Not that I know much about these things but that sounds great, especially the marathon at leas- very impressive. You'll have to tell us more...

I do have a blister in an unmentionable place which would literally qualify as blister porn.  No pictures are available. Wouldn't want to get the ladies in a fluster.

PMJ - that sounds like a fantastic result in scorching heat for the 5k.
SB - good effort on a really hot day - obviously would have been significantly faster on a cool one.
SJ - what a result! Fantastic performance. Looking forward to a full report.

  • JoolskaJoolska ✭✭✭
    Well done, Slokey! That's fantastic!
  • Fish52Fish52 ✭✭✭

Slokey - Brilliant performance and cracking time. Recover well...and hope the blister is soon healed!

Birch - another nice 20 there. You are certainly racking them up.

Lorenzo - Great to get over the 10 mile mark and a pleasing pace too.

PMJ - Great back to back racing. It's always satisfying to win over the younger generation.

Sporty - Good racing from you too and an encouraging indicator of the training yet to come.

0051 - Fantastic time for your 5k and thanks for the info about the poles. I think I'll get a set...any tips about price and specs?

13.4 LSR for a slight cut back week. Another hilly route with just over 1100 feet, which felt good in the slightly cooler conditions. More early morning biking today.

Excellent work , SJ - full report ?

  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭

    Nice going SJ, well done!

Rather than mull over the disappointment of not being a heat performer on Saturday,I ran again yesterday. Met a mate who is training for Bournemouth mara and was on a long run. His route took him past my house so I joined him for the middle part of the run, 10 miles were planned for me.

We mucked about with the route and I ended up doing 12 miles, longest run since April and my mate commented on how strong I ran. We varied the pace and attacked the hills. The temperature when I left home was 23 degrees and felt a lot cooler than the race on Saturday. Just goes to show how much the heat takes out of me.

A good base is forming and the plan now is to do the Thames Half Marathon in October. That should test where my fitness is before the autumn/winter marathon training.

SB - I love running in the heat but not racing. I think 5k is the maximum distance I would race in extreme weather. You must not worry about your time. Any plans for other races in the pipeline?

OO - Great 5k time! You just keep getting better.

Slokey - That's a very good performance, well done and I look forward to your report.

PMJ - Nice transatlantic racing and pacing combo. Can you pop over here sometime and do the same?image

Birch - Solid running as ever.

I ran 3 times last week. 12 miles Wednesday way too hot but took it relatively easy. 10k Saturday at 7:30mm pace and 10k last night at 6:48 pace.

I have decided to forget about racing for the foreseable futue and just run for sheer fun and for health reasons. It's helping me get through a very tough time in my life at the mo and am blessed to have this. My partner of 18 years and wife of 15 told me recently that she has moved on with her life and that I should do the same. Like most marriages we have had our fair share of problems and maybe didn't deal with them perhaps the way we could have. There is no one else involved and never has been but to be told you are no longer loved by someone who you love is completley and utterly devastating. Apologies for airing on here but it's therapy in a tiny way. Tell your loved ones you love them and show them. Don't give up on that as it really matters. Sorry for the depressing post, none meant to folks on here.

That is phenomenal SJ. Very well done!  Looking forward to the report.

Gerard: sorry to hear that and no apology needed for sharing the sad news. I hope you're able to keep things civilised and if the odd rant on here assists, then go for it. The sad thing about hitting mid 30s for me is seeing friends who married in our mid 20s going their own separate ways.

Thunder Run done at the weekend.  What an event and what an awesome team I was in.  The superfast MsE was amazing.  I was worried before (and during) about my lack of training and it showed on the event but I was still pleased with what I knocked out - 5 laps of the 10k course.  We clocked up 27 laps in total over the 24 hours and finished 2nd ladies team.  If I get time later (heading off on holiday in the morning so lots to do) I will do a race report.  I'm still feeling quite emotional about the whole thing in lots of ways!

    ((GM))

Minni - 5x10k is a sort-of interval ultra. You are a warrior! So is MsE
  • BirchBirch ✭✭✭

Gerard, your situation is exactly the same as I (we (Mrs B & I)) faced 3 years or so ago, so the phrase "I know how you feel" is not a platitude. Although this is a running forum, and, with a couple of honourable exceptions, I've not had the pleasure of meeting forumites in real life, I did find the kind comments I received enormously helpful, so please keep training and posting; certainly no apologies required.

Minni - fantastic effort after your recent travails - a report would be great
MsE too - come on, get posting !!

  • GerardMGerardM ✭✭✭

Thanks everyone it means alot to hear kind words right now.

Jools - I am a calm level headed type & also very passionate but not an unreasonable or irrational in anyway but you are right about trying to keep things civilised. Deep emotions can alter one's mind and therefore actions but I am not bitter at all, maybe a tiny bit angry but mostly hurt and feeling lonely. Sadly the only family I have here is one which is no longer mine.

Birch - I knew you went through a similar thing but wasn't sure when. Thank you.

Minni - So pleased for you and MsE, well done and enjoy your holiday.

  • MinniMinni ✭✭✭

I will try and put something together but can I note a couple of observations and ask for comments?

I did 5 laps with about 3.5 hours between.  It was very hot on my first two on Saturday afternoon and I drank loads of water the whole before and after laps.  I also drank 500ml during the second lap.  I was aware of keeping fuelled but them I was very, very sick during lap 3 during the night.  I tried to hold onto it and managed till about 8k but then puked everywhere.  I then finished the lap strong and my next lap (also in the night) was my best.

    Q.  How do you learn what to and not to eat when doing endurance things like this?  I obviously got it completely wrong.  Is it trial and error and very much an individual thing?

My muscles were tight right from the off.  Probably mostly down to not training for the past couple of months.  I foam rolled between each lap and this really helped.  By lap 4 my legs were feeling great. However, after this lap I didn't roll as I wanted to try and get a couple of hours kip before my next lap.  Lap 5 was a shuffle from the start and my legs didn't loosen up, as they had done previously.  I was done in when I finished.

    Q.  Does foam rollering really help that much or was it just the natural deterioration and the fact I lacked training for such as event?

I'm sure there's no set rules for any of this but people more experienced in ultra running might have opinions worth noting for future reference.

I think had we done some training for it we would have fared better, Minni. I think you did brilliantly especially considering your Chunder Run!

We were the only two not to have done any proper training and to arrive bearing our ageing bodies complete with injuries.

Gerard - (hug) life's a bit rubbish like that but I think you just have to look forwards not backwards. And come for some support from internet strangers which is typically available in never ending quantities at any time of day.

SJ - you are a beast! Ggggggrrrrrr!

I am going to let Minni tell you all about it as it was her gig and I was very grateful to have been invited along to make up the numbers.  Here is a photo of us on the podium for now.

  • marrowsmarrows ✭✭✭

PMJ - jealous that you can bang out sub 40 on demand just like that

Slokey - congratulations! After the blisters/blood trailers, I can't wait for the full feature-length walnuts etc. report

Minni & MsE - top job.  I've never done ultras or felt sick when running, so ill-qualified to advise, but anyway: if nervous of GI trouble in a long race, I try to swallow the things I need before race day - carbs, water, salt, maybe potassium - then on the day just drink to thirst and eat moderately/to hunger.

    GM - sorry to hear.

Right, I want some advice.  Just realised i last did intervals on 9th May (and a paltry 5x600m at that). No wonder I don't feel sharp! I'm doing a 10K on 21 August. What quality sessions shall I do between now and then? Was thinking of racing a 5K tonight but think i will bin it for reps of some sort..

  • G-DawgG-Dawg ✭✭✭

marrows: how about a pyramid type session? Nice short bursts as it's your first for a while and then increase the rep distances over the next couple of weeks?

    Something like 200, 400, 800, 800, 400, 200 with 200m jog/walk recoveries and a mile w/up and down to bookend it?

I've been playing with these sessions a lot recently and can really feel the benefit. I go back to shorter burst sessions after building up to mile reps over a period of weeks. I never do the same session in successive weeks to avoid comparisons.

  • Minni, on the eating and drinking advice I think trial and error is definitely called for. Our club did a 24 hour race and the guys actually went for a 5 mile run 3 or 4 times during the day to test out things and see what happened. I personally can eat much closer to running than others (so a friend needs 3 hours before he can run after eating which makes it fun for early morning runs) but can't eat much after I have run hard, so with 3.5 hours between runs I'd be tempted to go midway with maybe 1.5 hours after one run and 2 hours before the next.

The other thing that may help is some science. If you have a good set of scales then you can work out how much you weigh at the start of a run, how much you weigh at the end and how much fluids you have taken on and so how much you have lost. A friend did this recently and was loosing about 6 pounds of sweat on a 15 mile run in this heat so over 50 km  runs that is 12 pounds or 5.5 litres.

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭

GM! Sorry to hear about your family troubles. Life can be crappy. Hope things brighten up for you soon.

Minni and MsE - top 24hr-ing. Podium finish and spewing too - niiiice.

Dont have it in me to write a report yet I'm afraid - had 2 hrs sleep last night which isn't much on the back of a 3am start the day before. Still feeling like a champ though image

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭

Oh, as for long distance fuelling. One word...... Practice......and experience - damn it, that's 3 words.

  • Ironmen and 24 hour endurance runs are all very well.  But I'm afraid I've just knocked them all into a cocked hat with my own momentous PB, achieved this very afternoon.

3 chin-ups on my pull-up bar.  I didn't think I'd ever manage 3 in one go.  Next stop, three and a half.

Very impressed with Minni and MsE.  And I loved MsE's observation that, 'if we'd done some training, we would have been better.'

Great stuff, Slokey.  The leg-shaving clearly works wonders.

Sorry to hear that, GM.  I hope you're okay.

  • VTrunnerVTrunner ✭✭✭

    Whoa, this thread moves fast.

First, great racing to Marrows, PMJ, SB, Minni, MsE, and OO (as always!). SB, heat (like speed) kills. But seems you still found yourself in a good place fitness-wise. And SJ, you win the ironman award. Have no reference other than that is a fast marathon time after all the other and you finished well in front of the pack. Well done!

Leslie, can you remind me when you event is? I bet you'll have time. And hope you are feeling better soon.

GM, I feel for you. It's one of my worst fears. Keep the faith and run your a$$ off in the mean time.

TAR, very impressive. I say make it an even 4 next time!

Last week got in 54 miles including a subLT run (13M w/10 @6:55 ave pace) and a very comfy 18M LSR. Legs felt great all week and think I've just about got all systems back up and running. The plan this week will be 2 subLT sessions and a LSR, then the following week 1 subLT and a progressive LR. Hopefully I get up to 20 mile LR distance in good shape. Then can recover and have another couple of 3 week cycles before taper.

  • TRTR ✭✭✭

GM - crap ! sorry to hear that.

SJ - nice one, sub 10:15 next time ? if you can convince the SPO you want another go.

Abbers - one or other of mine is/was playing Sun to Weds so we only have last day tickets, but hopefully the pitch looks like a 5 day pitch.

  • Fish52Fish52 ✭✭✭

Minni & MsE - Great stuff on the Thunder Run and cracking podium photo.

Minni - I've not really got much to add to the eating and drinking advice, but learning through trial and error is about right. Many years ago, I kept my going on long alpine mountaineering/climbing missions (often 20 hours+) with cheese and jam sandwiches, cut into quarters. I'd put a few in each of my pockets (jacket, rucsac, salopettes) to munch when there was chance. Not sure how well they'd work at the Thunder Run though!

Marrows - Have you ever tried 1200, 1000, 800, 600, 400, 200 (with 200 jog recovery) and running each rep at a faster pace than the last?

VT - Nice mileage and planning cycle

Gerard - I am sorry to hear of your situation. Putting it out on the forum is a brave thing to do. Running is your constant so I hope that you continue to find solace in it
