Trump

The old US election / Trump thread hasn't survived the transition. This presidency seems set to test the boundaries of social cohesion, truth, competency, rule of law, free press, liberal democracy, reality and handshaking. Nearly one month down.
Current ongoing crisis/scandal: Russia Russia Russia and the White House and intelligence agencies leaking like a sieve

    God bless America.

    🙂

  • You do know the New York Times makes the Guardian look like the Daily Mail with it's political leanings.
  • Funny that. Trump is looking like he won't survive either at this rate. Two Twitter meltdowns in as many days. I have popcorn...

That's a bit of a push. It is equivalent with the Guardian. It's not the Socialist Worker. That said a moderate "centre way" through current US political events is hard to find. It's near impossible to achieve right now.  The dissonance and discrepancy emanating from the White House almost doesn't allow it. Even Fox, while broadly supportive, is asking difficult questions. Meanwhile the NYTimes and Washington Post are becoming a public outlet for the concerns of the security services.

The pick for labour secretary has stood down. Andrew Puzder had enough controversy around him concerning his treatment of staff as chief exec of fast food chains. The tin hat on it was the release by Politico of an Oprah Winfrey episode in which his ex-wife talked about domestic abuse. Accusations she has since rescinded.

it's not the equivalent of the guardian unless it's owned by offshore tax dodgers, yet still rails against anyone who doesn't identify with socialism.

Trump called a press conference yesterday.
It's gradually dawning on him that the role of president isn't quite as powerful a position as he thought it was.

    🙂

  • This morning BBC News broadcast clips of Trump banging on about 'dishonest media' and then immediately described it as an attack on the press.  Kinda proving his point, folks.

It proves his point only if you already accept as true Trump's statement that negative media coverage is dishonest and fake. And I'm using the word "prove" here entirely incorrectly.
  • The point I was making (perhaps badly) was that he was including all media outlets and the BBC misquoted him to specify just the newspapers and exclude themselves.  They've got previous on this - every time there's an uproar over how something is portrayed or misrepresented by 'the media', their coverage will focus solely on the press, or FB, anyone but themselves.

Anyway, if what Trump says is true, then the media will have faked what he said, which means it isn't true, therefore the media is honest. Etc.

  • Even The Telegraph says Trump has lost the plot saying his first four weeks has been fights, chaos and dysfunction!

"We had Hillary Clinton give Russia 20 percent of the uranium in our country. You know what uranium is, right? This thing called nuclear weapons like lots of things are done with uranium including some bad things."

    That's really profound, Donald :joy:

The already infamous solo press conference. It's worth watching the whole thing, just to decide for yourself. For me the wheels don't categorically start to come off until the Q&A's.

Fake news!, Post Truth! Social Media and all the associated comments. Trumps having to deal with the fact, situation, that the reality for many people, isn't just the crappy journey to their crappy (if any) job. But the life imagined and constructed by others - namely the press and news outlets.
Lets face it, if you didn't bother reading any news or watching or listening anything broadcast by media outlets, how would you perceive life?
People always believed what they read in the papers. Still do.

The media is full of fake news...apart from those that agree with the Trumpster.
  • I thought this was a bridge thread, oh well

It's been 3 days 19hrs 32min 58 secs since Trump attacked anyone on Twitter.

I wonder how long that's going to last...

    Didn't last too long ...

Turned out it was 4days 8hours 22mins 0secs in the end.

Hopefully his latest accusations will land him in deep shit. I'll not be holding my breath though.

He's a bit like "Teflon Tony" - nothing seems to stick!  I'm of the opinion though that he will eventually land himself in enough trouble to be impeached, may take a while though.  I figure someone, somewhere, will have enough on him to get rid, although they may have to scupper their own career to do it.  Or, if there is any truth in all the Russian rumours that they will have some concrete evidence that they will come out with if he pisses them off.  Time will tell ...

Well Kremlingate isn't going to go away any time soon (notwithstanding his attempts at authoritarian defelection) as in addition to Flynn and Sessions, there looks to be further members of his inner sanctum who had discussions with Russian officials during the 2016 election campaign.

I'd just like to see orange narcissist squirm.
  • He is doing his best with his multiple distractions via Twitter but nobody's buying it.

He'll blow another gasket or two when Hawaii contest his new travel bill and the GOP don't push through his Obamacare replacement.

Did you see the tweet that Obama released 122 (or thereabouts) Gitmo detainees who went back to fight only for it to turn out that Dubya released 113? of them

  • Yes. sImilalry the announcement about Exxon jobs which, apparently, was something agreed under the Obama administration.International Women's Day was the subject he should have stayed well clear of  :D

Trump's also claimed praise for job creation at Ford, Fiat Chrysler (2015), General Motors (2014), Lockheed Martin and Intel (2011). All of which are non attributable to the current administration.

Why let the truth get in the way of a good story though?

I believe the problem isn't necessarily Trump and the lies he spouts, it's the millions of deluded Americans that believe his every word  :|

We were/are friends with an older American couple and we had had a clue of her beliefs when she went on about Obama a couple of years ago, anyway we had dinner with them the night before the election and they were gung-ho 100% Trump supporters, thought Hillary should be in jail etc etc.  We drove back that night and hubby said to me "I don't think we'll bother getting together with them again"

They are so far removed from our way of thinking it sort of marred our friendship which is wrong I guess but that's how we feel.  Actually immaterial to us as we are obviously Brits and nothing to do with us how they vote :)

I also guess his big NRA belt buckle should have given us a clue too ;)

The late Alistair Cooke, 'Letter from America', once said the one mistake the British make about his adopted country men is that they are the same as they are, but with a different accent. They are not.

I was driving down a street just before the election and there was a yard sign (the cardboard posters they stick in their gardens/Yards) and it said 'Women for Trump'  I know there is such people but I felt like stopping the car and getting out and ripping it up   >:)
  • Pretty sure the Trump workers had shed loads of 'Latinos for Trump' 'Blacks for Trump' 'Bisexual Tigers for Trump' printed up (all identical- so not the work of individuals) and handed out at rallys.

There are plenty of pics of old white dudes holding these signs up.

    They're such a sham.
