Big G - I think you've got a fully stocked sweetshop stashed in your house :)

That always confuses me Barcelona marathon called the Zurich marathon, sponsors I guess.

    right signing off now, honest

Just popping on to wish all the racers the best of luck tomorrow (or in fact today having just looked at the clock  :o )
  • Thanks everyone for wishing good luck and all the best from me to anyone racing today. Just arrived at Exander Stadium. Can't wait to start running .......
  • Shades, no real change. Thanks for asking. Went for a walk this morning in the hope that it would be walking with a few short running intervals, but my body said no. Oddly I can skip (schoolgirl style, not with a rope) without any hip pain and I can run backwards. I just can't run forwards like a normal person. Back is hurting a lot too. It can feel OK when I leave the house but once I start walking it starts hurting. Standing around is worse so I didn't have much fun volunteering at parkrun yesterday. Needless to say I am very frustrated at this point.
Anyway, enough moaning. Good luck to everyone racing today.

Just found a link for the Birmingham race so having a look at that,Steve started an hour before  the others and has done 30k already and looking good.Jelly and John doing well for the first 10k
  • LoueyLouey ✭✭✭
Can you post it Ian - I had a look and couldn't find a tracker

  • LoueyLouey ✭✭✭
Cal - I'm so sorry you are still struggling. Do you think you ought to see a physio/specialist?
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Louey-Let me know if that works
  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
All 3 at Birmingham are safely finished, well done guys.

Well done Jelly.  Fingers crossed for Taunton then!

A quick update from me.  I did Burton Bradstock Marathon this morning, and had a good chat with Shades at the start, where she leant me Steve Edwards' book.  We commented that it was a bit more "rustic" then Munich, as it basically started in a farm, and was held on quiet country roads in Dorset.

There was a 5K, 10K, Half and Marathon (this was two loops of the Half route), and everyone started together - the start was delayed by about 10mins or so, presumably as there quite big queues for the loos.  I think there were about 40 in the marathon.  I was on the start line and really didn't know what to do regarding pace, so just took it easy and ended up running with a load of 2hr-ish Half Marathon runners - I went through half in about 2:00:30-ish.  I was fine with that, as the course was undulating - 1300ft elevation compared to Munich's aprox. 400ft.  Even so, I wanted to see if could scrape another sub-4 so picked it up a bit, but purposefully walked two of the hills.  I overtook about 6 people of the small field in the second half, and no one overtook me, which was nice again, and finished in 3:54:27 (on my watch), for a second negative split in as many weeks.  It was a bit of a pain going past the finish point at 23-miles, but I just told myself to dig in and that "it's only a parkrun to go".

I have to say that on the rare mile in the second half I was on/under PB-pace I did struggle to maintain that pace so eased off, so I'm not sure what to do about Abingdon now.  Even so, I am happy enough with my time and I felt pretty good all the way around.  I did get a bit light headed at one point, but it did pass.  It was a nice course, friendly organisation, and I'd do it again.  :)

Cal - ha ha at the backwards running and schoolgirl skipping, but seriously not fun if it's sore when you're standing around.  I hope it starts to improve soon.

Jelly - well done, that's a significant PB, you'll get that sub 4 in the not very distant future.

Big G - great time for you over that course, not sure how the RO can describe it as flat and fast, but probably flat for Dorset.  I can see that it could be a fairly fast course as the downhill stretches were very gentle and quite long, but I'd describe it as undulating.

I had a difficult run, I knew I'd lost a lot of fitness over niggles and the cut heel, but at 6 miles I got a pain in my hip which then gave me a bit of groin pain and quite a lot of intermittent pain in my quad.  Very similar to my groin injury earlier in the year.   I took some painkillers and it eased a bit only to come back with a vengeance at 10 miles, hurt a lot more on the uphills.  The course is a 10 mile loop, then a 3 mile loop and then repeat both loops for the marathon.  As I was coming to the 13 mile point I decided to pull out at halfway but when I got to start of the 2nd lap I didn't turn for the finish but carried on to do the 2nd lap.  I thought doing another 13 miles would make no difference to my hip so just get on with it.  I was a fair bit slower in the 2nd half but I loved the course, quiet rural roads, pretty villages and at the 20ish mile just as I'd run through what seems like a derelict farm there was suddenly a huge red deer stag about 30 yards from me.   We stared at each other for a couple of seconds then it turned and bounced away with his huge white rear.  It really made my day, I went all the way to Scotland and didn't see a red deer.   Anyway I went on to finish in 5:15 which was better than I'd hoped with my hip/quad.   Loved the event, really friendly, low key and gorgeous views of the Dorset countryside.

Jelly-Well done on the PB,as shades says that sub 4 will be gone soon enough.
Big G-Great racing with another sub 4 and negative split, with the amount of racing you've done that's no mean feat.
Shades-Very well done on finishing after comsideimg dropping out,and a decent time in the circumstances.

Going to give my ankle a few days then may have a trip to docs to see what he thinks,Dr Google tells me it's either a fractured metatarsal or tendon problem so I'm keeping on top of anti-inflammatory and soaking it in Epsom salts and hoping it eases.
  • Well done Jelly! That's a good time.
Shades, sorry you had a painful run - I hope this isn't going to be a longterm problem. Nice to see the deer though. Have to be careful with stags, mind you. A woman got gored in Richmond Park recently.

Ian - sorry to hear the foot is so sore, can your GP refer you to the physio without seeing the GP first, trust me GP's don't do sports injuries.   I doubt its a fractured metatarsal, I have a friend that's just done that and it would be swollen with bruising and you wouldn't be able to walk properly.  Most likely to be a tendon.

Cal - the stag was in a field and a big fence between us.  I know though that deer in parks often get stressed with humans and see them as a threat, especially if they have a dog with them.

Well at least I can still run with this injury.  When I arrived at the race I had a sharp pain in my quad when I got out of the car, so must have tweaked something.  It's on the same side as my cut heel and I wonder if when I ran Loch Ness I was trying to protect my heel and therefore not running in a normal comfortable way so may have put extra stress on that side of my body.   I expect Dublin in 2 weeks will be a run/walk as unlikely to heal fully in that time.

Well done to John and Steve, have checked the results, looking forward to the race reports :)

Off to raid the fridge now :)

  • Ian5Ian5 ✭✭✭
Shades-There's no bruising which is a bonus then. With my new job I get free health care, but I haven't had my pack through yet which is typical as it's private I could probably get seen by a physio quite quickly.Might chase them up on it tomorrow.
  • Well done on some great marathons Shadies! Big G - you are getting seriously good at these negative splits, really impressive and controlled racing. Jelly - congrats on the PB and I'm sure sub-4 will come easily next time. Shades - sorry you had a tough race, you obviously know when it is safe to push on and finish. I hope you are OK for Dublin.

Cal - I'd agree with Louey re going to a Physio. I really feel your frustration and I know from experience that it's more annoying and depressing when you don't have a clear diagnosis as it's unclear how to rehab.

I found the Cabbage Patch 10 really tough today. Didn't start well as couldn't find my bib and chip yesterday, but luckily the race organiser agreed to provide a replacement! My GPS seemed to be all over the place so I often thought I was going slower than I was. Plus I felt every speed bump, twist and turn in the course more than ever. I was overtaken by a lady who I felt sure was in my AG so I focused on trying to get under 65 mins or at least a PB. Failed with the 1st goal as finished in 65:06, but was at least a PB. But turns out the lady was in her 30s so I got the AG prize - 75 quid, a crate of beer and a cabbage! 6th lady overall and beat Mara again! But didn't eat until I got home at nearly 3pm so feel a bit rough now.
  • Well done, SK, that's a fab time and yay for free cabbage! Yeah, I didn't like that road where the pavement is all humpy from the tree roots, and that nasty steep slope coming off the river. Oof!

I'm seeing my osteo/masseur but as I had to have two appointments the week before Royal Parks, I can't afford another until the 25th. But if he can't fix it I'll see Toby, the physio.
  • Hi I will post my race report tomorrow as I am off to bed now. Never felt so tired lol. Glad I booked tomorrow off work
  • Cut off post grrrr. Was just going to say well done Jelly fantastic time.
  • I'll just say the race was much tougher than I anticipated and turned into a bit of a slog. Just so glad to have completed my first Marathon but I think I overdosed on Percy Pigs during the race
  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Ian - that's great news that you'll have private medical care in your new job, having prompt access to a physio is just what us runners need.   Just not being on a NHS waiting list for any treatment can make the difference between a long lay off from running, there's some runners on RW waiting 9-12+ months for surgery to repair injuries that are stopping them running, some end up paying and going private as the not running is driving them crazy.
It's possible it could be a stress fracture, but I think you'd be in more pain, if a SF you should be able to run your fingers along the bone and pinpoint a very sore point as none of us have a lot of muscle or fat on those bones.

SK - congratulations, cash, beer and a cabbage :) and a PB.  What a tough run you had too, not being able to settle into a rhythm plus GPS problems and not being able to find your race number.   Mara must be used to you beating her now ;)

John - Marathons aren't easy and usually there's a part of the race for all of us where we have to dig deep.   Enjoy your day off work today, please try and get out for a little walk/jog it will speed up your recovery.  Nice warm bath will help too.

Well sort of good news that it is not a reoccurrence of my groin injury.   I'm sure what I have is a hip flexor strain, explains the random pain in my quad when I got out of the car.   The flexor has tightened overnight and I can't lift my knee comfortably to any height and I can feel the tightness in the flexor muscle.   But I don't want a delayed recovery from my race so I've been out and done a gentle and slow 3+ miles which has really helped loosen the muscle, walked the last half mile as that's a slight uphill.   Had to cancel my Yogalates though and probably Pilates tomorrow too.

  • Cal - I hope your osteo/masseur can give you an idea re rehab solutions. I guess masseurs see all kinds of injuries so should have a good idea what the problem is with a bit of prodding.

Shades - good that the hip loosened a bit with the recovery run. Do you think it needs a couple of days complete rest now, or does that not help because it just stiffens?

John - well done again on the marathon. Hope you are feeling ok today.

Legs go not too bad today, just feel a bit knackered still. Supposed to have fitness tonight but will see how I feel.

  • Big_GBig_G ✭✭✭
Shades, sorry to hear you've picked up an injury, but well done for finishing yesterday under those circumstances.  I was looking on Strava and there's a feature where you can do "fly-bys" (i.e., you can see other people's run on a map of the route).  One chap only did 23-miles, but has still called it Burton Bradstock Marathon on his Strava.  Tut tut.  I was wondering how they were going to check for that - if they'd asked me to go around the last 3 miles again (after completing 26.2) I think I'd have had a bit of a whinge ;)

SK, well done on the great PB and prizes!

John, congrats on your marathon.  Sounds like you had a tough race, but you got it done so well done.

As for me, I'm feeling okay and will be doing a short recovery run in a while.  I ordered another pair of those Asics I was given by RW as I like them so much, and they should be turning up today.

My iPhone is playing up - it's not holding its charge, and also the charging socket seems dodgy as often it doesn't charge at all (it's not the charging  cable as the cable works fine in another phone).  It looks like I may need a trip to Exeter to get them to look at it.

Birmingham had a few surprises for me, one it's not pan flat as someone had described it, I coped mentally better with double loop than I expected, was more emotional than London and I wasn't upset I didn't get my target time and really chuffed with PB. I knew I couldn't of done anymore and was pleased with pace until my legs stopped wanted to play ball, but I dig deep and kept running.  mentally I was strong and was definitely physically slowness, with Shades plan I can build on this and this was in my mind when things were tough.  In my head before I got back into the city where my family and school mates were I was thinking look happy so they can't see the pain and don't worry, saw family and instantly burst into tears and cried the last 400 meters and beyond, skippy from the Trotters has been a huge support to me and messaged me through the race I didn't look at messages until the end, they made me cry again. I'm not a overly emotional person. Lack of crowd support first part worried me a little, but once on Half Marathon course it soon built up and was really encouraging. I was also worried about meeting the back of the pack on second loop but it was fine they were spread out, I did have to watch pace when 3:45 past me as I felt I was speeding up, heard the 4 hour pacer behind me he was really good encouraging all the runners I stayed in front for a while but  they past me and I was right they started behind me and I'm still ahead and I can get a PB.  not sure if I would be doing Birmingham again and if I did it would be more to do with family and friend than course wasn't that well marshalled, was good music points and plenty of water. I finished before half started but a friend who was a 5+ said it was scary when leader of Half passed her, they had bikes and motor bikes, we wasn't warned at start and headphones were allowed so was chance not hear instructions they were shouting.  Sure I've missed loads.  Well done to everyone who raced this weekend.

SK - I'll just assess the injury day by day as to whether I run or not, my muscles are all slightly tired post marathon so I'll just see how it is in the morning, at least I won't get DOMS now having done a recovery run.

You're maybe just a bit tired and not eating until a long time after your race slows recovery a bit.

Big G - I think I saw on FB one guy went the wrong way and ended up doing extra but he's still singing the praises of the race.   I'm not sure how he went wrong, I've never seen such great waymarking of a race.   Maybe you should report that guy that did the short distance to the RO, see if his Strava time agrees to the results first in case his watch packed up.

Best get out for that run soon, I'm glad I went out early for my run, the sky is really dark and the most peculiar colour, not sure if we're going to get the edge of the storm that's due to hit my beloved Cork today.

That's annoying about your phone, even more annoying that you have to go to Exeter to get it sorted.

Jelly - well done again.   Maybe a few teething problems with the race that they'll sort out for next year, you'd better get used to lack of crowd support as you'll be lucky to see anybody at DMV.   Good that the 2 laps  didn't bother you as a lot of marathons are 2 laps due to traffic and policing of the event.

    How are your legs today?

  • SHADESSHADES ✭✭✭✭
Just looking at Birmingham race reports and results.   Interesting that allegedly 9,000 runners in the marathon, but there were actually 5,200 finishers.  I'd wondered where they thought they'd get 10,000 marathon runners from!

Jelly - well done on the PB that's a great time. I'm sure you can get sub 4 next time but don't get hung up on it - you should be proud of your time this weekend.

Big G - great running, thinking back to the spring when you were struggling to break 4 hours, and now you can run sub 4 feeling comfortable :) re the iphone issue - sounds like a similar issue I had with mine once. I took it into an apple store and the guy had a little dig about in the charging socket with a paperclip and got a load of fluff out. He said it happens a lot with guys who keep their phone in their pocket (girls more often keep it in a handbag). I've done it myself a couple of times since (not being too vigorous so as not to scratch anything). Anyway, if that's your problem I thought it might save you a trip.

Shades - well toughed out. The running part doesn't sound too enjoyable but at least it was a nice race.

Ian - doesn't sound too promising about your ankle :( look after yourself.

Cal - sorry to hear your issues aren't improving. Hoping that they do soon.

SK - well done that's really speedy! And a great bonus to win your AG and get a nice prize! You should have eaten the cabbage if you got hungry haha

John - congrats on becoming a marathoner!

I ok without crowd support just was expected as big city, didn't have good night woke up about 2 and couldn't get comfy with my legs hurting so got up and done some stretches and  paracetamol and did find little easier, not too bad this morning, might be different after 5 hours on coach. Talking of DMV what would be best to do over these next two weeks.

Wouldn't have that many DNS or DNF  think once get more established will be a good one, hopefully will act on feed back.
