ok heres my 1st report IM France & my 1st IM Event
Flew out Friday morning happy to go on time after all the stress with french ATC, Met Iron Pingu @ airport luggage reclaim sorry not much time to talk as i was with the Mrs and kids and bike and cases etc.. Caught a taxi to hotel within 11/2 i was lying on a sun lounger in the Blue Beach having a glass of chardonnay thinking this Ironman lifestyle is great, Bit gutted not to stay in the Ibis with the rest of the crew but i had booked my hotel before i joined the crew.
Woke up at 3.50am set alarm for 4am but could not sleep,Filled my water bottles,Plastered myself with sun oil packed my street wear bag and off downstairs for Breaky sat outside on the patio eating my fig rolls and Coffee etc watching all the people stumbling out of the nightclubs drunk, Wishing i could swap with them.
Long walk to T1 went up to the bike felt the tyres and pumped the front only as i could not be arsed wasting energy walking round to the rear wheel to pump it..walking to the swim was long and nervous could not help noticing how many had cut necks from chaffing wet suit swims before hand just like love bits everyone seemed to have one.. Did not have swim warm up again as i could not be botherd to push past everyone to warm up.. hooter goes off we went.. Swim went ok no major problems enjoyed the 1 st lap and was out at the exit before i knew it,2nd lap was bit more of a struggle with sighting etc but out at 1hr.29 watch saying i had swam 2.78miles prob as i could not swim straight..Eat a full box of Jaffa cakes in T1 into bike gear and away again no issues, Passed Mouse outside Nice and later on the 1st climb saw Dave the Spartan he kept asking me where the cake shop was,His face was bright white with i thought sun cream but now i know it was due to been bitten by a jelly fish what a hero! all went well untill hit the rain and freezing cloud etc...started shaking badly and wanted to quit... had to Piss on the bike 4 times and over hands to get some feeling back think that saved my race... sorry if its to much info. lots of crashes saw a guy in a neck brace lying on the road side looked bad and lots of skinny Italians begging for bin liners etc and quitting at feed stations, but with bit more pissing in my pants managed to get through it,As i got close to Nice i could feel the heat starting to rise and it was a welcome feeling..
Into T2 sat down ate box of Salted Pringles, Spoke to a yank telling me we had just over 6 hrs to do the run and he would need every minute,I was feeling good then and thought this is going to be easy, How wrong was i at mile 13 my throat closed and felt sick so i had enough i went into portaloo and finger down throat, after few mins i came out everything was spinning then i could not remember which direction i was running not a good feeling... 13-17 miles i was in a bad place had some very dark moments, Then looked at watch and thought if i keep going at this pace i am not going to make the time then i noticed everybody around me had extra band on the arms SHiT.. panic.. some how i started to Run and it felt ok then i started to pass a few people then just 1 loop to go i don't remember much about that last one apart from a guy shouting you are going to make it! passed a few runners heading out for their last lap which were not going to make the cut off but still went out to do the distance which i give total respect to,I hit the finish shoot people high fiving me a moment i will remember for ever...Watched the fireworks with Dave Spartan and went to bed no Celebrating for me body was in bits...What an experience the way i see it there is no losers in this game everybody is a winner,Just to get to the startline is a massive achievement amd a big thankyou to all Pirates & Supporters who cheered me on.... Allez Pirates! </
I have never been that cold on a bike before and that's saying a lot! Wish I'd taken my arm warmers with me, didn't even consider it.
Colder than that May in Bala Pingu??
Very well done to all to all who sailed. I'm loving all the reports . Those downhills in the rain sound utterly terrifying. I'm glad you all made it through okay!!! Can't wait until the Champs next year (supporting not racing!).
Didnt think it was nearly as cold as the "terrible" Bala year but it was still bloody cold especially as we were in friggin France ehat it was was much more dangerous never seen so many crashes in a race
That was the coldest May night for 10 years when we all did the Bala recce - woke up to frost in the tent! As RBM says, you don't expect that kind of weather (or wetter/colder) in France in July though!!!

I remember that weekend. Longest ride I'd ever done, struggled up the hills and poor Dave was freezing to bits waiting for us slowbies.
Well done all Nice finishers.
Here's my write-up of Ironman France. As per usual it goes on a bit.
