I want to get one of these too but only use an iPad as my home computer. Done some quick research and can't find any clear information as to whether the software can be installed and data transfer can take place without the USB stick. Anyone know?
I cannot think how that would work. The watch requires the USB ANT+ stick for data transfer, your ipad cannot talk the ANT+ wireless protocol. The garmin knowledgebase says the ipad is not "compatible with Garmin products, such as map updates or fitness device software".

Ive just received my Garmin 410 and taking it out the box as we speak ! My only question is can calories be counted using the wrist strap on the watch instead of the heart monitor strap ? Ive recieved conflicting information regarding this. Can any one help please?

you need HR data for accurate calculation. If you only wear GPS unit it will give an approximate value.
