  • I finally managed to get back on the bike.
A short but sweet 30 minutes, then realised why it had been hard to try to keep the cadence at a sensible pace, the resistance setting on the turbo had been knocked to make it much harder than usual.

Who managed to get a place for the Ride London 100 mile ride in the summer?

  • well done steady - I have made similar mistakes with the turbo: not making sure the tyre was pumped up, and once there was a laptop case leaning against the rear wheel!!

I failed to get up and run before swimming this morning, but never mind. Have stage 8 of the tour of sufferlandria later.....my legs are not very happy but getting used to it!

I didn't enter the ballot for Ride London - I just see those events as too much hassle to get there and back!

  • MC you are right about the hassle of getting to and from the event, last year I got a taxi there at huge expense but the train home.

  • I did lol Steady! Now I have to add that into the training plan! image Rest day today LSR tomorrow 9miles in the hills.

  • Well I have had a bit of a streak..... 3 days of cycling, Friday a short steady turbo, yesterday afternoon 1 hour interval session, then this morning I decided that as the sun was shining and Mr Steady was going to work in the garage with the doors wide open, that I might as well get on the old road/commuting bike. 50 minutes later done.  Tomorrow will be my usual rest day though.

Buttercup, I have seen a sportive on 4th June up near you, would you be interested in doing it as the last really long ride before the 100. (Said so confidently that I will be fine by then and faster.)

  • good to see folk getting stuff done.

With my huge commute I'm struggling to find time/energy to run in the evenings.  Currently I'm just training at the weekends or doing an official run.  My times are coming down...24.16minutes for last weekends 5k, but my stamina is rubbish...4 people over took me in the last 1km.  I'm going to try and schedule a Wednesday night run to help with stamina.

Did I mention that we had to put the aircon on yesterday...its starting to hot up here.

  • pete - it is getting colder here! Well done on the 5k time.

I have a cold so am doing  very little, I did have a trip to a spa at the weekend - a late birthday pressie because I couldn't get booked in around my birthday

I had some kind of virus that knocked me out so 2 weeks of no cycling to work. First time yesterday but volleyball training tired me out in the evening and no cycling today. Will be back on the bike tomorrow.

  • HI all, still pluggin away but did have a week off, the net result of that was a more sore knee! So I've bitten the bullet and thanks to my company's health insurance I'm seeing an orthopedic surgeon on Tuesday.

Does anyone know anything about arthritis on the back of the knee caps? My physio is keen that they don't operate as there seems to be a debate about how much it really improves things. So currently I'm hoping for scans to diagnose what is really going on plus a steroid injection to try and calm things down. But I'd be happy to hear anyone else's experience?

  • Ali - I am sure the orthopedic consultant won't operate if it isn't necessary. When I had loads of knee issues a few years ago the mri showed some osteoarthritis in the knee, but in fact the consultant didn't see anything that was fixable by surgery and referred me for physio. I did find the nhs physio wasn't actually that good and it took me a while to find a physio who did actually find the cause of my pain/issues, and it wasn't the arthritis causing it! I imagine the ortho will refer you for an mri so he/she can see what might be going on

I have had a virus all week, am feeling rubbish and have done nothing. Crappy half term and so frustrating that there have been some beautiful sunny days but I haven't felt up to doing anything

half marathon on Sunday, but not sure I will make it image

  • An Orthopaedic surgeon is simply an Ortho specialist. Either registrar or Consultant. They may suggest MRI etc. to discover what the problem may be. They have a tendency not to dive straight into surgery. Unless they think an arthroscopy is the way to have a look!

  • Been a while since I've been on here!

Last week did a 57 mile sportive in the lakes, the Cumbrian Cracker from Grasmere. Lovely route with some challenging climbing, kicking off with the 25% beast that is Red Bank within the first mile, so no chance to get warmed up before it. Took some pride in riding up it when plenty of others were off and pushing, but my heart was pounding when I got to the top.

The route then went along the shore of Coniston Water and took us down to Cartmel for the feed stop, before taking in another couple of climbs on the way back. Lovely day for it, blue skies but freezing, and the snow didn't start until we crossed the finish.

This week has been rubbish, tried running twice and failed both times. Got about 200 yards on Tuesday before ankle pain made me turn back, and an attempt at 4 miles on Thursday had me stopping at 1.5 miles due to feeling generally ropey. Off out in 30 mins to have a crack at a long, steady run so fingers crossed!

  • Managed 13.2 miles in 2:21:33. Felt great at times, like crap at others

  • well done DB on both the sportive and today's run

I had a little run/walk, have been unwell all week but needed to get out in the fresh air and do something

was supposed to be doing a half mara tomorrow but just don't feel well enough so the first DNS of the year image  have another in 2 weeks though so just need to get well enough and back to fitness for that

  • Better to be recovered and up for it MC.

Felt worse when I got in from my run, and worked out why. Hadn't eaten enough before going out, and only took 3 gels whilst out. Got home and spent an hour and a half feeling nauseous and ropey as owt. Burnt about 2,7500 calories on the run and taken on nowhere near that during the day so hardly surprising that I needed food.

  • DB, at least you worked out your reasons for feeling bad.
MC hope you are having a rest day today and recovering properly.

I have been out on the bike, a touch breezy but it stayed dry, loads of cyclists about. I managed 16 miles, (OMG how am I going to do  100) but at 12mph. Feel tired and my Garmin states used 930 cals, so a piece of cake for recovery purposes will be consumed.
Does anyone take notice of the TE (training effect) on garmin connect?
Today it was 5.0 which is over reaching, I try to get 3 or 4 which is the improving range. I hope that having got a 5 today does not mean I have overdone it too much and will  be wiped out for the rest of the week.

  • Cake is good recovery food. I used crumpets and Milky Bar Buttons, but was at the point when eating was hard work, even though it's what I needed to do to recover. Little bites until I was able to wolf the rest down. Then 5 pints of fizzy recovery fluid at a local hostelry...

  • CJ - the 5 TE on garmin probably reflects that you were having to work harder in the wind.

Not exactly a restful day - visiting inlaws and shopping etc. Still feel incredibly fatigued so no exercise. Haven't got much of an appetite either but will make sure I cook a good hearty meal tonight.

  • Hospital tomorrow, but a week back on swim and bike and I can do stairs without crying which is definite plus.image  Although a pull bouy is required for swimming but I wouldn't be the only Pirate to do that image

  • CJ,

TE on Garmin confuses me too!  I think it uses an "algorythmy" thing which also factors in how much more than last time you did along with HR and other stuff, so a 5.0 could simply mean you cycled twice as far as last time!  It certainly does this with me if I drop the run distance down one week and then go out for a longer one even though HR is within Z2.

  • Thanks Effing Madness, that makes some sense, although the previous session had 4.9 and the one before that which was only 20 minutes shorter was 3.5. I will keep an eye on it.

Good to hear you are on the mend Alibear.

  • I have been eating far too much chocolate!

Feeling better now though so running etc will start again tomorrow

  • I like chocolate.

Did a run on Saturday and then took the brat out on sunday and we cycled for a couple of hours, mostly off road and stopped for an icecream.  Saw the local bike club out on their very expensive bikes.  I waved as I ate my icecream.  lol.

It's good to hear that folk are getting out there and doing stuff.

Good luck Ali with the knee stuff

  • Morning everyone!  I've been keeping an eye on this thread for a while now and thought now is as good a time as any to join in.

A couple of months ago I had a mini midlife crisis and signed up to a sprint triathlon, booked on some swimming lessons, started couch to 5k and dusted off my bike.

I'm now on week 6 of my home made training plan and it's going ok.  I'm taking it slowly at the moment, but hoping to improve over time and get a bit faster.

I'm hoping that joining in here will give me a kick up the backside to stick to the plan even when it's raining!

  • Welcome Mrs Lollipop, just keep doing some training in each sport to start with. Which race have you signed up for? Then we can help you along more and keep any nerves to a minimum just before.

I have swum today, not as far as the session last week, but nearly. Aiming to do a turbo session on Thursday, hopefully the smell of gearbox oil will have gone from the garage by then.

  • welcome Mrs Lollipop - which sprint tri are you doing?

first early morning run for a while today, under a beautiful full moon. image

  • It's the Cheshire sprint triathlon in May. It seemed ages away and plenty of time to train but it's creeping closer. I did a run this morning and finally felt like I was getting faster, so hopefully the training's starting to pay off.
  • Welcome! Just do a bit of everything and enjoy it. Races have a habit of creeping up out of nowhere when you thought they were aaaages away. Manchester Marathon is starting to look very close now...

  • Hi Mrs L, welcome to the madhouse image

DB your right mate the Manchester Marathon will be on top of us before we know it.image

Got out for a run today with Horse, first run for 10 days for both of us managed just over 4 miles at a steady pace avg 10:11 so I'm happy with that and felt good.
