Last Sunday I had the pleasure of watching my daughter Alison run the London Marathon, despite the fact that she had suffered injury in the later stages of her training and lost a number of weeks training and was dealt a double blow by getting a chest infection with just a week to go. Despite this she ran anyway a turned in a time of 4 hours. Not only was I proud but I was also inspired.
I decided to at least try to revisit a place I was last at nearly 45 years ago when I last ran for my school cross country team, with Alison help a new pair of runners were acquired, the garish colours these days seems unavoidable
I mapped out a 5km road route and on Tuesday I ran/walked my first 5km in 45 years, on Thursday I repeated and noticed my breathing was a little better and I am now counting bus stops instead of lamp post as run makers.
Today my legs feel like they belong to someone else, my lungs feel like they have been re-inflated, but despite this i am looking forward to tomorrows 5k and more so i am looking forward to when I can get round this in one hit and set a new target.

Good on you Martin, good luck and take it easy
Well done Martin! Good luck with your journey
Thank you Guys
Well done Martin
We'll done buddy great effort
Well done, watch out though, this running lark is quite addictive.
Good luck with it!
Yes I have been reading my way through your thread, very impressive!
Thank you all for your encouragement
I'm sure I've said lots of weird stuff over the last nearly 2 years
there are lots of us here so don't be afraid to ask any questions
Well done and good luck with the running, it is addictive indeed!
Well that's the third 5k this week but the legs feel like they need long soak in the bath!
stick with three times a week for the first couple of months at least. The leg muscles adjust quite quickly, but the tendons etc take longer, so don't rush it
Have set my bike up in the turbo trainer, will use this to gentle spin out the legs muscles today
Ran/walked my forth 5k Monday, the local park run course, and now have an irritating knee pain, so have rested a couple of days, I can only assume at this stage that its the body adjusting to the exercise? Any thoughts please.
Take it slow and steady, personally I'd be doing two or three km three times a week, you need to build up the muscles carefully and the sinews tendons etc... Need even longer to build up, but 0 then 5k might just be to big a jump. Also 3 times a week builds up the muscles once a week is just an injury waiting to happen. It's not running enough to build up the muscles,
Take it easy. Don't over do it.
Our bodies do take time to adapt. and they take longer the older we are.
Are you stretching after your runs? it's always a good idea to have a little routine to do (legs, feet, hips, arms) after each and every run. I used to, when I was very well behaved, stretch every day whether or not I was excerising and I noticed a massive difference.
I wouldn't train more than 3 times a week for a long time. And I would space it out so that you don't train in consequetive days.
If you feel that you want to do more but want to reduce the risk of injury - how about doing exercises to strengthen your core muscles? This will also help with your running.
Your daugther sounds very determined. And it also sounds as though she has inherited that from you. A lovely running family!
Last week was the first week so only trained 3 times and not on consecutive days Monday was the first one this week, so will do a gentle one tomorrow, and no if I am being honest I hadn't done any stretching, I usually start with a brisk walking pace to warm up, maybe that's not enough so i shall look for some pre-run exercises. Thank you both
Kaffeeg...Yes Alison has been running now for two years as I was leaving for work this morning she was off out on a twenty mile run, she runs the Prague marathon in a couple of weeks
Hope she enjoys prague. Impressive stuff indeed!
Had a complete week off this week with a pain in my left knee, last run was last Saturday, on Sunday i could not put any weight on my left leg. Have limped around all week at work on Ibuproten. Today I have been wearing an elasticated knee support and it feels much better. Hopefully the pain will eventually reside allowing me to resume training!...Feeling really frustrated!
Two days of walking now, knee slowly getting better, although still with support, but 12k walked today, feeling better!
Well my daughter Alison's just returned from the Prague Marathon with a medal and a big smile 3hrs 42.....I think it Paris next
