MM: lots of hummng birds and quail in the garden, and a few cayotes too. Plenties of bunnies, and if you are really, really lucky, you may get to see the fabled NM Jackalope

YM - he is getting better - thank you.  We are off to Nashville shortly to see him.

TrevO - The photos aren't downloaded - I had to buy mine image

  • DLR - I have been trying to look at transport links today already, but I am some what confused as to how to get to the start from our place??? Doesn't help that I canna see the stops on the metro map and I couldn't get the site translated??? Best tip I can give is to learn some German!! I struggled sooooooo much when there with the language barrier and my accent!!

  • The expo is still in the same place..........I will need to get oot my old notes!!!

As a total 'scaredy pants' I will happily take photographs of the balloons. From the ground....

Damn right.  Me and heights don't mix.

The pursuit for a Berlin place continues...

No luck with the charidees yet?

Kaz - I've just downloaded a German phrases audio book.

  • Kaz, honey, big hug. Like you, I can hear 50 good things and one slightly negative one and focus solely on the negative.

Like the awful woman who commented to a friend of mine that, 'she (my friend) has the face, and Maus (obviously she used my real name!) has the body'. This insults both of us on so many levels and makes me absolutely furious on behalf of my friend. Yet it's the thing I can't forget.
  • If you need any help deciphering German, I may be able to assist. But I believe Our Emmy may also be quite the Teutonic Tongue too.

    Video update: -

I've got 47 out of 70 finishers added so far - I'm on the homestretch.

  • Orbutt: this is an endurance event in itself. Do you have an 'O' count yet?
  • I am planning on starting to learn basic German once I have finished present course..........both would be far tooooo much for my tiny brain!!!image

I have now sorted the transport link I needed which is now quite simple! Last time I stayed on the direct line so knew where to go.

Good luck with the find a place Maus!image I know exactly how you feel, but you have no need to worry.

Looking ahead to Berlin, as there's a few of us running, could the Berlin veterans (Kaz, TD, Eggy et al) have a think about any tips they could share? practical stuff that it's helpful to know if you've not been there before.

Main thing is to turn up with your running kit and run your socks off. The rest is details mate.  I've been there twice (2011/2012), it was like that both times.

Actually, pretty perfect would be Balloon Fiesta and NM exploration first week or so of October, followed by the Albuquerque Marathon (basically flat but at 5 000 ft elevation) along the Rio Grande River the following weekend.

That way, we can all be taper mad while flying balloons, and carb loading on NM food. Sounds about ideal to me.

STOP!!  Enough!  You had me at "House in NM"...

As it's my wedding anniversary on Thursday I plan to use it to my advantage...Mr Maj will be such a happy man that he'll agree to anything image

Dannir - I think you can count me in for some of that Autumn 2014.  Sounds terrific. Unfortunately, as Mrs TD is a school teacher, she has loads of holidays but no flexibility when to take them. Only one week off after we hit Sept, right at the end of Oct/ begin Nov. But she did indicate maybe I could go solo on this trip. image

Yer_Maj I think that was a similar situation to how BOTH our children were conceived. Me pinned down by the shoulders with a grin on my face...

Looking ahead to Berlin, as there's a few of us running, could the Berlin veterans (Kaz, TD, Eggy et al) have a think about any tips they could share?  I'm thinking along the lines of ATM's Paris notes covering things like:

    • transport on the day
    • Expo
    • Bag storage
    • feed stations
    • toilets
    • course
    • support

The practical stuff that it's helpful to know if you've not been there before.

Transport: Easy for Berlin, just take the nearest U-Bahn or S-Bahn to the start. There seemed to be plenty of trains that day and I had no issues at all getting from Mitte down to the start area.

Expo: My only real tip for that is to remember if you pre-ordered a t-shirt or not when you entered the race. If you did there is a paper token attached to your race bib when you collect that you need to tear off and had into a desk next to the bib collections to get your t-shirt.

Toilets: Better than Paris. Far more of them in the start area and a handy wooded area for men or ladies not wanting to wait in queues.

Course: Very flat (almost Amsteram flat) with the most interesting sections being the opening few miles and final mile. The finish is very special. I found the it got crowded a bit between miles 2 - 6, but faster runners might avoid that.

Support: I'd say similiar to Paris levels of support on the course.

  • Any doctors in the house?  Middle child just announced a classmate has TB .... checked son's vaccinations and looks like he is up to date but any advice welcome.  Off to search online ....

  • Dannirr..  an Autumn 2014 thread outing sounds like a great plan...  image

I think I've seen that film.  Strange plot, something about a photocopier that was 'kapput'.  Only watched the first 10 minutes.

Quite.  You're a beautiful girl - Mr Maj had plenty to say when he saw a pic of you on Sunday.  And you're a darling with it.  Technically, we should hate you  image

  • Yeah MM, you are foxy no doubt. The person who said that stupid thing must be massively insecure

A wee story from Sunday that I've been meaning to tell you:

After we had set up camp at mile 11 and poured our first nip of rum (it was, after all, 9.45 am), we noticed an old man on the other side of the road waving us over.  We sent Jim over as he was designated Head of International Relations.  They had a chat, Jim came back and said "He wants to speak to The Welsh".

We'd already been told off by the marshall for over vigorous unfurling of The Pole ("You runners are always the worst") so I ran across the road expecting to be court marshalled at any moment.

The man was very old - he checked I was Welsh - I explained I lived in Cardiff and my Mum's family are from West Wales, then he started telling me about how he was evacuated to St Clear's during WW2.  This, amazingly, is where my Mum grew up!  We chatted a bit and he told me how he and some of the other evacuees had gone back to St Clear's some years ago and given a thank you plaque to the residents.  He'd taken lots of photos which he was showing me.

Then he gave me the photo album to keep - he was quite insistent that I was to have it and keep it.  Maybe he has nobody else to give it to, maybe it's because Mum was from the same town, maybe I was just there at the right time, who knows.  But I still have a warm glow from the encounter and I'll take very good care of those photos image

Lawyer - guilty as charged. But not a "criminal" lawyer in the normal sense. I specialise as a legislative drafter, and have in the past few years been drafting laws about criminal justice frameworks/policing/transnational crime. I'm in more of a general drafting role at the moment, but just so happen to be doing some criminal law work here on the Island.
