I'm in pen G (grrr!) but I emailed them and the person replying said it was OK for me to start with the 4:30 pacer, wherever s/he was. Anyway, aim is sub-4:30. My number is 2502.

I didn't run yesterday - still very tired and jetlagged. I tried a gentle 4 miles this morning and it was dreadful - sore tight muscles, stabby knees and no energy. Average pace was a piss-poor 11:02. Hopefully some more sleep and a couple more gentle runs will get things back to normal.

The forecast for the day is now on the BBC, it is saying no rain and 12mph winds which isn't too bad. Lots of rain forecast in the days building up to the race though so I wouldn't be surprised if it does rain on the day.
  • OuchOuchOuchOuch ✭✭✭
Taper madness - Just booked to run another one, Valencia in November.
Would be very happy with a few spots of cooling rain in 9 days time.
Day 2 of ibruprofen withdrawl...a least I can enjoy caffeine for a few days or so.
  • NickW2NickW2 ✭✭✭
The forecast I look at now says a fair bit of rain on the day. Also, I'm pretty sure it always rains in Manchester so that's what I've mentally prepared myself for.
  • Orignally aiming for sub 3:15, but now 3:15-3:30 and enjoy !!!

  • Cal - get some rest and you will be fine (although maranoia probably won't go away  :D )

Ouch - I would love to do Valencia. Beautiful city.

Did club session last night. Had planned to do parkrun tomorrow but going to be sensible and marshal. 6 miles some time Sat or Sun, 4 on Tues and 2 on Thurs. Yikes!!

  • NE - do you run with Spirit of Monmouth RC? I agree about the numbers and regions - a couple of club mates have similar numbers.
  • NickW2NickW2 ✭✭✭
3 of my club-mates are also running and have similar numbers too (all within 100 of each other), so there might be something in that.

Enjoy your last long run this weekend everyone, don't go too far! Not sure what I will do this weekend yet, thinking 11 miles with a target-marathon-paced parkrun in the middle and the rest easy, but not sure if it will work time-wise. Will do something around 10 miles though and mostly easy.

  • I had originally been aiming for 3:40-3:42 to try and secure a BQ but abandoned that hope now and A goal is now 3:44:59. B goal would be a PB (<3:54) and C goal is a sub-4. Of course, the D goal (as in any marathon) has to be to 'finish'!

Went for my first run in 12 days today as I've had no pain for the last 3 days and it felt really good,no aches where it was sore and no effort at all,yet it came out at 4hr pace.
Now thinking it's back to looking good for next week.Gone with 3:50 as target, amazing day would be sub 3:45,c goal would be under 3:59:14(PB)

Has anyone read anything about the result service? i.e. do we get a text with an offical time on when we finish? Cannot find anything about it in the booklet
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Bob-Last year we got a text after we finished if you gave them your number, there's also a tracking service so if you enter your details you see your splits quickly.

Question for those who have run half and full marathons in the past. I'm a relative marathon novice myself but have run many halves. How do your times match up? My last three halves have been 1:23.36, 1:22.17 and 1:22.22 (last weekend). I want to know if sub-3 is a realistic goal. Training programme has been 18 weeks uninterrupted P&D up to 55 with some extra miles thrown in. Best indicators in training were an 18.5 miler at 6:43 pace which felt relatively comfortable and a 22.5 miler at 7:02 pace where I increased pace to 6:30 for last couple of miles.

  • Hi All - been going to bed early(ish) this week as I've been shattered and ravenously hungry since Sunday - hence absence from here for a while! Felt better today so did an interval session this evening and had done another attempt at a MP run on Wednesday lunchtime - came in a bit fast again: 8:36/mi. for 5.26 miles.

Glad you had a good holiday Cal!

Good news on the progress with your leg Ian. It would be really great to bump into you in pen E as it sounds like your goals are pretty much identical to mine. I'm hoping for sub-3:50... so 3:49:59, with sub-4:00 as a B target and just get round as a C target. I'm a very (very) small woman with a pony tail dressed all in black (long tights, t-shirt) number 10460. If you're also reasonably local to Manchester then it seems like the regional number allocation is probably correct since your number is so close to mine as well.

DL34 - I think you should be close to sub-3:00 with those times. One of my work colleagues is aiming for a sub-3:00 marathon some time in the near future... his minimum prerequisite for a HM time was sub-1:26 and he ran 1:23:21 recently so he's on for a sub-3:00.

Si - Arrow Cars are usually pretty good... they're who we use for work customers.

So... are we going to have a thread meet up beforehand??? It would be great to get to meet a few more forumites in RL? Maybe somewhere near the cricket ground or else closer to the start area if folks aren't using the bag drop?

Nell-Are you only allowed to use Internet of a night time where you are ;-)
Good idea about a meet-up before hand if it can be arranged, best places I can think of are on town hall steps, they let us use the toilets last year and by the cricket ground. The start area was very busy and you got sent in different directions for pens.
  • OuchOuchOuchOuch ✭✭✭
DL34 - Some fast and improving HM times. There are a number of tried and tested formulas which suggest 2 X HM time plus 10-15 minutes depending on your level of endurance training, so looks like your bang-on.  My most recent HM was 3 weeks ago and 82.10 and I am aiming for 2.54...but I have run lots of marathons but am also 52!  Pacing will be key for you, look at the splits on last years sub 3 finishers to give you an idea of pacing.  I am aiming for 1.24.30 at HW as I am always 4-6 minutes slower in the second half.
A meet-up, close to the toilets, ideal.
Lovely day today, so a few miles on the beach and then 10 tomorrow, 5 @ MP.

No parkrun for me today (given that I pulled out of my club team relay, parkrun didn't seem like a great plan either) but I did go out for an early morning plod to try and get the blood back into my legs. Glorious weather even at 6am (although I didn't go out until just before 7, having spent some time grinding a hockey ball into my butt).
Same 4 mile route as yesterday but it was a lot better. Legs still feel heavy but after a slow warm-up mile (10:56), things improved with the rest round about MP.
I'll attempt a longer run tomorrow.

8 days to go - it's all getting quite exciting. Finding it hard not to run too fast during my taper (parkrun pb this morning including my 1,000th mile of training for Manchester - been on p&d 55-70), but have promised myself nothing quicker than 8:30s this week (with 2 at mp on Tuesday).
Hope everyone rests well, avoids diseases and fills their plates with carbs over then coming week!

  • 7 miles in the sun this afternoon. So glad races are in the morning. Helped at parkrun this morning as I couldn't trust myself to just jog round  :)

Is it too early to start packing?!
  • DL34DL34 ✭✭
Thanks OuchOuch. Good advice. I will be going out a little slower than you. The aim is a small positive split so around 1.28 for first half would be the aim. I'm not giving myself a big margin for error so let's see how it goes. There's more than a good chance I'll be hanging around the toilet area beforehand. Will be racing in green Windle Valley Runners vest.
  • What a beautiful day it's been... just over 5 miles fasted today (and a bit too fast, again!). Planning about 11 or 12 miles slow tomorrow - then some intervals on Tuesday or Wednesday and just a couple of miles on next Saturday. It's fair to say I'm crapping myself now... and second guessing all my decisions... pace, which tights to wear, what time to set off in the morning... but I have filled in all the details on the back of my number, so that's something at least!

What time do we all want to hang around the toilets?
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Nell-There's an offer a man doesn't get every day  :) Got to get the coach over I think as don't fancy driving after the race,so think I'm due at the cricket ground around 8ish.
Good thing about the injury is I haven't had time to worry.
  • Ian - I've just done a genuine LOL!!!

Yeah - I was thinking some time around 08:00 - 08:15. I'm hoping to be parked by 07:45 in one of the Man U car parks and then walk over to drop my bag. Precise time at the toilets will depend on the queue at the bag drop

Should we all be holding a red rose in our teeth and carrying a copy of Das Kapital... or something!?
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Nell-Think we'll go with the something else, people might talk if I turn up to a race with a rose.
  • Cal JonesCal Jones ✭✭✭
I didn't know cottaging was on the menu? :D
I've filled in my details too. I might get around to pinning it on my vest later on today. (I will likely wear a long-sleeved top under my vest, though, like last year, if you good people are hoping to recognise me).

7 miles today. Thought about doing 10 but I still feel quite tired so I didn't really want to add to that. Also, I nearly fell over during the fourth mile when I caught my toe on a rock. I managed (god knows how - I was almost horizontal) to stay on my feet but the effort knocked the stuffing out of me a bit. My knee also had a grumble a bit earlier but I told it to shut up and it did. I'm hoping that also works during the marathon.

Talking of tripping over things, if anyone is new to Manchester, there are out and back sections where they divide the road with cones. So don't fall over 'em, mkay? Saw that happen last year. Fortunately it wasn't me.

Lovely 8 miles today, sunny but cool and no wind , hope it's like this next week. So it's looking like 8:15 outside the toilets near the town hall. Like Little Nell I've also gotta drop bag off, hope there's not long ques there.  3 more shortish runs planned for the week, just gotta decide whether to do a short run on the Saturday , will see how the weeks pans out.
