I was watching TT Closer to the Edge last night, about the Island of Man superbike racing they do. The mentality, why they do it, the thrill of victory. It was a great film, and i have never been into bikes, apart from watching Barry Sheen when i was a kid.
It made me think though, has there any films about running, like decent documentaries? I think it would be good to do if they havent. You try to explain to people why you go out in all weathers, climb up the hills we do, fighting through the injuries, waiting to be fit enough to do it again. The discipline takes to do what we do sometimes.

funnily enough i watched that the night before last! Guy Martin just cracks me up, he is a nutter!
can't think of any good films about runners, but here is a link to the eurosport coverage of the 2011 UTMB - I was watching it recently - its certainly inspiring! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhgiUvMrV9k
When i saw it, i thought this guy cant be real. Must be some actor hamming it up, but Guy Martin. The bloke is a nutter totally, but one i wouldnt mind going out for a pint with.
Thanks for the link. Documentaries interest me more than actual films. It was kind of like the one on Senna.
I missed a documentary on Channel 4 some time back - it is no longer available on 4oD, but I think it is available on DVD. Story of a guy going from 16 Stone, attempting to become an International Marathon runner. I would love to see this.
Alex Vero - 'Running to the Limits'

If you watch it and it is any good, let me know.
I can second Alex Vero's DVD. Very interesting.
Marathon Man!
Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier, and a nasty dental drill

(sorry, diverted away from running a bit!)
Be careful who you're calling a nutter - that's somebodies future husband (Though I must at that at the time of filming 2009/2010 we were just friends hence the sha****g and Wan***g comments!!!)
Totally agree about documentaries being more interesting. A bit like autobiographies being more interesting than fiction. Since Chariots of Fire have there been any running films at all???
Are you really? cool!
obviously i meant nutter as a compliment
I was going to say he's very sexy too but i won't now. . . . .

Man on a Mission is an interesting documenary. Eamon Coghlan goes to Iten in Kenya to meet Brother Colm O'Connell, the irish missionary who has become a trainer of some of the top Kenyan athletes, including David Rudisha.
It was available on the Athletics Weekly site but seems to have disappeared. It was on Setanta Ireland here in Ireland several times over the last few weeks and months. I would guess that it will be repeated at some stage.
Rare...got my copy from eBay but worth looking out for.
The trailer, linked above, looks really good.
Unbreakable The Western States 100
You can see some clips and order the DVD (from USA) from here Unbreakable. I haven't seen it but it looks good.
'Without Limits' The story of Steve Prefontaine.
Not a documentary, but a brilliant lecture from the ultra runner Michael Arnstein. He talks about the importance of sleep, running on and empty stomach, salt, gear, motivation and his no taper method.
Worth looking at if you are looked too or are doing longer distances.

Running on the Sun is an excellent DVD about the Badwater Ultra - NOT for the squeemish though, with the shot of a finishers feet
Athlete - pretty good doc following triathletes and marathon runners training for Ironman and Boston/New York marathons.
UltraMarathon Man - follows Dean Karnazes on his 50 states, 50 marathons in 50 days quest.
Living is Winning is a great documentary about a guy who recovers from cancer and signs up to do Ironman Lake Placid.
What It Takes - follows a few elite Ironman athletes in their quest for the world championship.
All US imports.
Check out http://www.runningmovies.com/ which lists ALL the dvds/films about running produced over the years, a fascinating website.
16 Days of Glory Official Film of 1984 Los Angeles Olympics has some intetesting runners such as David Moorcroft on it.Its on youtube andgreat watching. If you're an 80s athletics fan like me
Just watched the UTMB link, OMG. you do a couple of marathons and think your the dogs dangles. When you have done something like that you know you have achieved. Up most respect to all ultra runners. Truly inspirational
