Embarrassing bouncing when running

Hi all,

I created an account just to ask this question because I can't find serious answers anywhere on the internet.

I've fairly new to running and when I started I noticed that if I looked down I could see a bulge in my shorts jiggling about a bit.  It was particularly obvious when it was windy because the shorts pressed against me.  I thought it might be because I didn't have proper running shorts so I bought running shorts with a liner recently and have been wearing those without any underwear.  But if anything it is more obvious now!

I haven't really noticed any strange looks so perhaps I'm over-thinking it and it just looks obvious from my point of view.  Or is this normal and I'll just get over the embarrasment?  Would I be better off wearing tight boxers under the shorts even though they have a liner?  Does anyone else experience this?

Can I have some serious replies please!  Thanks a lot.

I don't know because I am a girl, but I can pay close attention to all the chaps at my running club tonight and report back. It is quite windy today so that should help.

  • are you a female sam or a male sam.....makes a difference to the answers

  • Thank you very much image  I appreciate the awkward position you are putting yourself in!

  • Oh sorry, I am male... hence the bulge in my shorts!

Get some lycra undercrackers and wear them under normal running shorts, they should hold you in.

  • If you are from Yorkshire: just leave your ferret at home.

If you are from Scotland: take your sporran off before running

If you are from Fulchester: Buy a whellbarrow.

Otherwise; Get some tighter underpants. If this doesn't help, stop running and merely bask in the warm afterglow that realising you have an uncontrollably large member will give you.

...unlike that bloke up there in the pic.  Either he's been airbrushed, tucked it up his crack, or he's got as much genitalia as Morph.

  • Loads of blokes at my running club wear running leggings with shorts on top - I wonder if that's for the same problem you have?!

I too will also have a bulge inspection next time I'm at club obviously just to help you out Sam!
  • Are you embarrassed because it's a big bulge or because it's a little bulge?

  • Wow, thanks for all the replies!

Didn't really want to go into the details of the bulge but... it's not because I have a massive member!  When I do exercise and it's cold, my penis kind of shrinks and stiffens a bit (not at all in a hard-on sort of way) so its position behind my shorts becomes more obvious.

I'm not embarrassed about the size of the bulge, just that there is a visible bulge!  To be honest I don't care if I'm jogging past someone I don't know but I'd be self-concious if I joined a running club or something.

But I think I will try the lycra, thanks.

I won't be able to pass a male runner again without checking for bulgesimage

    Maybe we need a picture!

Oh, okay, can we just clarify what I'm looking out for in particular? I thought it was the jiggling that was the issue, but is it more the fact that the bulge is noticeable at all? Or is it a combination of both?

  • Ha sorry, combination of both!

Surely it would be bit weird if you didn't have a bulge? I run with 3 male colleagues this lunch time but didn't take notice of any jiggling.

image.........thanks so much for joining Sam, your thread has brightened up my day image.I,d go for the base layer tight lycra cycle short with running shorts on top combo.

Just stick with the shorts if someone wants to look so what. At a HM last year passing a water station I did overhear one lady volunteer comment to her friend adding it was a highlight of the day ogling all the jiggly bits.
If you join a running club or do races you'll see guys in a lot worse ie short shorts so they're almost hanging in the breeze

Okay, I am back. Here is my report:

The sample was about 10 male runners aged between 35 and 65. Legwear choices ranged from winter tights to racing shorts, though the most popular option was loose-fitting mid-thigh-length shorts. One runner had lycra shorts under these, as suggested by Roeby. My initial hypothesis was that these shorts and the tights were most likely to minimise jiggling, whereas I suspected the lighter racing shorts might make it more obvious.

    Prominence of bulge
Taking my club as a random sample, I can report that bulge size and varied between, er, members. However, none of them were strikingly noticeable, and none stood out as looking unusual in any way.

    Bouncing/Jiggling
As I'm sure you can imagine, I was keen to get on the move. I was on an errand of mercy, after all, plus I now had a hypothesis to test. What I noticed was this: you could not notice any jiggling irrespective of the choice of legwear.

    Conclusion
I don't think you need to worry, as jiggling does not appear obvious to other people, even ones who are really looking. Unless you are the only male jiggler, in which case, you probably do need tighter underpants.

    Hope this helps.

  • Literatin, I have to say I admire your dedication to this particular piece of research - must have been tough for you! image

  • mikasamikasa ✭✭✭

Yes, very enlightening Literatin. I'll have a proper look on Friday though I think the guys are wearing winter running tights so don't think there'll be too much jiggling. Did you manage to do it without anyone noticing Literatin? I mean usually you're running in the same direction so trying to oggle some groins might be noticable?

  • I had similar trouble Sam.  I've taken to popping a viagra before I go out and then strapping the erect member to my chest using my heart rate monitor strap.

  • Either that, or do without the Viagra and tuck it into your sock (assuming you're wearing tights obviously)
  • I like to knock the heads off daffodils as I run.
  • Johhny I have been LOLing at that one for the last 5 minutes! image

  • Thank you literatin, made me laugh image  I'm pretty sure my jiggling is noticeable though, so I'm going to start wearing something under my running shorts - either lycra or tight boxers.

    Thanks for the support everyone!

I don't think anyone noticed, Mikasa, as I ran ahead of them and turned back for a discreet ogle under the guise of someone making conversation about the weather. However, there was an element of karmic retribution when they all got quite a good view of my arse, as I was wearing race shorts with a side split and it was really quite windy out.

  • I think the jiggling is more noticeable to you because you are stationary in relation to the bit that is jiggling, whereas to the onlooker the whole of you is jiggling so the fact that some bits are jiggling more than others is not so obvious.  Also of course you are looking down and seeng it in silhouette which will make movement more obvious.

But then there are the jokes about Linford Christie, so some bulges obviously do attract comment.

And recently someone posted a link to a picture of a bloke in a triathlon with a jaw-dropping "front wedgy" but I can't remember where now.

  • I remember the drugs issue with Linford Christie and the judge in the case had to be told what his 'lunch box' was as it was termed in those days!!   image

None of the blokes in my club resembled Linford Christie.

I'm not looking at that picture again, Mad4morris. *shudders*
