And you Jools, that' a good couple of days.

SJ - Hopefully 4 more 20s, last week was a build up week, 4 weeks to go. I must have done around 6 20s before I had to stop too. I certainly need a few more, or I'll be miles behind LMH.
  • That was a good weekend Joolska.

I managed ten ok yesterday TR but my knee has been quite niggly overnight. I was hoping to go longer today but will have to play it by ear. I need to get back to it if it's going to be worth giving Yeovil a go but better to be able to do something than nothing, it's a case of guessing where the line is and trying not to go over it.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Looks like we've emerged from London in reasonable shape with Dan's rags to riches performance.
    LMH/ TR/ Crab
    - Fingers crossed for a good run-up to Yeovil and a less eventful last few miles; had a chuckle at the pacing joke.
    Wardi - It most surely does.  PO10 shows in 2017 153 V50 went sub3, 42 (inc CD/myself) went sub250, by V55  38&3 by V60 6&1! Can't bloody wait.
Enjoying some pressure and speed-free training, 53m last week hopefully a few more this with MdMB race now 2 months away.

LMH - agreed don't push it too hard on my behalf, esp given my track record for making start lines. But 10m is indeed a step in the right direction.

    7m yday and 16m today.

    Evening.

CRAB - cheers. I actually started with Pilates a couple of weeks ago - signed up for a beginners class at the local Pilates studio (which I thought might be more useful than a generic class at the gym). It's been steady progress thus far, partly because it's a beginners class, but mostly cos we're northern and thus quite simple. I'll bring a litre of gold top (in a glass bottle) down to the Red Lion for you, and some Tetley tea bags.

Dan -  cracking parkrun!! I did wonder about your pace pockets too. Do you have a special one you wear for London? First half at 6'15 pace, then gradually slowing down to 8'00s before doing the last 5k in 50 minutes? A rapid run on Saturday though - well done chap!

CD - good advice for wardi, although he's quite used to people pointing and laughing at him. Enjoy your hols wardi!

TR - a few solid days there. Good man. The whole of Wiltshire is behind you.

joolska - an excellent weekend there. For info I think the Lancaster Half covers much of the same course as the Trimpell 20, so it's very flat except for the last half mile. I reckon that will cost you circa 30 seconds (or at least it did me at Trimpell last year). Prizes are a bit random there too. I think the bloke used to work at Rumbelows though - the prizes are all random electrical items from the 1980s. So expect to win a Soda Stream or a Remington Fuzzaway if you do well.

ES - still no accurate diagnosis, no. I think the radiographer was Ray Charles. I got referred to orthopaedics with a hip issue. But the specialist instantly said it's definitely not that, plus it was my right hip (where all my issues are on the left), so that was worthwhile. I've gone right back to basics now, and am working through a series of things with the physio and making some progress (I think), so I'll keep at it.

Charlie - Spain sounds nice! Enjoy!

Nice to see SJ posting again. I had a load of Sale Harriers in the shop a few weeks back. Are you still with them or are you unattached now?

LMH - fingers crossed things are ok and you make Yeovil.

Apologies if I've missed anyone else. Hard to remember it all! Not much happening here. Just more gym stuff and rehab. My hammy has improved enough so I can get back on the eliptical/x-trainer thing, so I've been mostly doing that. Still a long way off a running return, but I live in hope!
  • If you can't live in hope there's not much point LS21 - I'm glad to hear that there's some progress.

I managed to push things a little further with 14 yesterday, wanted to do more and it was a lovely morning for it but after about 8 I started to feel the glute and hamstring which gradually became more pronounced and slowed me down so I showed some sense and came home. In an even more sensible (and therefore unusual) move I think I'm going to confine myself to the pool this morning and not run. What with tapering and all it feels like weeks since I was running properly but slowly, slowly and all that. If I can get back to a long run or two over the weekend I'll feel better about things.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

LS21 - haha - maybe a new line to be called Not the pace pocket with motivatory phrases such as 'water is for wimps', 'its only the first mile that counts'.
Just realised my key training stat for the next few months is not pace but amount of ascent and descent. So finding some local routes, the best so far an 8 mile loop with 1,600 ft of both.

Nice to see Jools back in proper action and hope your re-start continues LMH.

BTW LMH.. a glimpse of the future perhaps?  I noticed that a former training partner of mine topped the LV60 rankings for a half marathon in 2017 (90.50 or thereabouts).  She lives about 4m down the road from me in Bramham so I must offer my congratulations when I next see her.

OO.. good luck with the mountain training.

LS21.. I'll join you & Crab for afternoon tea if that's alright.  The Tunnocks marshmallows are on me.

Lovely out here in Sorrento, about 27 today.  Aborted a bus trip this morning when due to traffic and Italian driving it covered all of 2k in an hour.  Uncomfortably warm on an overcrowded bus with no sign of exceeding walking pace, so me & Mrs Wardi got off and walked back.
Apart from that all is well in the land of Peroni and pizza.   :p

LMH - 14 is further improvement.

10 for me this morning, copped a drenching too.

TR.. meant to mention really chuffed to see you able to run double digit efforts after being crocked pre-VLM.  Shame about the wetting.

I can't believe it's May and I'm still in marathon training.
  • Sounds as though you're enjoying your break Wardi. I fared better in the marathon rankings than the half and would like to top them again when I'm a LV60 but who knows? Good running from your club mate.

It was foul here yesterday morning TR but my strategic swim has left me with a much better morning to attempt a longer run today which amongst other things means that it's not such a pain if I need to walk back.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

Ha! I did a strategic gym session yesterday in the pouring rain, LMH. Have to be some benefits to only running 4 days a week at the moment!
  • PadamsPadams ✭✭✭

Good to hear the bench seems to be clearing! And the weather is improving for the bank holiday weekend.

Not much here but did manage to make it to most of the track session on Tuesday evening - missed the start but did 3x1500 with each 500 increasing pace. Quite enjoyed that and felt reasonably good although I could feel a couple of sore spots (right quad and left calf) so the marathon is still in the legs a bit.

Haha, I've won the Golden ball 20mile race there and won a toaster both times. :-D

ML. . One of TR's favourite phrases is 'I hope nothing dumps in my toaster before marathon day'.  At least you seem to be very well prepared for such a mishap  :)

LMH - Yes, a drenching yday and today there was a frost again. Hopefully that' the end of the bad weather now. Time to get some warm weather training in.

Wardi - fortune did indeed dump in my toaster, I needed a spare like ML84.

    Just 7m today.
  • Knee is grumpy this morning so I shall listen and hope that it settles for tomorrow.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

LMH - Have you considered using this stuff: Flexiseq gel.
I use it regularly to reduce pain/ pain-avoidance, believe it has helped me significantly and the research reviews are positive.
  • I haven't used that OuchOUch but I do have some 'magic cream' that I bought in the USA two years ago (and topped up with last year as it is so good). The problem is the kneecap and loose bits floating around in the joint though so unfortunately there isn't really much to be done about it.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
  • So my extensive knowledge and experience (over a year - that's virtually Jedi level that is) of Pilates.  Basically I'm archetypal neanderthal man.  If it needs picking up get the fck on with it...bllx to them straight back posters.  That's for wimps.  Warming up is what I do with me porridge and cooling down is what I do with a beer at the Red Lion in London Village.  Stretching is what you do to Tergats to give you the best chance of 'doing a Dan' along the Embankment.   I think I might be Northern.

When we swerved surgery nearly two years ago the advice was to start doing some preventative work to best avoid a relapse of t'prolapse.  Osteo gave me the pep talk about it not being for me mentholly but to go along and stick at it cos it's really what is needed and it is something he did from a similar starting point.  He hand picked the lucky lady for the job.

First up and a one to one.  Feeling a little self-conscious I rock up to be confronted by a Merican ex-ballerina and her Rusky student.  Couldn't get Two Tribes out me head and spent the first five minutes looking for the wrestling ring and Kent Walton.  Was glad I had my best Mick McManus scads on.  I'd nailed the costume side of it.  I could tell they were both impressed.  Then something amazing happened - and it didn't involve an old lady in a mac and pointed glasses shaking her brolly at  Leon Arras, The Man From Paris.  Simple task.  Lay on your back, knees bent and lift one leg up...then t'other.  £50 for this shite!!  You're having a giraffe. Right now put your hand on your butt and do it again.  Left leg goes up and arsecheek does fck all.  Right leg goes up and the corresponding bumcake is more solid than a Taffy John bar billiards ball.  Rock solid one and custard on the other.  Me noggins asking me pins to do the same, getting the same result and yet must be a completely different sequence of events to carry it out.  Leslie Welch I may not be but I could work out that one of them was wrong.  So that was the Eureka moment where it went from absolute bobbins to the gospel.  I now do a class (with equipment) once a week aimed at people with 'discy backs' and there's never more than 4 of us in there.  Used to wipe me out from a menthol point of view.  So much to take in and think about and so hard to get parts of your body to stop doing things you weren't aware they were doing and start doing things you didn't know they were capable of.  Who knew ribs moved?  And I never knew I have seriously over active feet.  Those bastids get involved in any fckn movement I ever carry out - even when it's upper body related.  Sets of a chain of events that nature didn't really intend.

So do I think I'd have had the same outcome if I'd have Tim Donned my leotard, found meself a mat and jumped in with all the mums trying to find their pelvic floor whilst not letting out a little bit of wee?  No, not really.  What I've been fortunate enough to stumble across is a highly specialised Pilates therapist who pretty much works with me individually - albeit in a group setting.  I'm still about as co-ordinated as a baby giraffe who's been on the blue Smarties but I'm sure a lot of my movement is more as it's bio-mechanically intended to be than it was.  I'd even go as far as to say I enjoy it.  Well at least I'm probably not Northern after all then.  Small mercies and all that.

No, I'm a bloke and I go to Pilates.  There.  I've said it.  Fck me I'll be eating quinoa and getting me binlids privately educated next.  Tuscany this Summer anyone.

Oh and I've been doing some decent running this week.  Even chucked in some effort and stuff.  Wetter than a mermaid's minge on Wednesday's medium long run.  Dried out just in time to see the clouds dissipate, temperature shoot up and storm force winds drop.  Happy days.

    As you were.

CRAB - haha, cracking! Love the Leon Arras reference!! This is genuinely true too, but I share my birthday with Brian Glover! He was born 40 years before me, but what an honour! Thanks for the info too. Genuinely very helpful. I think I’ve embarked on a similar(ish) path, albeit in right at the beginning. The class I’m in only has 3 people, and it’s at a specific Pilates studio. That’s all they do there, nothing else. Theyve got some scary looking equipment too - one room looks like the set of a 50 Shades film (not that I watch such filth), so I might get to play on that soon. There’s a class for people with glass backs that I can progress onto after the initial 6 weeks too, so I’m going to stick with it. Going tonight actually, so am wearing my leotard and pink leg warmers as we speak. Magic. Nicely done on the running stuff too.

TR - stick at it. I know you’d planned to have finished running for a bit by now, but it’s not long to keep at it. It’s better than the alternative too! Think of last year - at least you’re out there.

LMH - fingers crossed re the knee. I hope it settles down.

ML84 - ha, good stuff! I’m sure a mate of mine won a Breville sandwich toaster at one of their races last year! And a microwave that was the same size as a Fiat Panda.

Usual here. Rehab and what not. Training every day so getting back to it a bit. And then the aforementioned Pilates ce soir. Making progress, just very slowly.
  • Nice one CRAB, I haven't laughed at a post on here that much for a while! Almost makes me want to get off my arse and find a Pilates class. Almost.

Just a few easy 5-6 milers this week, but I think I might try a parkrun tomorrow as a benchmark of current 5K fitness. I have a couple of 5K race options in July (one definite), and thought I might try one as an actual goal race. 8 weeks to work on 5k-specific stuff...

Ha, love it Crab.  Although being a bit more dull, the core stuff I do is Pilates based (taught by physio).  If I do my 20 minute routine about 4 times a week, I generally stay on the right side of the bench.  A regular failure to keep up with said routine sees the aches and pains returning.  I still have a strong side and a weak side, but there's hopefully less of a difference than there used to be!
  • You weren't paying attention ES - you mustn't find a class you need one to one with a scary instructor and machines reminiscent of transformers!

Training is cheating Crab - how am I going to keep up with you at Yeovil if you're doing that?

Really hope the Pilates helps LS21 - at least you're doing everything you can to help yourself. Knee feels better for the rest day (despite over eight miles of walking) so I fully intend to beat it into submission tomorrow unless it cripples me overnight again of course.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

I thought I was on page 1 for a minute.

LS 21 - I did loads of strengthening work last yr to help fix the stomach/groin thing, still do it a couple of sessions per week. Very true on the alternative, missing London didn' bother me as much as the thought that I might be out for a long spell again.

Today i managed to complete the reps I had to bail on last week, so progress here.

On the road  for matches in Dorset and Surrey tomorrow and Sunday (could end up in Wiltshire though !), so no long run window, good job monday is a bank holiday.

Blimey, the days of my smoking jacket being seen as the wooing garment of choice seem to be numbered.  How will the ladies possibly be able to resist  LS21 swanning around in a Mr Motivator suit?  A little head mounted microphone  with some cheesey 90's disco music and they will surely be like putty in his fingers.

Cheers wardi - yep, I definitely nailed it. Unlike CRAB I think my pelvic floor needs work. I think I might have let out a little dribble of wee when we were doing some sort of thrusting exercise. Fortunately the pair of socks I’d stuffed down the front of my lycra shorts absorbed any leakages. I must remember to wear my Tena lady for next week’s class. Other than that I was naturally magnificent. Ish.

Crab/ LS21 - cracking stuff!  Post 2019 VLM we demand a Red Lion drink induced joint performance, a touch of Swan Lake (LS21 providing the lake) with more than a hint of the Tiswas Dying Fly.
TR - Good time to be back at it.
LMH - Hope the run went well.
ES - You put the idea of a 5K in my head, so first fastish run since my marathon in a leisurely 19.55 in a  mixture of Cornish mist and sunshine. Hope yours went well too.
15m up and down over the coastal path for tomorrow marking my debut trail shoe run.
