OO: you're setting yourself high standards these days!

Gul: the man who never sleeps...

    GM: get well soon image

Cotswold way relay recce for me so 13.5 miles with lots of hills, whilst carrying a rucksack. Pace not impressive (8.45s) but hopefully with my race head on and nothing to carry I can go a fair bit quicker next week!

TAR, yes the body is falling apart but we don't let things like medical realities or the laws of physics stop us from doing something stupid do we? By the way, I've also been known to have a melodramatic writhe around on the ground too.

Bike this morning - 95miles nice and steady

BB, such a tough break. Hope you are feeling better. You'll be back soon (and better than ever!).

GM, hope you kick the crud soon.

A lot of really nice racing going on. You are a seasoned and competitive lot!

Not much to report on my end. I'm just finishing my 4th week of reverse taper per P&D. Fitness is intact and feeling relatively well recovered. Only hitch is my left PF has been niggly. I've had issues with this on/off for the past 2 years, but it never gets carried away (my fizz is never concerned and it plateaus w/out issue). Anyway, am a bit worried but will see the fizz next week and see what the recommendation is. I was hoping to jump right back into training for the Oct. 19 marathon. Hopefully that will be possible (Maybe-Able).

    Nice biking SJ
Nice recce-ing Joolska, sounds like a challenging event, you will glad of the recce and much faster on race day
    Nice speeding OO
    Nice early rising Gul
Not nice gut-coughing GM, get well soon.
TAR that number of weeks is plenty - better undertrained than, ahem, overtrained

Decided I may-be-able to extend to 10m on the treadie, accompanied by Lady Gaga at ear-splitting volume.  40m for the week, all indoors, very dull. Today's gymfail was the lady power walking at 6kph in jeans and baggy cotton blouse....with a handbag. You couldn't make it up.

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭

Did she hold the handbag the whole time?

VT, assume you have tried the usual calf stretches to ease it off. Another approach is to sit and cross your leg over the opposite knee so you can reach your foot (ah, those were the days, I can't even put my own socks on!) then stretch your big toe back towards your shin with your hands to stretch your PF. Do it a few times and repeat up to 30 times per day (!) - I saw this a while ago and advised a mate of mine to try it and he had good results. You'll probably get funny looks at work though if you're bending your big toe back every 20 minutes.....

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

Bad news GM, I think I'm getting man flu too.

How does that work Jools- is that the distance you share with a team or each runner does 13.5 miles (I hope not image)

  • PoacherPoacher ✭✭✭

I've got a man cold, if that helps

She carried the handbag for the first 10 minutes or so, then realised the error of her ways

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭

Did she have any gels in it?

  • moofmoof ✭✭✭

Shit (panic) Abingdon is only 17 weeks away, looks like I've missed the first week of P&D.

I'd better get the book out and see what I'm doing tomorrow, hope it's not 20.

  • moof, don't worry about the first week of P+D... my sub55 had *3* rest days and today was a gold medal 4m recovery (sh)amble. All those rest days were very confusing, I must say. I think I've a 12m tomorrow.
  • On the subject of gym fails, can anyone explain why walking slowly with a pair of light weight ski poles is different to walking slowly. The only thing I see is that rather than being a slow moving blockage on a path, you are a slow moving blockage with extra things that randomly stick out to the side and back that you can't see and have no control over.

  • JoolskaJoolska ✭✭✭

PMJ: can't help you there, sorry.  I can see the point in using poles if you're up in the mountains and want the extra stability, but not for pootling around in the home counties!

16.5M for me, nursing a rare hangover.  Pace showed the effects of said hangover (8.20s) but at least I got the miles done, bringing up 30M for the weekend and 65M for the week.  Next week is the start of P&D, so the miles will actually drop for a few weeks now image

  • GerardMGerardM ✭✭✭

Jools - 16 miles is a long way with a hangover, well done for having the motivation to get out and do it.

OO - Sorry to hear, hope it's not too bad.

I am still no better. Up until 5am coughing like a chain smoker, had to take my sorry a$$ to the lounge as I was keeping everyone awake. Feeling exhausted and completely out of it. To make matters worse it's glorious outside and the tide is on it's way in and I just want to lie down. Oh dear need to try do something. Hope the meds kick in soon as this is becoming a real pain.

  • Jools - I'm shocked! Any particular reason for the debauched behaviour or is it best left unsaid?!

GM - I can sympathise. My cough / throat problem feels as though it's on the mend but every so often it comes back. Damned annoying for all concerned.

Poacher - another cracking gym fail. Can you set up a camera and shoot some good footage for next time?

Badbark - how are things with you at the moment? I trust you're taking it easy. I showed your report to Mrs L and she was reading it with interest until all the gory details appeared!

Minni - you've gone very quiet. How are you feeling now?

No running mojo for me at all at the moment. Couldn't even face the prospect of going out for a short run in Leeds the other day and opted for 7500m on the rowing machine in the hotel instead.

Having said that, my focus is definitely on the bike at the moment and rounded off the week with 51 miles yesterday morning and was hoping to do something similar this morning. However, I miscalculated the length of the route somewhat (taking 3 OS maps with me should have been a clue) and ended up doing just over 73 miles. Still not in SJ territory but 125 miles over the course of the weekend is good prep for my trip up to Yorkshire in a fortnight's time.

Bike commute tomorrow and then hopefully a bit of running in Birmingham during the week.

  • JoolskaJoolska ✭✭✭

Lorenzo: nothing exciting - just a friend's birthday and drank too much.

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

Glorious day out there. Slow one for me pacing young OO on an 11.5 miler at 8:30 pace, her longest run so far.

I can't see the point of the poles on the pavement either but they are OK off road and on the beach, especially if you skip too image

I get up to about 12 min/miles on the sand with a rare workout for my weedy runners arms as well.

Sounds like you've got it bad GM- mine is just snotty and a sore throat, don't think it hurt my run too much.

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭

Well if you are going to get lost Lorenzo, you may as well do it properly...... 20plus extra miles image Brilliant

18 miles and 2000 ft of climbing in laps of the field this afternoon in the sun. I took a couple of water bottles with me and left them by a bench. Some old fella came past, thought they were litter and emptied them both out and was carting them off to the bin by the time I realised what was happening. Felt a tad dehydrated after 2.5hrs running in the sun with only a couple of mouthfuls of water in me. Beer later to rectify the situation.

  • I do cross country skiing from time to time and know how useful poles are and I have seen people doing Nordic walking properly and that is a good exercise session, but carrying the poles is not doing it properly.

  • SJ - I didn't actually get lost. When I was planning the route I just forget to give any thought as to the distance. D'oh!

Sounds like a wise rehydration strategy to me.

  • MennaniaMennania ✭✭✭

I was told the poles deload the joint if used properly PMJ.

Double figures for me on Saturday morning, slowly getting back at it.

Hope all of those that have this summer cold are feeling better soon.

OO - yes, I think I finshed at about 6am. Let's call it ambitious rather than greedy! Still a great parkrun.
Birch - Nice 20. Have you done the Mablethorpe mara before and do you know if it usually sells out?
GM - take care of yourself - chest infection are not to be sniffed at.
Jools - good recce and nice mileage.
SJ - 95 miles! Not tempted to make up a ton? And how many laps for 18 miles?
VTr - hope you can get back into full training very soon.
    Poacher - Bizarre.
PMJ - maybe the weather forecast was wildly inaccurate.
Lorenzo - hope you find your running mojo soon - a bit of a break won't do much harm.
    Mennania - nice progress.
8 miles this morning including 2 up and down the steepest section of the only thing vaguely resembling a hill in King's Lynn.

  • BirchBirch ✭✭✭

I entered on a whim last year, Gul, with no real campaign, and baled at 18 miles. I entered late (about 3 weeks prior), and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't sell out. There's a half also.  Mable is a flat course, and, although conditions were good last time, I suspect the east coast location could mean strong winds a possibility.

    Morning all image

Some good miles being put in over the weekend, both in trainers and on two wheels. Long runs starting to appear again ahead of autumn maras, and still some speedy park running into the mix. Excellent work everyone.

Those with the lurgy, look after yourselves; GM in particular sounds like you have a bad dose of it. Don't rush back, and make sure you're fully recovered; chest infections can linger.

I'm temporarily joining the bench. Strained something at the top of my right quad on Saturday when bowling, so have been applying plenty of ice since then, and will have a few rest days to hope things mend. Will try an easy run on Wednesday or Thursday to see how things are. A bit annoying, as I felt like I was heading back to some kind of fitness again, but hey ho. Think I stopped before I did any serious damage, so should just be a few days.

Yes thanks, I took it easy last week with only 27 slow miles and 3 days complete rest. Just another 6 easy this morning but plan on a few HMP intervals on grass tomorrow.  I’ve a hilly Half Marathon on Friday night and have just booked a 50k Ultra Marathon in 11 weeks time so I’m mentally back in the game!

I just have to wait to see a specialist about my ‘problem’ and won’t be attempting to run further than 50k until it gets sorted once and for all. Sorry for the graphic posts last week. I decided the embarrassment of revelling all was less to bear than the shame of people thinking I had much choice in the DNF after 85k. image It's not in my psyche to quit.

Sorry to read about the lurgy suffering but good to read P&D starting for most people. I’ll be sticking to my own training plan for Dublin in 17 weeks which has worked well over my previous few marathons.

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭

Good to hear that you are back on it BB, but don't push it too far eh? image

    Ouch Abbers.

Gul, 38 laps and a little bit To give 18. Psychological training as much as physical in preparation for a long, hot multi lap day out at Outlaw. I'm saving the ton for next Saturday on the new steed. Target is to take the same amount of time but to go further. We'll see!  Nice hill work!image

Abbers -back in no time I hope

Gerard- sounds like you got the lurgy  bad

    SJ- 95 miles that's a cycle alright

Badbark- nobody had you down as a quitter

20 miles last week for me (4x5 milers) and a 10 miler yesterday to start the week so on my way back (I hope)image

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭

    Where's that Minni gone to?

glad to hear you are on the comeback trail Leslie.

  • I had a brilliant result at the Freckleton half yesterday.  In a stunning act of serendipitous loveliness, my crumbling Garmin finally breathed its last, thus sparing me the ignominy of sharing details of my (predictably) pathetic mile splits.

Suffice to say, I started slow and got slower.  However I'm tempted to claim a 3 or 4 minute handicap for the blistering heat, which was guaranteed with the 2pm kick-off time.

Residents in the neighbouring villages dragged their hosepipes out to the roadside, to offer welcome showers to passing runners.  And the official water stations were supplemented by charitable families who set up drinks tables outside their houses.  But none of this was enough to aid my aching legs, which were simply unable to maintain anything like a decent pace.  My heart and lungs felt alright, but my legs struggled to cope and felt very heavy and wobbly from about 9 miles onwards.

I'm slightly tempted by the Southport half in two weeks time, as that'll start at a more traditional (and sensible) 9am.  Although two halves in two weeks is perhaps unwise.  Mind you, at least I wouldn't be weighed down by having to cart that heavy old Garmin 305 around with me.   That's got to be worth a minute or two.

Anyway, that was my longest run in almost two years and having completed it (almost) successfully has made me feel all rugged and manly.  Anyone wanna fight?

  • Ah, I was so keen not to dwell on the finish time, that I forgot to mention it at all.
    1:45.
