I did the Ultra this year, which is basically the marathon route with a few extra miles in the middle, course is best described as 'undulatingly hilly' but nothing to be afraid of. (except for the last hill up to the finish )
I did the half this year and am booked for the ultra in 2015. It's glorious countryside and cracking organisation with lots of quirky details. Highly recommended.
I've only ever done portsmouth marathon but have a place next year for London.
over the last couple of years myself and 3 friends have been doing some team races, Gurkha Trailwalker and this year the Southdowns Marathon relay, we are looking for something like this, we're not fast so it would be to get round!
Thanks for the profile, I'm off this morning for a run on the Southdowns
Zoe the great thing about White Star events is that there is a huge spread of all abilities with a real long cut off time, and it's all about enjoying the journey, you will have a great day out.
Glad to hear the positive thoughts on this one. Am stepping up from marathons (my last was Avebury-Stonehenge) and thought, as it was local, about giving this one a go.
Frog is right too Zoe we realise that not everyone is an elite (like me )
Our cut offs are set up to include anyone who can get round its a whole day out and we wont take the finish line down before everyone finishes...that bloody annoys me at races
A further recommendation for White Star from me. I did The Giants Head in 2013. Brilliant group of people, great craic at the race, and great support. Oh, and a Lovestation with wine, vodka, cider and cake!! And hugs
I have just entered this. Who else is in? It will be my first Ultra. Was going to do the Brecon to Cardiff one but picked this as the reviews are good and there is free cider and grub at the end. Result!
I'm following a beginner plan from "relentless forward progress" by Bryon Powell, the irunfair guy. It has back to back weekend long runs and modest runs on tue/wed/thu so that fits around my life quite well. I can send you the plan if you pm me your email addy.
Goldie - have you thought about creating a Strava group for your runners so we can see what training runs others are doing?

The Ox isnt as hard as the Giants Head the topography is different the valleys aren't as deep as Sydling and Cerne its more rolling
its odd the scenery is quite different although they are only 20 miles apart as the crow flies

Some good feedback,
can I ask with trail marathons how do people figure how to train, lots of distance with some hills or distance with hills?
I always tried to train over similar terrain
Back to back days of hard training helps so hard parkrun on a saturday then long slow hilly run the next day to condition you to fatigue
I also train for time and not distance
I always thought hilly trail races take longer so its time on the feet that is important physically
Mentally going over 20 miles is a mountain to climb
Plenty of cake and cider with these guys and the famous Love station!
Cake + Cider = a good day out
so want to fgit at least one of these races in my calender next year.... will have to wait what the year brings... I loved the gianthead this year...

My first ultra too
Nice one! What does your training plan look like?
Ox Half awarded 6th Bset half in uk in its first year
Not bad after seeing the competition

Will do Frogbmth, that would be useful. I am running VLM as well so am trying to work out best way to train for both and still get a mara PB.
Goldbeetle - saw that too, which is what persuaded me to take the plunge!

Sent it over Ruffles, hope it helps
Can't find it on Strava Goldenballs, but I am a bit of a technotard.

Thanks so much Frogbmth!
