Right oh wise ones. Heres a strange question for you.
I usually bung my running gear in with the usual washing loads, 30 degress. After all, there's little mud, just a bit sweaty. But I've noticed that even right after washing and hanging to dry, they still have a bit of an odour.
What I want to do is try washing the running kit separately, on a Synthetic cycle. But Equally I don't want to ruin all my gear by experimenting too much.
Anyone have an opinion on what settings are most effective whilst not shrinking or ruining the gear?

Don't leave your gear for days on end before you wash it. I try to wash mine within 24 hours. Give them a spray with a pre wash if you are not washing straight away. 30c doesn't clean that well and 40c won't harm your gear. Use a bio wash(effective for washes up to 40c)
soaking in Miltons before washing is supposed to be useful
Apparently softener leaves a deposit on the fabric, which then tends to accumulate odour.
I put my stuff through on the acrylics cycle, 40 degrees. No prewash or fabric softener or anything like that. Never had a problem. It goes in absolutely minging after up to a week in the snake basket and comes out fine.
Admit it. You've already checked to see if there's an app for this problem.
🙂
I tend to wash mine separately, but at 30 degrees. A scoop of Vanish powder seems to help to prevent smells coming back too.
Ha! Not yet.
Grinchy - That would be my preferred solution but isn't practical.
Not using softener seems to be a common trend. That makes some sense to me. So I'll try the acrylics cycle at 40 degrees, without softener.
Will report back and hunt you all down for compensation if it all goes horribly wrong.
my solution was to give her it back until she washed it properly.
Was her solution to get the locks changed?
Ha - quite funny that Skotty!
Think you touched a nerve with Screama though...
not at all. she does a good job now.
and I think she appreciated the new washing machine for christmas.

Husband reckons it helps - I use gear that never really smells (lululemon tops)
nice of you to give your Mum a washing machine
Excellent riposte
PS: Come on Ben, can we get rid of these annoying Christmas smileys now?
Just 40 deg bunged in with everything else - but then again, I don't smell.
I do smell and do the same never noticed a issue but this might explain why I can always find a seat on the tram.
Matty
i had the same questions a while back and got some good replies...

hope this helps.
within 2 mins of the run start...one tends to be sweaty anyway...so i tend to just dismiss the fact that there was a minor residual odour when I put the kit on.
I don't sweat because I am a lady. But as mentioned on the other thread, I stick a scoop of napisan in with my normal detergent and that does the job (and is cheap). I only do laundry about once a week so the week's worth of kit goes in with everything else with no problem.
I use a sports wash from Sainsburys on a 40 degree baby clothes wash cycle. i only wash the gym/run gear together. I find that normal tablets don't get the sweat out. My compression gear has been fine so far and kept its shape etc.
Halo - sports wash that you can buy in the supermarket. I love it. Prior to using it I'd sometimes find that my kit still felt whiffy, and would notice it if dried indoors. Wash at 30C and it's grand now, even after a couple do days in the wash basket.

Another vote for halo sports wash and if you can't get it (never could where I used to live) then Ariel hygiene also works. I found some of my stuff had an odd sweet sort of smell which is probably bacteria and sweat related. It wasn't horrible just not right.
Halo worked well for me, but my local Sainsburys and Tescos stopped stocking it for a while. Hence I have switched to Dettol laundry cleanser which just goes in the softener compartment along wit have normal detergent. Basically you just need something to kill the pesky bacteria that cause the smells in the first place, which is probably why napisan works as well.
Just run fast and the smell will be blown away as the air rushes past you.
I ran behind a parkrunner lady once who I can only say smelt of meat. I made sure I was in front of her from then on.
Perhaps she'd come straight form the abattoir?
I find the technical fabrics have a certain whiff to them full stop, no matter what they're washed in. I wash mine all together (apart from the white ones) and definitely NO fabric conditioner as this reduces absorbency.
It wasn't you at the parkrun was it, Shazmo?
