Hi guys,
Looking to make the step up from half-marathon to marathon distance in the spring then to ultra marathon next summer (Race to the Stones).
Im already looking at backpacks and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations towards the budget end around £40 mark?

+1 for decathlon. Great value.
if spending lots off pennies Ultimate Direction and Solomon seem highly regarded.
OMM for midpriced rugged but more basic.
Raidlight for mid priced ones that are padded so slightly heavier but comfortable.
Also don't be afraid to go for traditional non running ru smacks as comfort is key, Deuter etc... do good comfortable rucksacks that are fine,
OMM 12 litre available for about £40 and pretty good.
Not sure if you are male or female but if you are female in particular I would try on as many as you can. I found that some of the ones recommended to me did not fit very well over my assets! The ones with bottles at the front in particular were uncomfortable so I ended up going for one with a bladder at the back. I am not sure if the blokes have the same problem
Both of mine are Camelbak (purchased in sales) but the Decathalon ones have good reviews.
+1 on the 'try it on' - particularly if you are female. Some of them the chest strap is in a very uncomfortable place, if you're female...
I am using this from Decathlon.

It is for men, but has a woman edition as well.
used a few in the past omm and cheaper decathlon versions.best one in current use is the innov8 race ultra theres a 5 or 10 ltr . incredibly comfortable .cant recommend enough .its on sale if you shop about .
I've got an Ultimate Direction one. It does have front bottle pockets (plus a thousand other pockets). I use it with a bladder in the pack though. The front bottle pockets I find are useful for gels and stuff. It does adjust well - I can get it tight enough.

Who cares, I'm in it for the medal!
Vest style for me. Prefer fit and ease of access on the go to the backpack style.
I'm doing an 70km ultra in February and need a backpack, any advice on which one to get please, been told Salomon but which one guys, thank you
