to 4:25 or so, with some sharper interval sessions inside me over the summer.  If you forced me to do the 800 I might puke my way round in about 2:12?

dont say that phil...we have very similar PBs and age and im hoping to go under 2.10   So how about for my motivation you agree that 2.05 is your predicted time image

image Agreed!  Who knows, I might get called up for one in the Southern League this year, if none of our sub-2 young 'uns are available.  As soft PBs go, it won't be any worse than my shot put!

  • Thanks Dean. I would have thought you're close to sub 2 going off your 5k time?

Phil - I'm totally the opposite; I find the shorter races and reps a lot more palatable than the longer stuff. My 5k and 10k times are way off where the calculator suggests they could be off my recent 800m time so the challenge in the next year or so is to bring them down to where they could potentially be. It will be interesting to see whether this is possible with the right training over time or whether the outcome is that I'm just suited better to shorter stuff.

Dean - When's your 800m race and do you intend to train specifically for it?

I'm training specifically for 5k until end of May but all summer the plan is to train specifically for 800. I have no idea what session the coach has planned but I think it will be high intensity and low reps. Race wise I have some 800s planned in the vets league plus trafford Grand Prix
