Hi All,
I have a mate who wants me to do the London to Brighton ultra on the weekend of 28/29th May. I have another mate who wants me to do IM Maastricht on July 31st (well that's not strictly true, he wants to do a European IM branded race and there's only that, Lanza (too hilly) and Vichy (too late) ).
Is it possible to recover from an ultra and do an Ironman in 2 months? I've done a couple of Iron distance races already, so I know the training involved. I suspect the training plan would need to be heavier on the run before the ultra and heavier on the bike afterwards.

Possible? yes
Doable? Probably
There are oodles of European IM races out there - not just the three you mention
If you are not desperate for a time in whichever one you choose then you may just get away with it. IF you get injured in training or in the event itself, you need to ask yourself how disappointed would you be and can you afford to 'lose' the money you have spent
There are lots of european IM branded races
Nice
Austria
Frankfurt
Switzerland
Holland
Sweden
Mallorca
Barcenlona
And Lanza is not that hilly
Yeah ... but half of them have sold out
Tom ... get yourself to Maastricht
What WW said.
as long as you are not racing full out at the ultra then you should be fine./
do a long run either after your long bike..or the day after the long bike.........for ultras you need to spend hours running on tired legs....a bit like on an ironman run..
but you need to keep the pace of the runs slow......
if you want to race both flat out then you are taking a risk..
I have no personal experience.
However a close friend who is a multiple Marathon finisher, did the London-Brighton Ultra which I believe is unsupported and much of it is off road?
He was in pieces for at least two weeks afterwards
It's apparently 60% off road, but does have full support. Point taken though.....
Is it the Action Challenge event? If so it is really well supported, but some of it is very off-road - clambering over thick tree roots, and picking your way down very steep wooded, difficult terrain ... its a fantastic event, excellent signposting - with lots of glow sticks at night time ... I guess recovery would depend how hard you tried - if you walked a lot, which is fine, since its predominantly a walking event ... I guess recovery would be a lot quicker, but get a really good head lamp for the night time bit!
