high blood pressure

i am a 41 year old and have just resumed training for a marathon. Since my last marathon 4 years ago, I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure which I am on medication for. Do any other runners suffer from this and if so, does it affect your running/training?

Hi Mark Mr FE is on medication for high blood pressure. When diagnosed ( a couple of years ago at the age of 41) he was very fit and not over weight.

Apart from a brief spell while he was getting his blood pressure sorted he is now running as well as ever. I think it depends on the type of medication you are on. Does your Doctor know you run?

I have just seen this and I am wondering the outcome ? I used to be a long distance runner and ran a marathon on 10 mg rampril then I got an injury stopped running and my BP went up so now I'm on Amolodphine 5mg as well , it's been 2 years off not running and I really want to get back into it but I'm nervous as I've put on 1 1-2 stone and on 2 meds , the doctors never give me straight answer some say it's ok to run and others say no think it depends if they agree with running it not ! I feel more tired since taking the second tablet but this could be to do with loosing fitness !

Wow. 11 years since the last post !

I'm on verap and argenin (need to check that last one) and they don't affect my running. Unfortunately.

I would have loved something that made me faster.

If your doctor tells you that you can't run then ask for different meds. There's 1000's of people who run with high blood pressure. It shouldn't stop you.

Hello no as I've been working s lot but I'm walking a lot . I have been watching what I eat and lost 8lbs but I have been getting heart palpitations or something when I walk uphil but doc thinks it's wind but I'm not convinced as he only asked a few questions so reluctant to start until they go away . If I had the money I'd have a proper sports health check then I think I would feel more confident ! I need to sort it out , I have friends who are older than me (47) who are still running I want to get back to that ! Let me know how you get on ?

I'm no Doctor but i wouldn't think there could be a connection between wind and palpitations :-/ Any Docs on here?

Yes I know I think I need a 2nd opinion , they have gone for the last few days , I just spoke to friend who's a sports massage person and she said it could be low blood sugar , I think I'll go back to docs and check if it's ok to exercise !

No no caffeine what so ever , it has almost stopped my migraines ! Which is great so it's not that ! Almost tee total as well and don't smoke
