PMJ - my marathon WAVA isn't my best by some way, but my ranking certainly is. Check out the V35 marathon rankings for 2014. image

I see that and it is a nice ranking: 10th V35 but actually 19th as there are 6 V40s, 2 V45 and a V50 ahead of you image. I am currently ranked #2 for 1 mile at V45 and 25th for all age groups. It doesn't mean I am good at the mile, just not many people race the mile.

WAVA is not perfect and I can pick holes in it all day, and neither are rankings.

I think TR is right, I like to race a lot (50+ races each year) and the marathon is a big investment for one number and when it goes right it is ecstasy, when it goes wrong it does so horribly, but there is also a lot of grey middle ground.

PMJ - I am a tad confused re your marathon dnf. I understand that you had the foot problem, but you were bang on pace at halfway when you stepped off, were you not? Not trying to rub salt into the wounds & forgive me if I missed something. What was it exactly that went wrong?

Abbers - How did your race go? I may have missed your post.

  • Speedy - a top 10 is a top 10 as far as I'm concerned! What do you reckon has made the biggest contribution to your improvement over the last couple of years?

On the Run Britain website, I'm ranked no.1 Male V45 in my postcode. Can I claim a podium spot for that? image

However I do quite like the fact that I was 1967th overall on Sunday and I was born in 1967.

GM, maybe it should wait until next as the thing for the moment is to celebrate those who had good runs. Suffice to say I didn't run Monday and Tuesday and am tentative today as the foot is again throbbing like buggery so stopping was 100% the right decision. The whole debate about a bad day at the office versus never racing a marathon again can wait (oh shit, I have left the door open to running a marathon but not racing it).

Lorenzo, yes I have done one of those Battersea Park 10Ks.  I don't remember much about it.  It's low-key, flat and fast, multi-lap, and started at 8am. mostly club runners.  No organisational hitches.  They award very many plastic goblets.  I like sleeping too much to do another of those but do like the look of the shorter evening races they put on.  Anyhow - what's your plan? get some better times at shorter distances as springboard for your 2015 sub 3 campaign?

    Excellent ranking Speedy.

GM - purple paint has no real effect. Doesn't taste great but wear a sweat band to wipe mouth after drinking. Luckily not had to run in the rain in it yet.

Legs getting a little less sore this morning but can't see me contemplating a run until the weekend at the earliest.
  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

I'm contemplating my first run today- probably a 5 mile plod. My legs feel a lot better.

Then I'm off to the Lakes this w/end and will do the Keswick parkrun (a new one). Suspect it will not be WAVA in the 80's image

Then Keswick Half Marathon a week later if I don't have to travel to Russia on business...

I love that stat Lorenzo. I was born in 1967 too.

I was 299th in Brighton out of over 8500, that's quite a high finish for me. A day later I'd been bumped to 300th. Only one place but it really annoyed me. image

Had 10 days off running and did a 5 miler off road today. Felt like hard work running at 7.47 pace, yet I ran a marathon quicker than that! Weird, but I guess those marathons take it out of you?

Hi all, I'm just de-lurking to say a huge well done to everyone who has raced marathons over the last two weekends. There's been some fantastic performances and race reports, which have been very motivating for me - though I had a disappointing VLM myself.

I managed to go sub 3.15 last year with a 3.14.37, but decided to a bit braver this year and train for a sub-3 attempt as my half and 10K times indicate that this may be possible. Although sub-3 was never really on, I went through halfway in 1.32.22 so thought that something in the 3.05 to 3.10 range was possible. However, I continued to slow and by 16M knew that this and also any hope of a PB had gone as well. I had a very tough final 10M and crossed the finish line in 3.24.02. However I'm pleased that I toughed it out and I managed to finish as I was desperate to stop at 16M!

I'm would be interested to know what plans everyone followed, particularly those who had breakthrough marathons, as I'm doing the Yorkshire marathon in October (though will probably be more realistic in my target time!)

    Thanks

    LB

I’ve really enjoyed reading about the fantastic performances and race reports in the VLM over the last few days.

Huge congratulations to Martin, CC2, Lit, OO, Lorenzo, SandyB, marrows and everyone else who I may have missed.  Also good performances from Poacher, AR, Ant and TR if not quite your A goals. Sorry to read about your DNF’s PMJ and Minni. There’s always another day!image

Can someone please add my races to the schedule? I always seem to mess up the spacing.image

Hi LB70, we'll done for seeing it through and still a great time.

I've followed the P&D advanced marathoning 55-70 programme a couple of times with good success. I'll roughly follow it for Abingdon this year with one or two tweaks. l may try to up the mileage slightly but won't be running all of the long runs at 20/10% of marathon pace as I found this a little too quick and intense. I'll most probably alternate a time on feet run (8 mm pace) with the p&d method.

I still say Badbark is in danger of a podium finish in the ultras. Get ready to be lonely, at the sharp end of an ultra one can go literally hours without seeing another soul.

Commiserations LB, but well toughed out. Never used a plan, for me the breakthrough was to bin the long runs and learn how to hurt really badly instead.

LB70 - I've had bespoke plans for my last few marathons and managed to knock 15 minutes off my time although I had a DNF this time around.  I'm also doing Yorkshire but I'm planning to completely change things over the next 6 months and do a relatively short build up to the marathon.   I've also used P&D in the past and that served me well too.

Is anyone running a marathon this weekend???

LB, I used a 20 week Hanson's plan. First time following a schedule and I have to say I 'enjoyed' the first 15 weeks until I came a cropper to injury. I didn't get to see the result. It needs a minimum of 6 days per week which is probably too much commitment for me. Next time (?) I will go back to do my own thing, but will use plenty of the sessions from Hanson's.

Quite a contrast for me compared to last years VLM. The day after I was running on a treadmill in the Asics store. This year I'm hobbling about, and have two dogs extremely miffed with me as their walks have been severely reduced.
