  • Hi all,

i just signed up to run and also just found this forum.  I'm in Darwin, Australia and am a little nervous image.   i have started a 15 week program today and my biggest hurdle is going to be my 4 week Europe vacation just before the marathon.   I am hoping to get all my runs in so will be planning our itinerary with military precision.  We fly from Paris to Malaysia the day after the run so I hope Im able to walk. At present I run 4 x 5km runs a week and one longer run (up to 15km) on Sundays. I'm looking forward to the training and challenge.    I did read it was only 2 degrees in Paris last year so will find the weather interesting after the heat here.

    Any Aussies on here?

Rach - Welcome to the forum and well done for signing up! We have a few aussies on the thread. JusT and Charlie and we have an adopted our own Australian with Maus!

What's your backgroudn like? Is this your first marathon? What training plan are you following? Where are you planning to go for your holiday?

The weather last year was lovely. The issue with April in Europe is that it can be very cold but also blindingly hot!

Same day as South Downs Marathon image

  • Emmy -  it is my first marathon. image. I did a 1/2 back in 2004 pre-babies and loved it.  I am following a training plan that a friend who has done a few ironmans gave me.   I do park run each Saturday which i love too.  I did a few 10km runs  this year and going to also do 2 x 1/2 marathons next year on top of Paris.

We are doing london, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland and France.  image

  • Hi sorry for butting in but I've had an email from Fizziofinn  asking for money to settle a hotel bill I'm guessing she has been hacked. I know many of you know her and wondered if any of you can shed any light on it?

  • E mmyE mmy ✭✭✭

Woody - not a problem. ATM may be able to contact Finn to ask her.

Rach - What sort of time are you hoping for? Do you have a half lined up during your training? It sounds like you'll have a great holiday whilst you're over!

  • Cheers Emmy I've just messaged ATM

I'd love to help you out Phillip but I'm skint image

the hills are alive, in the race of Shrewsbury ......

    OK!

Apartment paid for, eurostar booked, medical certificate signed and stamped!

So......, just the small matter of marathon training (gulp). I need to go long-ish this week, 32 miles last week but no double figures which is kind of bad for me.

Emmy - I'm in for Jantastic image

One question - what is it? image

  • Philip - You'll find plenty of folk arriving both days. The only real caution with arriving on the Saturday is to ensure you arrive in plenty of time to get to the Expo to collect your race number.

  • E mmyE mmy ✭✭✭

Phillip - I think it depends on what you prefer. The expo is normally quieter on Friday. I arrive on Saturday because of my work and i can only travel on weekends but I know a lot of people arrive on Thursday/Friday.

    *raises hand*

Although I live in Scotland now, so if it's 1C again at the start next year I should be a bit better acclimated for it...  Couldn't get much more different than Darwin!  Hat and gloves that you can chuck during the race might be on the shopping list before April 6 then?

No worries Emmy, I'm likely to be back out in the new year, so we can maybe sort something out then! Enjoy your Christmas party!!

only question would be any areas not to run in Brussels... is Schuman area reasonable for after dark (early evening not late night)?

Hi Jo - I think your best bet is to do laps of Parc Cinquentenaire (in Dutch, Jubelpark). From Schuman area you head East, back up Avenue des Arts (I think) and you are really right by the park in a few hundred metres. There are lots of internal paths or you can run on pavements all the way round the outside fence. I'd reckon it's about 3kms round the perimeter and there's usually quite a few jogging types about.

I live about 20 mins drive out of the city (but horrible traffic jams when it's rush hours) so tend to do all my running in forests. And as I'm only likely to start running tmrw for the first time in 6 weeks, I'm not a good bet for going with someone else. Just don't know what I can do.

  • Thanks TD always good to have the insider tips for new locations! as mentioned I'm due back in Brussels in January, so maybe catch-up with you guys then (avoiding rush-hour times)

Enjoy your first run, I hope the knees behave themselvesimage

  • E mmyE mmy ✭✭✭

Jo - when are you around in Jan? We can already try to put something in the calendar for a run and dinner?

  • Sounds like everyone is doing really well with their early training!

Danirr-- Sorry, you had to spend a waste a perfectly good evening by spending it with lawyers.  I need quite a bit of alcohol to get through those parties!

  • Hey Em - sadly, back on Isle of Maus this morning. But. This was hopefully my second last commute between here and Brussels. Plans are afoot for permanent relocation at the end of January.

Hi Rach! Welcome! Plenty of distant travellers lurking here. As well as the freshly-outed HomeBrew, we have me living for the moment on the Isle of Maus (but the locals insist on calling it the Isle of Man image), an Australian who lives in NZ, a New Zealander who lives in London and a UK-er who lives in Australia. Confused? Go with it! Wait until you start to figure out how the Caledonian Massive works!

You're going to have a blast. Ask any questions you may have - I travelled over from Australia for Paris 2012 and JusT did it for Paris 2013, but there is a wealth of information here for the travelling marathoner from the many members who travel from far and wide to get to this marathon. Or would you prefer to be a marathoning traveller?

Day 1 of 16-week training program. My legs haven't got the memo about that yet...

  • Feels good to be back into a training programme image, we're on our way.

  • ATMATM ✭✭✭

    Quick  hello...

The mail from Finn is a scam. Her account's been hacked. She's not penniless in Amsterdam! * you cam , however, send ME loadsamoney anytime you like...*

Hi, Rachel...and anyone else I've missed.

Just registering for Jantastic image   Everyone in?

  • I think FizzioFinn's PC has had viruses on it for at least 4 years now. image

OR, she's had another virus incident after she had one 4 years ago and I have had no contact with her in between times. Shame on me. This is Day 1 of my 16 week training programme for Paris too. I might do some cycling.

  • Emmy I'm in Brussels from 13-15th Jan, I have a works dinner on the 13th, so far 14th is free (and not sure if I'm traveling back on the 15th or 16th, depends on timings) - are you about then?

  • Jingle Jo - in my experience the main hazard of running in Brussels is the cars that shoot out from underground car parks and straight across the pavement. Other than that, as safe as any other big city.

Day 1 of my 24 week spring training plan has involved more Quality Street than strictly necessary.

  • Exactly how many Quality Street constitute Strictly Necessary?

  • Double figures = bad image
