GNR transport before race

Hi all - I'm looking for any information on how to get from the finish line to the start line on Sunday. I have a mate who's staying in South Shields for the weekend, and he's planning to get himself from there to the start line on Sunday morning. He's heard that there may be specific buses running, does anyone know anything about these? - are they real? where would he catch them? cost?

Failing that, any recommendations on the best way to get to the start area? Metro? Regular buses?
