Speedy- what does google know anyway ? Get a proper diagnosis first .

Gerard -65 a week sounds good that's what I was at before the wheels came off , now trying to get back up to that .

11 miles for me this morn with 8 at 7:25 m/miles (Possible mara pace)image

Ullswater 3.8k swim in 1:20.  Water was too cold for my pansy like disposition and it took me half an hour to get used to it and breathing properly after having dropped right off the back and mixing up breast stroke and treading water to try to acclimatise. Cost me quite a bit of time and I'd missed all of the decent feet to draft. Then I was off and moved through the field quite smoothly apart from turning at the wrong buoy on the second lap and being chased by a kayak - my total swim distance on the watch was 2.79miles as opposed to the planned 2.4 so it was quite a detour! Anyhoo. A couple of lessons hammered home again. Did enjoy the last mile or so though.

    1) get used to the water before the race and do a proper 20minute warm up

    2) get some anti-fog spray so I ain't as blind.

I then punished myself for the next 2 hours by running up the mountain on the opposite shore of the lake. 2500ft climbing, a twisted ankle and lots of gorse bush scratches ensued.  Lovely day for it.

  • I can't actually get an appointment at my GP for a whole month, which is more than mildly annoying. I cannot run without pain, so whatever it is, it's getting worse rather than better. I think I'm going to have to accept that my targets for this autumn aren't going to happen and I need to find some exercise that I can do that doesn't hurt. I'll test some things out at the gym tomorrow. I'm not sure that cycling or elliptical will work since they still move the hip. We'll see. I just have to break it to the team manager that I won't be racing on Wednesday.

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭

A month! That's not hitting targets is it? Cycling is a lot easier on the joint Speedy so might be worth a try to see if it hurts or not.

  • VTrunnerVTrunner ✭✭✭

GM, nice running of late. Seems things are clicking for you. Here's to a good streak.

Speedy, been burned plenty by the internet diagnosis. Until told otherwise, I suggest you do not panic. All may still be well. A good fizz might help to sort things out quickly. Good luck and hang in there.

SJoe, sorry to hear of your hip woes too. Hope springs eternal for you too! And good effort in the race. Sounds like you took the scenic route but was a nice story in the end! And some serious climbing...tired just thinking about it.

Leslie, nice run. When is your marathon? Nice when you have those efforts that just work.

Regarding the injury question. Over the past 2 years, I have had a number of small niggles that I could train through. But last July lost about a month to ITBS. Other than that been pretty much dialed in. Over the last 12 months I've raced 2 marathons and lived (just barely) to tell. I didn't start running consistently until 2011 and got hurt a lot initially. So some of my good luck lately had probably just been consistency and getting used to the running volume. But the other part has been getting some specific help from my Fizz...have a few exercises I do consistently now and think this has been a big part of staying on the road.

This week was a turning point. Got an LT effort over 5 miles Tues, had a 10 mile subLT run that went very well Friday, and hit a 17 miler (easy effort) today (although last few miles were tough as the week caught up with me). Last 3 weeks have been 49, 52, and 54 miles. PF good. So think will step back next week and absorb the work.

Took some endurolytes today. Can't say they helped, but didn't hurt either. Still need to find some solution before the next marathon. Will test out some NUUN tabs too.

  • BirchBirch ✭✭✭

No idea if that's a good time, SJ, but swimming (in open water) for that period (and that distance )!!  is certainly worthy of respect in my book !
    Speedy - I guess sympathy doesn't help, but I really hope you get sorted . . .  .

Rounded off a 9 day 70 mile block today with appropriately named Notfast 10K. 45:26 is where I'm at these days, but did follow (since last Sat) 21,0,14,6,0,5,6,11,10K(7 inc w/up). First official 10K since 2002!  More importantly, a good family outing with daughter (3rd), and son (10th) . Pretty humid.

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭

Birch, I checked the watch data and the last mile was in 27minutes which is 1:05 pace. THAT, I would have been happy with. That's a nice solid block from you and nice to enjoy a family race too.

Sounds like it's going well VTR. Like your self discipline to both actually do physio exercises and to back off when things are going well.  Amazin'!

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

Well done SJ I would be terrified out in that lake. Miserable situation Speedy, hope you fears are wrong.

After pacing Junior to victory in the Keswick parkrun y/day I headed off to Morpeth for my 5k track race. Only to discover I got my dates mixed up- the event was actually today but I had made other plans so could not repeat- absolutely devastated. Then got wasted at a Paul Weller concern last night- no running possible today image

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭

    Was it entertainment OO?

  • GerardMGerardM ✭✭✭

OO - Nice pacing duties! Shame about the 5,000m but a Paul Weller concert sounds like a decent trade off to me.

SJ - Great swimming in the lake and then running up mountains! Nice work!

Sh1t run for me today, 15 miles and didn't enjoy it at all. Sleep deprived night before and wanted to pack it in after 2 miles but carried on. Very warm again and got a bit sunburnt. 8:05 average but felt much harder than that. Sometimes these workouts don't deliver physically but are more of a mental challenge. That's what I am trying to come to terms with and the latter worries me a bit.

  • Gul DarrGul Darr ✭✭✭

GM - I often have a three-course breakfast at the weekend! Pleased to hear you're back out running again. The heat won't have helped yesterday.
SJ - Good effort - I am useless at swimming. My injury just before the Roadrunner marathon was the end of a two and a half year training period with nothing other than a few niggles.
    Leslie - good week.
Speedy - hope you can get to see someone sooner.
    VTr - good tempo run.
Birch - good racing from the Birch family!
OO - sorry to hear about the mix-up. Hope OO junior's parkrun victory and the concert made up for it.
My first week of speed began today with 5 miles @ 8:55 m/m!

  • JoolskaJoolska ✭✭✭

The swim sounds tough, SJ - well done for finishing!  The run sounds a little bit more my kind of thing, but also very hard work.

GM: we've all had those tough runs where the pace:effort ratio feels out of kilter.  Sometimes the best thing you can say about them is simply that you got them done, but they all count come race day.

Birch: good to see you back in a 10k image

OO: ouch!  Hope the round trip wasn't too long...

Speedy: hope you get a diagnosis soon - maybe badger the GP receptionist by emphasising the pain!

Weekend in Glasgow with the family (and watching the athletics) for me.  Switched runs around so that I only had 5M easy and then 9M incl 4 @ HMP to do whilst there.  I'd forgotten how difficult tempo runs are solo and early doors - had to settle for a progressive 4M starting at MP as I moved through the gears somewhat sluggishly.

  • AbbersAbbers ✭✭✭

Proper read back a bit later, but a quick "well done" to SJ for banging out a tough swim and following it with more self-inflicted punishment!

On the x-training vs running debate, I've only done one mara campaign, but it was 16 weeks injury & illness free with just running. My only injuries in the last 2 years have been cricket related ones, rather than running, with groin and quad strains caused by bowling. This latest one meant I missed the Wyvern 10k yesterday, which I had been planning as a PB attempt. Annoying, but there will be other races. Also frustrating that in my absence, my team-mates pulled off a win on Saturday!

  • Nice work by the family Birch.

That's an impressive day's training, Slokey.  I did admire the scenery of that mountain.  Didn't occur to me to run up it though.

I got there early and watched a bit of the 2.4 mile race.  Then I slunk off to a cafe for tea and cake and tried to come up with a valid reason not to go through with it.  But, unusually for a race day, I had forgotten to be ill or injured.

I was only mildly terrified as I entered the lake and managed not to scream when a fellow swimmer inadvertently splashed some icy water onto my face.  Starting right at the back, my focus was solely on not drowning or (even worse) having to call to one of the kayak marshals for help.

After a few minutes of friendly bumping and bashing, I found myself in clear water and was swimming well.  I had obviously left those losers behind.  I forgot about the cold and just concentrated on form.  I was King of the lake.  In fact, I was probably going to win this thing.

After a while, I looked up and realised I was heading the wrong way.  I was going at a 90 degree angle to everyone else.  What a nuisance.  So I turned around, caught up with a group and re-joined the bumping and bashing.  Two swimmers actually stopped and apologised after they had punched me in the face, which I thought was very polite of them.

The winner crossed the line in a frankly ridiculous 19 minutes.  I finished hot on his heels in 35.37, relieved that it wasn't quite the humiliation I had feared (182nd out of 340).

Slokey - What kind of voodoo gadget do you have that tells you the time and distance of your swim?

  • BirchBirch ✭✭✭

Good non-drowning, TAR, and respectable placing.
Shame about the diary malfunction, OO !
SJ said "Was it entertainment OO" image
Gerard, a bit surprised at your self-doubt - you have proven you have  plenty of mental strength . . .

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭

Brilliant report TAR image Well done on not being dead. Your mile time was a lot faster than the first mile I did yesterday with all my mincing about. I have a Garmin 910XT which not only measures time and distance but also stroke count, stroke rate, stroke length and efficiency. Buggered if I know what to do about any of those but they are there for posterity. It also measures cycling cadence and the usual running stuff. Don't think it can tell the time though.

Abbers, who'd a thought cricket was a dangerous game? I thought it was just loafing around wearing jumpers.

Jools, did you enjoy the athletics? Well done on grinding it out. You too GM!

  • GerardMGerardM ✭✭✭

Birch - Personal life issues affecting me in a big way at the mo and it seems to be affecting my running now too but least I can run, well for now anwyay. Well done on your family triple performance. What were you son and daughter's times?

Jools - You're right but alot is out of kilter at the mo. Glad you had time some enjoyable family time at the weekend. I am off to Dublin again this week for a 5 day break. Will be celebrating a very good friends 40th who has flown home especially for it.

Gul - 3 course breakfasts, wowzer I am impressed.

TAR - Nice reporting, I cannot see the appeal though of an open water swim race/boxing match myself.

  • AbbersAbbers ✭✭✭

    So...

CC2 - as others have said, don't believe internet self-diagnosis just yet! Wait & see what the experts have to say.

Minni - good luck with your hip appt. later in the week.

GM - excellent news that you're back on your feet.

Gul - the usual impressive early morning work, 16 LSR noted.

SJ - 3.5 hours on your bike, Ullswater and fell run. Getting nice & fit. The loafing around wearing jumpers is a benefit reserved for batsmen and spinners. Keep meaning to wear my Garmin during a match one day and see how much distance I cover, purely for self-interest.

Rennur - sleeping & running easy runs properly easy are essential during high mileage IMHO.

Fishy - 6 years injury free is a great record. Your training obviously works well for you.

Leslie - solid MP miles there.

VTR - good solid & consistent mileage from you.

Birch - love the fact you all run as a family. Good set of results by the sounds of it.

OO - Parkrun, concert & drinking. Good work all round.

Jools - well done on fitting runs in around your family visit. Not always easy to find time for that.

TAR - love the report! Reckon that's a pretty decent result.

More swimbling for me. 500, 500, 250, so gradually uping distance (OO's nudge in that direction noted). The 500s were in about 12 minutes, so ~38 minute miles. No idea if that's good, bad or indifferent, but I suspect I can guess! Leg feels fine, so will give it a few more days yet to try and make sure there's no recurrence next weekend.

Speedy - Sally at Impact Physio in Long Eaton was very sensible when I saw her about my sprained ankle last year.

  • BirchBirch ✭✭✭

Sorry to hear that, Gerard; I hope things are resolved soon. Tks for asking - son 36:42; daughter 44:41 (well over two mins down on her PB, but she perked up at £45 voucher for 2nd senior female(3rd overall), which she immediately exchanged for a half-price pair of racer-trainers at the shoe stall)!

  • GerardMGerardM ✭✭✭

Birch  - Thanks. Your son is quick. Nice voucher win for your daughter too. You must be proud.

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

Hilarious report TAR- should you change your avatar to the accidental swimmer?

  • PoacherPoacher ✭✭✭
Can we change the mantra from "Don't be sh*t" to "Don't be sh*t, and don't drown either"
  • Gul DarrGul Darr ✭✭✭

TAR - great report! Well done.
GM - sorry to hear things are not too good at the moment.
    Overslept again and not out till 5.47 - squeezed in 8x200m off 200m recoveries: 0:35, 0:36, 0:33, 0:36, 0:34, 0:36, 0:34, 0:36.

  • marrowsmarrows ✭✭✭

Enjoyed the report TAR! Did you wear a wetsuit? Did you, SJ?

    GM - hope things fix

Joolska - forgive me - I can't remember what you are training for. An autumn marathon?

Been away at a conference and then away for fun, not training properly but churning out some junk miles to earn ice creams, and peeing on Strava lamp posts.  On my return, I've discovered that if I take the shortest route and give it beans I can actually run the commute in an hour flat - cool! Now someone, please give me a kick up the behind to do some proper structured training..

  • marrowsmarrows ✭✭✭

PS congrats to the speedysprogs, Birch

    Gul-speedy pre-breakfast reps

Vtrunner- my mara was early june , it didn't go well but I'm working on a new short sharp training plan to get back to mara fitness image

and on that note 20 miles covered in a speedy 8:01/mile , went so much better than last weeks 18 dead march and I even added more hills this time and my one  (out of date) gel consumed, last one  .image

  • AbbersAbbers ✭✭✭

    Nice reps from Gul.

    Impressive 20 there, Leslie.

More splashing for me, 1.2k made up of 3x400.

  • GerardMGerardM ✭✭✭

Gul - 5:47 start! Shame on you man! Nice reps, I've only ever done 800's, 1k and mile reps.

Marrows - Your butt must surely feel suitably kicked by now? Thanks for the good wishes. Please remind me what your A race is on the horizon?

Leslie - That's a very solid 20 and you sound like you enjoyed it well done. I can count on one finger how many of those type of runs I have enjoyed.

Abbers - Good splashing once more. When are you going to take the plunge back into running?

Eventful day this end . Got home and had a 30 min window to run so decided to do 4 miles at DMP and that came out at 7:11mm. Felt like I was working a bit but not hard. I honestly have no idea what it should feel like. It was warm about 20c and a light breeze. I had to be sensible as I am off to the Motherland again on Thursday and am doing a 6k race,I know weird distance. It's a charity event which normally attracts about a 1,000 runners. Last year the 1st male won in 19 mins and 1st female snuck under 22. No idea what I should expect as I am bit hit and miss at the mo. After my run tonight I had a trip to see a specialist surgeon about a recurring health issue which I had some minor surgery on last week and was informed that I will have to go under the knife and have an operation mid August. Recovery is expected to be two weeks but that kinda puts the kybosh on my October marathon. It's not the news I wanted to hear obviously but it should sort that problem out at least.
