  • Bkins - I love my ISM saddle to, didn't take much breaking in, but 3.5hrs may be a harsh ride if you don't get on with it.

  • OK cheers, i'll maybe try 30 minutes beforehand.. I'm just wary that 30 minutes easy might not really reflect a long harder effort. In my head i'm just thinking how bad can it be but reviews suggest it can be pretty bad!

I really struggled with numbness on the Turbo (guess I dont move around much), but never had problems out on the road. Given numbness is worse than soreness (and can cause infertility problems later on!) I looked at ISM to resolve it.

The Adamo (I use a prologue) is great for removing any trace of numbness, but I do find it puts alot of extra pressure directly on the sit bones. I've been expecting to slowly get used to it, but it doesnt seem to be happening, so while the weather has been better, I've gone back to the trusty Charge Spoon while not on the Turbo. As soon as I'm back on the turbo more regularly, I'll swap the Adamo back on again.

  • I got through 2 hours of what could best be described as fartlek cycling last night.. fairly random bursts of 2-5 minute intervals. No problems with the saddle at all. Feels a lot better!

  • Still not back on the bike yet. Ran home for some extra exercise as I can feel myself going backwards!! Not been able to shoehorn swimming into my lunches either with work.

  • Hi all - thought I'd bump this post with a quick 'how's everyone's training going?', especially those doing outlaw / imuk.

TE - don't worry too much, apparently it's taper time anyway according to everything I read.... It's killing me though not being able to put in normal training hours. It's amazing how you get accustomed to ~18 hours a week training and thinking it is normal!

My bike obviously thinks it deserves a taper though as 3 out of my last 4 long rides have been disrupted or cut short by punctures, armrest shearing off on tribars or exploding spokes... Hopefully it's getting it all out of its system before the big day!

If anyone's doing outlaw and wants to catch up give me a shout. I'm not a proper pirate so won't be gate crashing any of the pirate gatherings but it'd be cool to say hi on race day or the Saturday. If anyone needs any help with anything before or on race weekend just PM me. I'm local to HP so can help out with any info or kit if needed.

As you can tell from my chirpy post, my current feeling is that sub 10 is definitely on the cards as long as the weather / itb gods are having a good day!!!

    Good luck!
  • I seem to have finally shaken off my achilles injury and I'm back running again. Bike rides are getting longer and hopefully quads are getting stronger. Right now I'm struggling to walk upstairs after bricks last night so I'm not convinced on the getting stronger part yet.

I'm racing Hardman in Ireland in 6 weeks on Saturday. Training is behind where I had hoped after 12 weeks injured. Running has taken a huge hit but I could swim and cycle through it. I did a 6k swim at the weekend at 1:35/100m which would bring me in bang on the hour for the ironman. No worries there anyway.

Sub 10 remains the aim but considering I haven't run a marathon before and I will need to run in around 3:15 its going to be tough!

  • Excellent going Nicco, hope you can do it at Outlaw!

I've completely lost all mojo and am stuck in the ironman blues now. I got round a shortened olympic tri at the weekend but was fairly average and had no energy... 14 days after IM was probably a bit too soon to expect much. Have a half in 6 weeks and then a marathon in 8 weeks but no motivation... so have told myself nothing for a week and then get stuck back in!

  • Nage 4,25 km sans combinaison hier. 67 minutes - fantastique!

    Seulemente courais aujourd'hui. Fatigue!

  • Je me suis retrouve dans la piscine de nouveau a l'heure du dejeuner!

11,6 km depuis Lundi. Il devient plus facile... mais pas rapidement.

  • You're annoying!

When are you comnig for your gin? I'm close to drinking it

  • Shitting myself. That is all.

  • Likewise. Tough session? I had a long brick session and went well enough but I was broken after running for an hour. Went off too fast at the start.

Started with 3.5 hours at race pace on the bike then after 5k running I was naively thinking a sub 3 marathon was realistic as I was slightly faster and felt great. Then the wheels came off! Slowed down and got through the hour okay but couldn't have gone much longer.

I've another long brick next weekend to try get the pacing and fuel right. Less than 6 weeks to race day now.

  • Last race simulation for me. 2.1km/50km/6km.

There's a whole host of things that are wrong, but I'm throwing myself at it headlong now. The next 6 days will consist mostly of physiotherapy and psychology.

  • Good luck on Sunday!

  • Good luck mate... expecting you to smash it!

  • Right then - it's race weekend!

Weirdly not crapping myself yet, quite calm and confident. Seems like everything's in hand in terms of packing, equipment etc. something is bound to go horribly wrong.....

Didn't even mind tapering as much as normal as I'm mega busy at work - in fact that's probably why I'm not too nervous as I've not had time to spend obsessing about the weather or if every sneeze or cough is the onset of bubonic plague. Even going to register today didn't get the nerves jangling.

    hopefully all a good sign!!!!

TE - you've probably posted it previously, but what are your expected splits? If I see a pirate on course at the same point as myself (and I'm going well) there's a fair chance it'll be you so I'll shout up!

Anyway, hope everyone else is going well.

    BRING IT ON! image

  • TE needs to run the marathon in less than 3:33:10 to get under 10 hours... should be OK as long as the wheels dont come off!! image

  • in 4th place... C. 10 minutes behind 3rd place but seems 3rd place is slowing already at the second run split... awaiting TE's 2nd run split still

  • So near yet so far... Lack of any sort of long runs really bit me in the bum from about 10miles into run

good swim 1:02 was as good as I dared to hope far. Bike of 5:16 was pretty decent though I thought 5:10 was on the cards for a long time before I had a tricky spell around mile 80 that lasted for nearly an hour. Transitions were even decent. I must have been right next to TE as I got on the run course with 6:26 on the clock and thought 'I can do this, 8 minute mailing with a bit of a safety margin. No problem.' and for a while it was easy enough. As a sub 3 hour marathon /1:22 half marathon guy running 8 min miles feels like it should be simples!

however, a combination of a few things - two pit stops which I don't normally need to bother with, my knee almost letting go at about 14 miles and I had to stop to encourage it with some forceful massage and some prescription painkiller but really it was just a lack of run training that stopped me going sub 10. Longest run was only 13 ish miles and it showed...

total time was 10:16, could have probably eked out a few more minutes, I ran between every aid station, but once it was clear I wasn't going to get the sub 10 I walked them all rather than my strategy of alternating between walk one, run through one etc

still, reasonably happy. Especially with swim time as it didn't feel great, but that is a brilliant time for me.

was planning on a crack at KQ at Bolton next year if I went sub 10... Need a bit of time to reflect on how today went before making any decisions.

if anyone on here was volunteering or just lending encouragement then thank you. the support and aid stations are amazing.

    cheers

  • Nice one Nicco. Great time! At least you know you were just a few longer runs short of being sub 10.

  • I did shout at TE on Sunday as he came in from the bike

"Hope you have a 3:30 marathon in you" he shook his head but he did look great every time I saw him

  • Thanks for watching guys!

Lengthy race report to follow but I think the summary is: Swam about right (despite borrowing a wetsuit!!!). Biked about right relative to threshold, but didn't have the endurance base to sustain that and have enough in the tank for the run. Got to 10 miles thinking it was possible, then the wheels fell off.

You don't get the result you want. You get the result you trained for!

Nicco we must have been pretty damn close most of the way through - I was 1:01 for the swim, onto the run course together, then finished in 10:15. Let's just blame the sun/wind...

  • Oo thanks by the way for the bootie comment Engineer. Kept me smiling all round the run! Sorry you didn't get the result you wanted, you were looking good! image

  • Well done TE - shame you didn't get the result you wanted, but cracking performance nevertheless.

  • TE - was it you I was talking to in the medical tent afterwards? Was chatting to a bloke who was telling me about using a borrowed wetsuit that was too small and I'm sure he mentioned his swim was 1:01???? That you? I was all in 2xu black kit with an ice pack on my knee....

I'm going to blame the wind..... Quite like the sun so the heat didn't bother me but did find a couple of stretches tough going on the bike.

We will get it next time! Though I'm making plans to get the knee sorted and considering Bolton so that might make it a bit tougher!

Anyone in here got a view on difference in finish time for Bolton vs outlaw? 20-30 mins?
  • Yes that was me!!

Sorry, I was in no fit state to recognise anyone at that point. Still working on cobbling together a race report... and no sign of my wetsuit image

  • Nicco you are at 27:40 in the tri247 video, if you're interested image

  • I thought it must have been you but I was wondering if I'd got confused with someone I had a brief chat to at the last feed station.....

you seemed in ok shape to me but I was probably equally knackered. That said I was way better the post finish last year when I was a bit of a mess due to some mild sunstroke.

i appear to have caught the camera a few times - I'm on the bike going through car colston (all black kit, inc bike with a weird looking casco helmet with black visor) and dismounting off the bike actually looking quite slick! Thankfully they missed the bit where I forgot that you shouldn't pedal when you're feet are out of your shoes getting ready for the dismount. very nearly got dumped on my arse in front of everyone! also at finish so I must be more photogenic than my wife tells me???

think I've just had a change of heart about Bolton as I only really want to have a go to qualify for kona. Ive just quickly priced up how much it would cost to take wife and kids to hawaii and it's just to much to justify what is basically an ego trip for me. Think I'd rather spend a few grand on racing Roth or somewhere like that and spend the rest on more sensible stuff (like an awesome skiing holiday or something).

anyway, off to see knee specialist tomorrow to see how I get sorted before even thinking about running again.... Went for a 30 minute swim this morning and felt remarkably good but I'm conscious not to get back into it to soon. At the rate I'm eating though I'd better start training again at some point soon...
