Hi All,
I was out on a long run yesterday and 4 miles in something bit or stung me just above the ankle line. My whole ankle and inside of foot is now enormously swollen and the lower to middle part of lower leg.
I am not too concerned by that as I have a history of ridiculous over the top reactions to such things and this happens to me at least once a year.
My concern is, how do I manage it so it heals quickly. I have the birmingham half sunday, which is my A race for the year. I had planned anyway to do a final run tonight then just rest, however running will not be possible right now. Was thinking of doing a spin class, however i am concerned it might do more harm than good.
Given there is no muscle or tissue damage do the usual rules of RICE still hold relevance with this? I have been taking piriting and ibruprofen since yesterday also.
I am not sure whether i should try and keep it mobile given its not an actual injury or just keep it rested.
Anyone got any bright ideas as to how I can manage this in a 5 day turn around?

Yes, the usual applies.
I have bad reactions to bites sometimes too and icing it is probably the single best thing you can do - as often as posssible.
Thanks. just been tyo tesco and bought the cheapest frozed bag of veg I could find. Not easy to sit and ice in work though.
On a plus point (assuming it heals in 5 days), its forcing me to completely rest and taper!
runner beans?
sliced green beans, 85p.
But you ankle has swollen GIGANTICCALLY. Surely you need to see the doctor.
Though, yes, runner beans would have been far more appropriate and arguably worth the extra 5p purely for the pun
If you need antobiotics best take them now
It happens at least once every summer/autumn. I used to panic but after many visits to the dr and being told 'its just a nsty reaction, give it a few days', i dont bother now.
Though, you do make a good point re antibiotics if i do need them best get them in now so i can process them and get past the dodgy tummy stage i always have.
I do like that word (Gigantically) though on this occassion i must confess it is possibly a slight exaggeration. However, I wanted to get over the fact that it wasn't merely moderately swollen and I was being a wuss!
Get antibiotics asap DT19, I was stung by a hornet on my ankle on holiday (god, that ******* hurt too) & couldn't get my shoe on the next day, my whole lower leg was swollen to the knee. Quick trip to the docs & got antibiotics & antihistamine & it was going down fast within 24 hours.
Ended up at go. He said there was no apparent infection as skin not hot or red enough and developed too quick. Said it was an allergic reaction. He advised it would clear on own in a week but has given me some high strength antihistamines to blast it in next 48 hours.
Fingers crossed it won't upset Sundays.
Keep it elevated too.
Definitely rest!
I had a really bad horsefly bite inAugust - my whole arm swelled up massively!
It wasn't infected. Fexofenadine helped a lot and it settled in about 5 days...
You will be pleased to know Nick that following the first round of tabs I have significantly improved and but for resting up for sundays half, I would be doing a 50 miler tonight!!
