  • Thank You Jonathan Parsons 7,
I look forward to helping everyone to get under 2:30.
The Red flag on the rucksack says 11:22 a mile and 2:29 finish - gives those following an extra minute to catch up.
At 34 minutes for every 3 miles will get us to 12 miles in 2:16 - then 13 minutes to do the last 1.11 miles - I would prefer 45 minutes for every 4 miles (11:15/mile pace) to allow us an extra minute as we would get to 12 miles in 2:15.
Just curious to know what you guys would like.
(incidentally I paced for 2:15 last week at the Roding Valley Half (tough course) and did 2:13:16 - and this was after a slow start so am quietly happy with my fitness although want to do a sub 2:00 (2:06 at least) in training to make sure.
My objective is just to build on the discipline of running at a metronomically consistent pace so not so fussed about finishing time. 11.15 would be fine for me. See you Sunday.
  • Well, today I did 15 miles which is my longest run yet. Slower than I'd hoped but I went up to London Bridge (I live about 5 miles south) intending to turn left to Tower Bridge, go over that and along the embankment and back home via whichever bridge took my fancy. Which I did but unfortunately a major security alert at London Bridge meant solid crowds i just couldn't find my way out of so I ended up walking more than I needed to. And there's some sort of blockage just west of Tower Bridge on the Northside which meant I had to go 'inland' for quite a while. Still I kept on my feet and possibly could have gone further (though whether I could have *run* further is a different matter). It was fun running through the City though (something I never imagined when I started plodding 4 years ago)

Everyone seems to be going well, which is great ! Harmander, your messages are, as usual really inspiring. I was feeling pretty miserable about turning up on the day because I'm a bit behind on my programme (up to 10 miles last weekend, ticking along at about 12 mins/mile) and I haven't lost as much weight as I would have liked at this stage, but actually, you're right - I could walk it in 8 hours, so anything quicker than that is a bonus - just got to get that medal !
  • Got a couple more runs in and have arranged to meet up with runners from the club on the next two weekends so will be trying to get a bit more distance in than the 8k that I've been doing.  So things moving in the right direction - just time rapidly running out.

Just wanted to check - I assume there is still a final communication to come out in terms of arrangements for collection race numbers etc as I haven't heard anything about that.
  • TopSecTopSec ✭✭✭
PGI, you'll get plenty of communication from VLM, they're pretty good at that.  Basically though, you will have to go to Excel to collect your number on the 3 (or 4) days before the race.  You'll need proof of who you are and your race number in order to collect.  If you're sending someone else they will need written authorisation from you to collect.  If you get a chance to go to the expo it's definitely worth it, loads of things to see (and buy!) and I think you would also get a chance to meet Harmander ;)  I'll be heading up early I think and collecting mine and my niece's and her fiancee's number, they're coming down from Yorkshire so won't arrive until sometime Saturday and would rather have the numbers in my hand than risk train delays or something on Sat!

The just get round mentality works well too, I think people stress too much on getting a good time.  London is a fabulous event but unless you are elite and up at the front it's not necessarily a PB course, there are just too many people.  In saying that though it is my PB course although that doesn't mean it's fast.  I think it is an event to be enjoyed and savoured more than a race.  There's plenty of smaller quieter marathons around the country for a PB, use London for what it is; a great day out :)

    Happy training y'all ;)

  • TopSec,
Could not have said it better myself - maybe the meeting me could have been left out (lol) as it might not be everyone's highlight moment.
To collect someone else's number I believe there is a requirement for their photo id too - not sure but best to check. I also understood that only one number can be picked up not multiples.
    Best check
  • Harmander - I've just spotted there are Run/Walk pacers (though still possibly too fast for me #embarassed). Do you know anything about what they do?
  • SlowTortoise,
Yes they are in fact 5:15 pacers
They tend tou average about 12 minute a mile
  • I am hoping that in about five years time when pacing at 5 hours becomes a bit of a challenge then I will be able to drop to the 5:15 pacer slot until I reach 70.  (Am 57 now)
  • I might well give them a go. Something to aim for anyway. I am in awe of your pacing ability
  • Hello, i'm new. Running the VLM and 1/2 marathon at silverstone this weekend :) Hoping for 2:15 which I managed at the weekend on hills :) Would like to do marathon in 4:30. Started running on 14th October 2016.

Evening all, nice little 7 mile run tonight from work. Wanted to run all the way home as I felt ok and ran just over 9 min a mile. Just need to make sure I run slightly slower on my training runs. 4 miles tomorrow morning then a rest day then 16 which will be my longest run to date
  • messymvddy,
See you at Silverstone on Sunday.
There will be a 2:15 pacer too so you can just stick with him

Smashed my fundraising target over the weekend :-). Done a nice 8.5 miler in the wind last night. Quite a hilly course too so was a tough shift but really enjoyed it. Got a 12 miler this weekend. Nice come down from 16 last week then up to 18 next weekend which I'm looking forward too. Also started listening to podcasts and radio shows rather than music and I'm feeling like it's making a massive difference. Hope everyone is doing well also.
  • Welcome messymvddy.  Hope Silverstone and VLM go well for you.  Well done the fundraising Rossi71.  Going to have to make another push on mine as it's still stuck on a rather poor £60.

I intend to contact the organisers before I turn up at Excel.  Although I will be turning up in person to collect my number on the Saturday, being transgender I will be turning up looking very different to how I look on my driving licence ID so would wish to avoid any difficulties with that if possible.
  • Hope everyone is having a good week? I'm enjoying dropping down for my easy week!

Harmander - I'm doing Retford half - it's a lovely local event but quite a fast field up front. I ran it when I was training for Manchester in 2015. I raced it then but this time I'm running with friends at my marathon pace of around 9.30. If the weather is like it is today it should be fab.

    Enjoy Silverstone everyone :)

  • Another question Harmander (sorry hope you don't mind) - any tips for supporters to stand on route which give good views and are easy transport wise? My two best friends are coming with me but new to London really... Thank you (again) x
  • I was thinking of doing a half before VLM comes round and somehow totally missed Retford half which would have been the nearest one to me.  I notice it did get full back in January though.
  • Where abouts are you PGI?

My friends and I were the last few entrants - only because the guy who organises it grabbed me at parkrun to tell me to get my finger out
  • I'm like that with most races.  At least I did get one of the last places in Woodhall Spa 10k in June this year.  But talk of 10ks is getting off topic.  As you were...

I'm with you Rossi on podcasts/audiobooks.  Music doesn't do it for me as I'm still thinking about how crap I feel, how far I still have to go etc etc but if I get a good audiobook on the go I can get lost in the story.  Can work out expensive though as they are not cheap and when you need 3 or 4 hours at a time you soon rattle through a good book!  I'm on a Ken Follett at the moment and some of those are 30+ hours long :)

This mornings 5 miler was pretty poor and ended up being 4.  Trying to work out whether to drop right back this weekend and just do 12 or so and do my 3/4 marathon next weekend or whether to do 20 this weekend and just do the half next weekend (it's a 4 loop event so plan to drop out on 3rd unless I feel great and do 4)  All these decisions ;)

  • TopSec - loads of excellent podcasts on iTunes, whatever your tastes. You don't need an Apple device - I just download and copy to my player. I', alternating between You Must Remember This about old Hollywood and David Crowther's History of England (I've just got past the Wars of the Roses) . Just had a slight disaster and put my mp3 player through the wash (only a cheapie so not a mega-disaster) and I'm trying the rice trick to save it.

Intend to do 10k tomorrow and 16 at the weekend but we'll see...

I subscribe to quite a number of podcasts but for longer runs prefer the 'continuity' of a good book.  The Archers omnibus used to be a once weekly running treat and it gave me a gentle 10k but I got too addicted and now have to listen every night instead  :)

  • Yes, the Archersisn't quite long enough for a run but I binge on Home Front when it's on
  • PGI - lived in Woodall Spa until I was 4

Hey all, hope everybody is going well with training.  I managed the 18 miler on Sunday, slow & steady and very very wet, but overall it was OK.

Silverstone HM this weekend, so I'll see you there Harmander; I have no request for timing - I'll just follow you for as much as I can.  And see you there to anyone else who is coming.

What's with the 12pm start though?  Seems an odd time to go for a run, would have preferred even an 11 start.

For those listening to podcasts, just don't do what I did and listen to "My dad wrote a porno", I almost had to stop from laughing and I'm pretty sure I looked like a maniac running & laughing to myself!

I'm finding the mid-week runs a struggle now the weekend runs are so long, think it would take some time to get used to this.  Which made me think of what to do next after the marathon? I'm thinking of dropping down to 10Ks and concentrating on losing weight and getting faster.  Maybe increase to 5 runs a week.
  • MikeSmith, so many people have pimped My Dad Wrote a Porno that I've now downloaded series one and it shall accompany me on my next long run
  • TopSecTopSec ✭✭✭
I tried to get into Home Front but never managed yet, there's years of it if I wanted.  Will look into My Dad wrote a porno ;)

Seem to recall Silverstone has always been a late start.  I remember doing it one year and it was 4 seasons in one race, the hailstones getting blown across the racetrack were rather painful I remember!!

Your mid week runs will be harder Mike, your legs are tired from long runs.  You need to be very careful at this stage that you don't do too much, but do enough to prepare for London.  You will know your body best but I've known a number of people who have followed a plan fairly religiously and then burnt themselves out or got an overuse injury near to the marathon.  You should be fine, but if you need to miss a run or two, go ahead and do it, it won't do any harm.

Going to go short this weekend and do about 15, be a nice drop back :)
  • MikeSmithMikeSmith ✭✭✭
Hope we don't get hailstones!  Expecting a bit of rain though I think.

I have missed a couple of runs and reduced the distance of others, but I'm doing all the long runs and most of the rest.  I think London will be a case of just finishing, I can worry about times another time but not my first and probably only London Marathon.
