I'd say a good pair of shoes is important for any run. A good fitting pair of shoes. You don't want to not achieve your goal in the marathon because of something so trivial as a blister.
I ran my last marathon in a pair of 35 quid new balance from sports direct. I tend to stockpile them as have used them in all my off road events. They fit, they work so that's what I use.
And they are the same ones that Tony Krupicka wears so they can't be that bad.

If you don't have any issues in your running form you should be able to run in almost any trainers that fit correctly.
If not then maybe the right shoes are very important.

What's your angle here Nancy - you've posted two threads, both about shoes and both a bit abstract.
Almost as if the shoes are more important than the running?
When you say "good" are you asking should you spend lots on an expensive pair of shoes?
(a) Nothing new on race day; make sure whatever you wear is worn in (not worn out) and comfortable for the distance.
(b) If what you are using at the moment does not cause you problems then do not try something else.
(c) More expensive does not necessarily mean better.
(d) ..... anyone else have a suggestion?
Probably.

Tony Krupicka? Wasn't he the main character in Saturday Night Fever?
Which marathon, you only say *the* marathon? You'll probably need different shoes if you do a trail marathon rather than a road one.
Are you suggestion that you do or don't need good shoes according to the surface?
Is the marathon a trail or road marathon? I personally love my Asics but also have a soft spot for Nike pegasus.
A good pair of running socks are also very important Nancy.
The question was- is it important to wear good shoes for the marathon?
Yes
Of course it bloody well is.
I'm not getting on with this new name of yours Philomena, when are you going to change it back?
Back to what?
Barry Shitpeas?
I quite like that, it's catchy.
I quite like it but I like to confuse people about my sex
Whatever floats your boat
I think the op has 'done a runner'....
Maybe she's Jewish and got offended
Hmm. Of all the nicknames he (?) could have chosen, that probably wasn't the best.
