Some good efforts there, and nice prizewinning/placing from the Lorenzi.

TAR - nice location to stay and a sensational beach to run on. How are you planning to get from the finish back to base?

GFA confirmation for London arrived today - anyone else still waiting?

I'm thinking that if I can get through the injury situation and carry on with the maras I will need a GFA renewal - and would prefer not to leave this till VLM. So looking for a reasonably fast mara in Nov or Dec or maybe Feb/Mar - any thoughts? Not sure I can cope with the Shakespeare airfield experience again. Training will be limited due to work which also puts Oct & Jan out of the equation.

  • Phew, we're on the next page! Thanks for the brief round-up Poacher, although it was your fault in the first place! How about the Town Moor, that's November ish isn't it?

  • I've not got anything about my GFA place yet image

  • Nice 10k result PMJ.

Good to get on the podium MsE and sounds a tough “challenging race”. Have you cyber stalked the phantom winner?

7.18 pace is a decent pace GDawg to be chatting away - a good sign of fitness.

No chance of a Comrades entry just yet Lorenzo, maybe in the future when I'm 50? I've got a 24 hour race coming up in September that I've entered as a solo runner. A good result & time in your 10k, sounds great with the mixture of terrain. Good that the whole family got involved too and there was wine in the mix too.

Poacher, there is the Maravan in Cleethorpes on 21 & 22nd November. 7 laps of a caravan park?

  • PoacherPoacher ✭✭✭

CC - sorry about that but it is hanging in a tantalising way and cried out for a photo. I know you are the queen of the Town Moor, it could be a fast course but for the horizontal sleet and the 5 x ascents of the Evil Grassy Hill.

KR - see you in Durban image

The Maravan sounds more interesting that the Shakespeare airfield and is the annual outing for the North East Marathon Club of which I'm proud to be a member. Thinking about it.

The sad, and unique, thing is that I am possibly the only athlete in history to spend substantial amounts of time attempting to train in E Africa and actually become much slower and fatter as a result.  Hence the need for a fast race in the UK. Don't want to leave it to Pompey in Dec, or even the Dawn to Dusk, that's a mug's game.

Lorenzo - have you checked out flights to Dbn for 2016? image

  • Gul DarrGul Darr ✭✭✭

PMJ - very tidy 10k - things are slowly looking up. Meant to say nice bar chart too.
GD - top lunchtime running again.
TAR - it's only one "hill", if you can call it that. Training for Poacher's favourite mara, the Autumn Shakespeare. I loved the Spring one so much that I thought I'd return to repeat it in the wind and the rain this time. Don't think I'll be tempted to join the Maravanimage
Lorenzo - sounds like a great family day out for the 10k.
18 miles at silly o'clock this morning. 9 miles out @ 8:39 m/m avg/max HR 141/168 and 9 miles back @ 7:52 m/m avg/max HR 159/211(?!) Strange reading again - is it the heart rate strap or is it me?!

  • MsEMsE ✭✭✭

Gul - isn't it just a function of rising uber early and your body taking time to warm up (as well as the heart rate)?  I sometimes get up when I am barely awake to run and am definitely half asleep until the homeward leg.

Lorenzo - I can't check it out as the results aren't up yet so I think the organisers are checking it all out themselves as one of our club members had a quiet word.  There was also another category winner which seemed a bit unusual who wasn't at the awards ceremony.  Would happily take 3rd but I am fairly sure only my team mate was ahead of me.

10 easy yesterday around Effingham and Ockham as MsEsq was paint balling with a group of his mates in the area. I took particular care around the woods which I heard are popular for, erm, doing stuff.  Unfortunately, my rickety right ankle rolled on a particularly divoty (is that a word?) bridlepath so I am now compressed wondering whether to bother recovery running today or not.  It's the last day of term so I am tempted to squeeze in that last run of freedom before the summer holidays begin! After all, you are meant to keep moving according to current advice aren't you?

  • Yes, MsE - definitely keep moving.  Unless that makes it worse.  In which case, stop moving around, you loon.  You're making it worse.

KR - 24 hour solo run?  Ouch.  Are you sure that's entirely necessary?

Poacher - my dedicated support team will be on hand to drive me to the start line, collect me at the finish and then feign interest as I drone on about my coastal adventure.  As you can imagine, they're looking forward to it immensely.

  • Poacher, if you are using Maravan as a good for age I would check with the organisers to see if it counts to a GFA for london - don't see why not, but worth an email.

Good negative split ;ong run there Gul.

Might be worth a gentle outing MsE to check - coulb be just stiff and need loosening?

TAR - it's a challenge so defo worth it.

  • MsEMsE ✭✭✭

OK I checked with a 3 mile recovery run and that was enough to tell me I need to ditch tomorrow's long run and take the first half of next week's recovery week off.  Yoga, barre and pilates [/insert activity to reduce jitteriness induced by lack of running] here I come!

MsE - I wondering more why my heart rate should reach 211bpm for 7:52m/m! Sorry to hear you're on the bench - I'm sure it will be a very short spell.
Leslie - be patient and take care of that knee now.
8 slow miles d&d. Quads sore but 67 miles for the week completed.

18.03 at the parkrun today for a 3rd. Was closing down on 2nd but ran out of path..

Sounds like a high hr Gul?

  • SlokeyJoeSlokeyJoe ✭✭✭
Dodgy HRM or poor skin contact Gul. Make sure you wet the contact patches a bit (a quick lick does the trick). Plus, these things aren't always that accurate.

Sorry to hear about the benching MsE

    Fast again OO!

Great racing from the Lorenzo clan

I'm sure your support crew love every minute of it TAR. That's what I always tell myself about mine despite their murmurings.

    Good target KR....
  • Poacher - have I checked the flights for 2016 yet? Er, no.

MsE - hope there's nothing too serious with the ankle. Sounds like resting it is the best option. You're right - you could have had an eventful run; I know that area (by reputation, not personal experience!) and while it's great to run in (the monthly MABAC run takes place there in December), there are a few too many cars in the car park after it gets dark.

Gul - I suspect that there was something up with the HRM to record 211. When I ran with one, I used to find that in hot / dry weather it went a bit funny. Good weekly mileage BTW - hope you're being sensible and not over stressing your body.

OO - great parkrunning from you. Is that close to a PB?

Pleasing parkrun for me this morning - moderately rolling Nonsuch Park course and managed 19:29, my fastest time for over a year. Younger Lorenzito managed 6th overall in a time of about 17:45 (new PB for him) so he was pretty chuffed as well.

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭

Brilliant effort by the Lorenzo boys! My junior had a day off- she is doing a 5k road race on Wednesday and hoping to break 18 mins which might be a bit ambitious.

Bout 15 secs off my best parkrun time Lorenzo but good enough for a Wava 83%

  • Leslie HLeslie H ✭✭✭

0052- you just have to find 4 secs now  keep up the good work image

Gul_ I always get silly hr numbers for a couple of mins at the start then it slows down as the sweat gets going to make proper contact though on a good day I can get very close to 200 bpm .You are cranking out big miles week after week great too see. image

Lorenzo- nice parkrun ,junior sure is getting fast !image

Just waiting for a chat with a knee specialist about my mri and hopefully some sort of comeback plan image Keeping myself busy doing things in the meantime.

TAR - turn those experiences into a blog - the world will want to read about your exploits.

Nice Parkruns today, esp. Lorenzo jr who is absolutely flying.  Thinking of which, check those flights.  OO must be set for a very quick one next weekend if the tide and wind behave.

Orpington Parkrun for me, decided to go for it and see how rusty things are. I was suffering after only a mile and came home for 9th in 20.36 which is not where one would like to be but it's a step in the right direction. Pretty hard effort, and a lot of work now to get fit. The body held together though.

Gul - not sure about those readings, I once got the HRM up to 213 without dying. Surely it's an anomaly to go as high as you did.  Also, what was it that you liked about the airfield mara? Was it a bit like running round your legendary field??  Too many 90 degree turns surely.

MsE - look after that - ankles can be so tricksy

Leslie - while incapacitated in the leg area I've been kayaking - good exercise and can get tastily aerobic if you put some effort in. Worth a try if you live near water.

  • OO54OO54 ✭✭✭
We have a very good squad Poacher turning up for the Coastal. I will do well to get a counting position for the team competition. A top 20 finish would be good....hope to see u there.

Bike it - Great session and it's definately worth adding fast running to your schedule. The only way to get faster is to run faster image

Jools - Brilliant reps in your 9 miler.

    Poacher - Yuke!

SJ - Good progress, great to hear

KR- Good pace for a 11.5 miler

PMJ - Super sub 39 and target hitting in your 10k

GD - Nice pace for a comfortable 5 miler

Gul - Great 18 miler and I'd say it's the strap. It happens to me too

MsE - Well done with your podium finish. Wise decision taking it easy after your unfortunate injury

OO - Brilliant Parkrun faster than my PB. You should be targeting a sub 2:50 marathon for Autumn!

Lorenzo - Great 10k and Parkrun with the family excelling even more

Leslie - Good luck with the knee

    Poacher - Good comeback Parkrun

I ran the Titanic 10k this morning starting and finishing at the Titanic docks. The organisation of the race was a shambles including a late start by 40 minutes and only 2 port-a-loos for 800 people. A half marathon started five minutes before the 10k which wasn't great either as I had to swerve in and out of all the slower HM runners for the first 3 1/2 miles.

I spoke to an American guy at the start line who told me he was hoping to run about 33 to 35 minutes while I was going to be happy with anything sub 40. The race finally started and within minutes a group of four guys including the yank started pulling away from a group I was leading. We turned into a head wind and I was overtaken by two other guys. This worked out well though as I was able to sit in behind them and finish the first mile in 6:24. We maintained this pace for the next half mile then turned with the wind at our backs and I moved back into 5th with a 6:10 mile.

The next mile had a tail wind which took me 5:54. I wasn't sure due to the number of HM runners I was passing but I thought I overtook another 10k runner around half way. We turned back into the wind and I ran 6:14 and I was closing in on another runner. As we were heading back to the finish the HM runners were no longer an issue.

There were two guys tailing me so I really pushed on trying to break them into the wind. This worked well as I heard them drop back and I overtook the guy ahead. That mile took 6:08 and we turned away from the head wind and I knew I was either 3rd or 4th. The next runner was about 50 m ahead and I was closing -  but slowly. In the last half mile there was a 180 turn and I saw the yank leading coming the other direction. I was well pleased to see no one else apart from the guy now only about 30 m ahead of me.

I pushed on hard and the gap continued to close but agonisingly slowly. I got to about 15 m behind as I finished the 6th mile in 6:03. Unfortunately I ran out of race about 10 m behind him but was chuffed with my 37:37 finish and 3rd place overall. I'm told a cash prize will be posted out.

My Garmin measured the course 6.13 miles so either it was short or my splits might have been a few seconds a mile faster. Either way I'm very happy with this performances considering my weight gain and loss of fitness during my holidays. I also ran over 7 miles before the race and 10 miles the day before including a 19:30 Parkrun.

Next Saturday I've a HM race but not before a nice wee 21 miler planned for Tuesday!image

Good to see some good Parkruns being done this weekend.

Nice report Badbark and an excellent race and result. You've got to be pleased with that after your holidays.

Sorry to hear about your niggles MsE. Hopefully nothing too serious. Thanks for the yoga tips. I started on flexibility and mobility for now

A steady 12km yesterday and an easy 20km this morning. Pleased that I managed to control both distance and speed of today's run. Next speed session Tuesday.

The university semester starts tomorrow and I get out the pointy stick for lecturing again.

*Gasp*...got out from under at work (finally!). Sorry for the long absence but I've been in the trenches finishing up big projects. Lost some miles in June as just couldn't get out as I'd like (but still manged 230 for the month), but came back 2 wks ago with a 77 mile week and just logged 68  miles this week. Got a 20 and 17 mile LR to cap these weeks as well. Strange training going on. My HR keeps dropping on my lower paced runs, while I seem to be plateaued on my subLT efforts (but then again it's been super hot on these and it's hard to judge effort as I keep HR in the right range but the weather cannot be controlled). So things have been good but been feeling some weirdness in left foot (right in the area of my last injury which was a SF/SR type thing). It was more noticeable yesterday after  a 7 miler than today after 17 so hoping I'm not broken. Will try wearing compression socks round the clock for a few days as this eliminated this feeling as I made my comeback. Anyway, I'm rambling. Good to be above water again.

Leslie, really gutted to hear your news. Hang in there and I look forward to Leslie2.0 (which I'm sure will unveil in top form!). MsE, take care of that ankle. And great racing from so many of you recently. Top form!!

OO - superfast parkrun. WAVA 83% is going some!
Lorenzo - nice parkrun. And very impressive PB for Lorenzito!
Leslie - hope the knee specialist can come up with a plan.
Poacher - steady and sure wins the day. Re HR, I could understand a very high reading if I were flat out for a reasonable stretch, but it was only MP+10% effort! As for the airfield, I guess I get lots of practice at 90 degree turns!
Badbark - congrats on the cash prize and podium finish - great report too.
Bike It - coming along nicely.
VTr - good to hear from you. Nice mileage, just take care of that foot.
Thanks for all the tips re chest strap HRM - I do wet the contact before putting it on although the watch does occasionally lose HR during the run. I obviously to try harder so that the sweat maintains the contactimage
My  body must have noted Lorenzo's word of caution and I overslept this morning. So just 9 miles with 10x100m strides. First 4 miles around 9m/m | 145bpm and last 5 (inc. strides) around 8m/m | 160bpm. Max HR today was 190.
P.S. I am enjoying filling the world with pointless statsimage

  • Great going Madbark - super speedy!!

Good to hear from you again VTr. Sounds as though you've been busy on all fronts.

    Overslept until when Gul? 4.30am?!!

Managed to get out yesterday for my longest run post-Comrades so far; all of 8 miles, but it was a good mix of on and off road, and pretty hilly to boot. Spent most of the day at a Junior Athletics meeting with a good day rounded off by younger Lorenzito making a break from home at the bell in the 1500m and winning in a massive PB of 4:28. At least I still hold bragging rights for all distances of 10K and above. image

Rest day today as I was up early for a day trip to Hartlepool. Work not leisure!

Poacher-thanks I will have to do something soon as the weight is piling on, fear of open water /drowning though plus bad currents in the local river means kayaking is off limits image I've free gym access through work though so may use that.image

Badbark-3rd place in a big race is excellent shame it was badly organised image

Bike it -good luck with the lecturing image

VTR-good month for you image , just be careful with that foot image I hope to be back but I won't get any faster until I get some sort of fix for my knee if that doesn't happen my mara days are probably over and I will stick to shorter distances.

Gul- we all love stats !

Lorenzo- junior is getting fast ! enjoy the bragging while you can image

    3 mile walked !

Crikey that is great mileage despite bring under the cosh at work, VTr! When's your next big race?

    OO - super paces there.

Nice parkrunning from Poacher proving knees are overrated.

Lorenzo - your boy is developing serious wheels!

Badbark - loved the report and sound racing there. You obviously thrive on the adrenaline of competition.

A gentle 8 miler at 7:40/mi today on flat terrain to test the ankle,

Badbark - I see the Belfast half marathon/10k just made the news for being a bit sh*te , apparently the 1/2 mara was a 1/2 mile short image and this was only one of quite a few failings ,..How hard is it to get the course distance right in this day and age of gps etc.
