Hi all. Going long first time. Seen you guys at eg. Mcr marathon so already value your indiscriminate support. I am, erm..not your classic triaflete and as far as outlaw is concerned I have sort of a plan..ain't going to podium (although I might come twenty-first of the 17 stone second-year triathlete forty-plus eejits category) ...my question is...re nutrition..how many gels to take for the run....I'm looking at a 4.5-6 hour "ralk" but my scaled up nutrition estimates from half IM mean I need to take a back pack!! Any ideas? Esp based on previous outlaws, where knowledge of on course buffet is really helpful?!
There's food stations every mile and a half on the run, with water, High 5, crisps, gels and (most importantly) Jaffa Cakes. I carried nothing at all on the run, and did it mostly on Jaffa Cakes, as after the bike I was getting a little tired of gels. Good luck - see you at the end of July!
I've had varying success with gels on the run. I think it depends entirely on how well you've managed your nutrition on the bike. At Wales I ended up feeling rubbish on gels and dumped them when I found pretzels on the feed station. At Mallorca, I ended up finding these RitterSport chocolate wafer thingies which were amazing, but I still kept a couple of gels on me which were used as needed. Like Paperman says, I think you could probably rely on feedstations, but if you're used to gels, take a couple with you in case (I just run/shuffle with one in each hand).
Ah ok thanks. I've done a half where the gels were non-existent and I was glad to be carrying about 10 (!) with me. I get on with them fine, shotgun them 2 at a time every half hour but for a full I was fearing where I'd have to stick them...Good to know outlaw can be relied upon to help out. Too early for race day briefing and site fairly unhelpful. I'll still take about 10 on the run (once a scout...) no doubt but I have a race belt with a pouch that will fit that many so just glad I'm not having to resort to drastic tactics. Was envisaging creating a bullet-belt style sash out of 3 normal race belts with loops...to look like a fat Han Solo triathlete.....could get 18 in one that way and despite (obviously) thinking it's the best idea ever -for the style- in reality i reckon it'd chafe like hell and be swung into the river Trent inside a mile or two....cheers, see you in 4 weeks!
Memphis .. 2 every half hour is far too many, that'll land you in all sorts of portaloos on the run course, for a r/walk of 5.30/6.00 then you'll find all you can eat or need on the course
