Hello. I am working with Ordnance Survey on a research project they are carrying out into how people plan, carry out and record their outdoors activities, including running. There is a survey here where you can share your thoughts and everyone who enters will be in with a chance of winning one of three £100 vouchers for their favourite outdoor retailer: bit.ly/outdoors-2013
I would like to emphasise that this is not a sales push disguised as a survey - Ordnance Survey are simply trying to find out how people use maps, whether that is paper or digital, so your answers will not result in a shower of spam!

Just turning the link into a link. Always cool to help with the OS

Done
Done, but very irritating
Yes, it was a bit.
It needed a way of asking how you actually use maps. I map a route on Google and memorise it, what I need most is to identify a turn point when running out and back. It isn't always easy either on map or an image - especially on a canal towpath.
I was doing it, but it was really long so I gave up. Also, 'other, please specify' with no space to do so?
Oh and crags only has 1 x G !
Hi Simon - some feedback ...
Started and gave up the survey .. first failure : Please select the 5 most important factors for you from the left-hand column
What if only 1 or 2 of the listed factors have the slightest importance for me, and none of my real reasons are listed?
I also found an 'other, please specify' option that didn't give me the chance to specify anything.
Also no mention in th first question of water activities. I use OS maps to find safe rivers to swim in, access to them and local facilities such as public toilets and pubs.
Thanks to all who have posted comments here.
I'm coordinating the survey, and have taken your views onboard.
- I have added comments boxes for each question in the survey, so you can have just more space to give your own views and experiences
- Crags spelling corrected!
There's only so much we can do here, given the structure of the survey (sorry it's long, but so many issues to explore!). But I hope the changes made help, and shows that we listened!
Hi Rick,
I think you should also add some sort of 'don't care' or 'not applicable' option for the paired questions. It's not clear what to do if the question doesn't interest you - put 0 for not important? put 5 for neutral? And if it's not important to you you probably don't know how easy or difficult the information is to find.
I appreciate that this has not much to do with out door pursuits, though it does in many ways.
I'm looking to purchase some land. I use maps to work out the 'best' route (best for me) to each prospective plot. I use the map to work out what the plot has to offer - hilly or flat, water source, ease of access and numerous other issues. I use OS maps along side google earth to get a feel for the land that I'm looking at. I also use maps to see what paths / trackjs etc exist on the land, where any public access is etc.
Like Carmen, looking at rivers is important, it would be good to know depth and width of rivers and lakes.
I have also found that deep ghylls, ditches, gullies are missed so the overall terrain may look flat but there are big holes (around here a lot of bomb crators), that are not evident from looking at maps.
Can I have a 3D holograph please.
Sorry but I haven't got the rest of my fucking life to fill this in.
Two minutes max or piss off.
Waste of time.
🙂
Haha, that's what I thought when I saw I'd only done 17%!
At-a-girl
We're on the same wavelength
🙂
I tried, but it said "the maximum number of responses has been met" Oh well
